In the first season, political newcomer Alex Irving (Deborah Mailman) engineered a coup against Rachel Anderson (Rachel Griffiths), the Prime Minister who appointed her to the Senate.
In season two, both Alex and Rachel find themselves treading different political paths. After being dumped by her own party, Rachel relies on strategist Nick Pearce (Alex Dimitriades) to guide her political ambitions, while Alex finds herself surrounded by a new team, led by her brother Charlie (Rob Collins). But politics can be a nasty business. Will Alex’s determination and the tenacity of her grass-roots driven team be enough? Can she survive a system determined to shake everything she values? And can these political adversaries become political allies?

With a record number of 10,397 submissions, the 2020 Sundance Film Festival short film programmers undertook a herculean task to narrow the official selections down to 74 narrative, animated, and documentary shorts. After previewing 45 official selections made available for advance press screening, IndieWire culled 10 of the most artistically compelling, dramatically surprising, and emotionally resonate pieces. The filmmakers were then emailed and asked to share their inspiration and what they are working on next.
Although no theme unifies this year’s “must see” shorts, there are some trends to note. Perhaps because the list favors the U.S. narrative shorts, the many unique neighborhoods of Los Angeles play an outsized role in many storylines. Sundance alumni return with a vengeance, with last year’s “must-see” short filmmakers Terence Nance and Matthew Puccini and 2014 jury prize winner Bernardo Britto debuting superior new work. And the five-minute-or-less “short shorts” were more satisfying to consume than the...

Charmaine Bingwa.
Born in Western Australia to Zimbabwean parents, Charmaine Bingwa is the first openly gay and woman of colour to win the $US30,000 Heath Ledger Scholarship presented by Australians in Film.
“I’m stunned; this is an incredible platform,” Bingwa told If after accepting the award from Heath Ledger’s father Kim Ledger today at a dinner attended by eight of the 10 finalists at the Chateau Marmon in Los Angeles.
In her acceptance speech she told how Heath touched her life when she saw Brokeback Mountain. His character’s lines about ‘the pain of a life not lived’ inspired her to come out as a gay woman, she said.
“I heard the other day someone say that the most powerful currency you have is the impact you have on other people and I think Heath epitomises that. Heath personally taught me what the power of a performance can do,...

Aaron Glenane in ‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
Aaron Glenane is honoured to be among the 10 finalists for this year’s Heath Ledger Scholarship, which will be announced by Australians in Film (AiF) on Friday local time.
“It’s very moving to have the support of AiF and the industry behind you,” the actor tells If from the Toronto set of his current production. “That says, ‘You’re doing all right, keep going.’”
The fellow finalists for the $US30,000 Scholarship are Harvey Zielinski, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Ezekiel Simat, Gemma Bird Matheson, Kipan Rothbury, Brenna Harding, Bethany Whitmore, Charmaine Bingwa and Nicholas Denton.
Arguably Glenane is doing rather better than all right after scoring roles this year in his current project, Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan, Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like a Girl and Drunk History, Eureka Productions’ half-hour comedy which screened during Network Ten’s Pilot Week.

Jodie Foster’s first directing gig was on George Romero’s creepy anthology TV show Tales From The Darkside. In 1988, she directed Do Not Open This Box, a sort of revisited version of the old Brothers Grimm tale The Fisherman and his Wife about an avaricious woman who abuses a supernatural gift, and her long-suffering husband. It was a morality story warning against greed and urging viewers to be careful what they wish for.
Almost thirty years later, Foster has come full circle with Black Mirror episode Arkangel. Here, once again, she directs an instalment of a sinister anthology series that poses its viewers an ethical problem.

Netflix has released a promo trailer for the Jodie Foster-directed episode of Black Mirror Season 4. The episode is called "Arkangel" and it stars Rosemarie Dewitt, Brenna Harding (A Place to Call Home) and Bloodline's Owen Teague.
As you might expect, the episode looks intense! All we know about the story that "Arkangel" will tell so far is in this trailer. A mother's daughter goes missing at a park briefly and she has a major panic attack like any mom would. But, this scare prompts her to take certain precautions, so she has something implanted into her child's brain. I have no idea what this is going to do, but since this is Black Mirror, we know nothing good is going to come from it.

In front of the camera, Jodie Foster has already played a mother trying to be a good parent under trying circumstances. In Season 4 of “Black Mirror,” she’s directing an episode that looks like a real panic room for 2017.
As part of its ongoing “13 Days of Black Mirror” celebration, Netflix released its first look at “Arkangel,” one of the six new upcoming installments of the anthology series.

Rosemarie DeWitt stars as a mother who resorts to drastic measures after her child nearly disappears. In order to keep tabs on her daughter when they’re apart, she goes to a very particular extreme to make sure it never happens again. True to the nature of “Black Mirror,” a very clean laboratory with impeccably clean, neutral-colored walls is involved.
From the looks of things, this episode also has at least one needle.

‘Black Mirror‘ is a show that I absolutely love. In what is the closest thing to a modern day ‘Twilight Zone‘, creator/show runner Charlie Booker‘s hypnotic series has managed to captivate audiences in it’s first three seasons. The show – which was originally aired on BBC – was expanded to a six episode format after Netflix picked up the show for it’s third, and now fourth season, and is highly anticipated to say the least.
Season 3 was backed by some incredible talent, and based on the trailer for season 4, this trend seems to be continuing. In particular, this upcoming season provides a hefty dose of talent in the director’s chair that includes: Jodie Foster, John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless), David Slade (Hannibal), Colm McCarthy(Peaky Blinders) and Toby Haynes (Dr Who), Tim Van Patten(The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire).

If you're a fan of Black Mirror drop what you're doing and watch the first teaser trailer for Season 4 now! Hell, it looks like there's a Star Trek inspired episode! The promo basically gives us the titles of the episodes in Season 4 and offers a little snippet of footage from each one. I'm definitely intrigued by what I'm seeing! It looks like we've got a great new season of greatness ahead of us.
Black Mirror taps into the collective unease of the modern world, with each standalone episode delivering a sharp, suspenseful tale of the myriad of ways technology has transformed all aspects of human life — in every home, on every desk, in every palm; on a plasma screen, monitor or Smartphone.

Six new realities await.
Netflix has today unveiled the freaky first teaser for Black Mirror season 4, along with the stellar cast list and official episode titles. In keeping with the show’s knack for puzzles and confounding, reality-altering mystery, the trailer above is a super-sleek and fairly ominous peek at those “six new stories,” all of which come from the mind of series creator and showrunner, Charlie Brooker.
Remaining behind the scenes for the time being, today also brings confirmation that Jodie Foster directed season 4’s pilot episode, “Arkangel,” with Toby Haynes (Sherlock), John Hillcoat (Triple 9) and David Slade (Hannibal) also receiving credits. Casting-wise, Black Mirror has added the likes of Jesse Plemons (Fargo), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) and Rosemarie Dewitt (La La Land) to its ranks, and the first-look teaser shows Netflix’s dark, prescient anthology series venturing into full-blown sci-fi territory. One would assume that Star Trek-esque...

The odds were probably stacked against the premiere of the second series of Puberty Blues on Network Ten last night.
The critically-lauded drama had a weak lead-in from The Biggest Challenge Australia, had to contend with the last quarter hour of Seven's My Kitchen Rules and Nine's The Block Fans vs Faves, and was launched at a time when Ten.s overall audience numbers are low. Ten's all-people share was just 9.4% last night.
In light of all that, the Southern Star Entertainment show did as well as it could, drawing 544,000 viewers in the five capital cities, 737,000 nationally.
That was a lot better than The Biggest Challenge.s 325,000/463,000 nationally but well below the show.s first season, when audiences were in the 700,000-800,000 range.
Ten can take some encouragement from the show's peak audience of 685,000 and that it won the timeslot in the 13-29 demographic, although its target audience is 25-...

As the co-writer with Gabrielle Carey of the coming-of-age book which inspired Bruce Beresford.s 1981 movie Puberty Blues and the Network Ten series, Kathy Lette has an almost maternal interest in the show.
The producers, Southern Star.s John Edwards and Imogen Banks, consulted with Lette on the first series and have done so again on the second season, and she.s rapt.
.The producers have been very inclusive and allowed me to read all the scripts which are fresh, funny, harrowing, heart-breaking and searingly honest about love, life, acne, orgasms, bonging-on, bad bikinis, unwanted pregnancies, hard drugs, sexually incontinent boys and the girls who occasionally end up being used as sperm spittoons,. she posted on Facebook.
Lette, who was in her teens when she co-wrote the novel, published in 1979, and who loves puns, added, .In other words, view at your own risqué..

When Madman Entertainment.s Paul Wiegard bought The Act of Killing at last year.s Toronto International Film Festival he had no idea the film would be one of the most controversial and impactful at the Sydney Film Festival.
There were stunned reactions from audiences and critics to the film.s portrayal of the slaughter of alleged Communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals by Indonesian death squads in 1965.. Us director Joshua Oppenheimer, who lives in Copenhagen and dare not set foot again in Indonesia, was on hand to introduce his film and take part in Q&A sessions.
.I had nightmares and insomnia filming some recreations,. Oppenheimer said on Twitter. .I made the film to expose, and what needs to happen now is a process of justice - truth and reconciliation..

The Fenway Institute found that "lesbians and bisexual women are as likely as heterosexual women to develop cervical cancer, but are much less likely to be regularly screened for it, putting them at greater risk of the potentially deadly disease." Get thee to a gyno!
If you're hemming and hawing over joining lesbian dating site, Buzzfeed gives you reasons to just do it.
Australian teen actress Brenna Harding won Most Popular New Female Talent award at the Logies for her role in Puberty Blues, and she thanked her two moms from the stage.
I especially have to thank two women — my beautiful mothers, Vicki and Jackie, who have been so incredibly supportive, and so wonderful, not just in the last three months of shooting, but in all of my 16 years. Thanks so much, mums.
