Waxwork Records and WaterTower Music are proud to present Malignant Original Motion Picture Score by Joseph Bishara. Malignant is the latest creation from Conjuring universe architect James Wan. The film marks director Wan’s return to his roots with this original horror thriller. In the film, Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
Joseph Bishara is an American composer, music producer, and actor best known for his work scoring films such as Insidious, The Conjuring, Annabelle, and The Prodigy. He is known for his avant-garde style and unique approach to instrumentation and composition that suits horror films particularly well. Bishara disregards horror film score conventions by employing gut-wrenching string dissonance, haunting electronics, and sudden crescendos. Bishara’s Malignant score offers his distinctive style of disquieting strings, pulsing electronics, droning synths, and haunting sound design.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month I have a very interesting treat. Those who remember my interview with Alexandra West about the movie Pyewacket know we both loved it, so this month I’m thrilled to have a chat with the film’s director, Adam MacDonald, who you might also know from his film Backcountry and the third season of Slasher.
For this month’s film, we’re taking a look at MacDonald’s favorite of all time, a South Korean thriller from Hong-jin Na called The Chaser (2008). Now, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical based on the synopsis provided by IMDb: A disgraced ex-policeman who runs a small ring of prostitutes finds himself in a race against time when one of his women goes missing.
From that synopsis I was expecting something overly stylized and action-oriented like Taken,...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where I’m celebrating the Halloween season with one hell of a creepy movie courtesy of Alexandra West. You may know West as one half of the Faculty of Horror podcast, author of Films of the New French Extremity and The 1990s Teen Horror Cycle, and prolific contributor to a list of major horror outlets too long to count. Think of West as that teacher that everyone likes because she doesn’t ham it up with goofy schtick, and she explores complex topics in a way that always seems to make sense.
West chose a perfectly moody, demonic yarn for October in Adam MacDonald’s 2018 horror film Pyewacket. The film follows Leah Reyes (Nicole Muñoz), a teenage girl at odds with her mother (Laurie Holden) following the death of Leah’s father. Leah is brooding and moody, finding comfort in her...

Combining great programming and special guests, in one of the best places to celebrate Halloween, Salem Horror Fest was one of my favorite events of 2018 and I'm very excited for horror fans to experience what they have planned for this year. Their "Fear of Invasion" film series has been announced, featuring classic remakes like The Thing and The Blog, along with modern favorites like The Strangers and Under the Skin.
Details on the full lineup are below and you can learn more at: https://www.salemhorror.com/
"Salem Ma - Salem Horror Fest returns this October with a series of programs and double features that will explore our nation’s fear of invasion.
“They’ve meddled in our elections. They’re storming our borders. We’re in constant fear of some outside force taking over, we often forget our own role in wiping out an entire population of indigenous people.

Fall is a fine time to submerge oneself under an afghan with a good book, and there are many new treats centered on cinema. From a Hollywood super agent’s tell-all to a comprehensive look at the Coen brothers, there’s plenty here to enjoy in between diving into leaf piles and clutching a pumpkin latte. The autumn cliches are now complete, so let’s move on.
The Endings: Photographic Stories of Love, Loss, Heartbreak, and Beginning Again by Caitlin Cronenberg and Jessica Ennis (Chronicle Books)
One of the most thrilling photographers on the planet is Caitlin Cronenberg, the marvelous shooter of Drake’s Views From the Six album cover (the memorable shot featured the Canadian artist perched atop Toronto’s Cn Tower), among other gems. For the next three months, join me for a summer abroad, as I check out foreign films from countries that have made a big splash in the horror community. Of course, in the spirit of this column, I’ll be taking a peek at movies that may not be as well-known as some of the classics from their particular country. Hopefully, we’ll have a chance to find a few surprises together.
June is here and we have just passed the summer solstice, so the days are long and the sun is warm. I would imagine that means you are craving a movie that will leave you curled up in a ball weeping into clenched fists right about now. Well, you’re in luck, because our first stop on this summer tour is France. Now, you may be thinking, Since when is France depressing? It’s the land of smoking in outdoor cafés,...

The festive holiday season has always included a more somber side, and scary tales of child-stealing demons to ghost stories told ‘round the fireplace go back to pre-Christian celebrations. These long-standing traditions have found modern expression in Christmas horror film and television shows, a unique and sometimes controversial subgenre that cheerfully drives a stake of holly through the heart of cherished Christmas customs.
Yuletide Terror: Christmas Horror on Film and Television, the latest book by Canadian micro-publisher Spectacular Optical, offers a definitive, in-depth exploration of the history of these subversive film and television presentations that allow viewers to engage in different ways with the complicated cultural history of the Christmas season.

Love it or hate it, there's no denying that the found footage subgenre has had a major impact on horror cinema.
What began in 1980 as a novel low-budget idea with Cannibal Holocaust morphed into a fad almost 20 years later with The Blair Witch Project. Since then, found footage has gone on to become one of the more popular and polarizing techniques ever utilized in film, as well as in television and literature.
Found footage's growth into the ravenous, divisive monster it has become is actually a rather fascinating topic, one well worth examining. And I can't think of a better place to start than the upcoming lecture titled "Ghosts in the Machine: The Evolution of Found Footage Horror" by Toronto-based film journalist (and Planet Fury contributor) Alexandra West.
At 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, at the Somerville Theatre (55 Davis Square, Somerville, Ma, 02144), Ms. West will take curious horror fans on...
