Rose Marcus KnowMoreGames 14 February - 19 March 2014 Rose Marcus Eli Ping/ Frances Perkins 6 March - 13 April 2014
Rose Marcus’s recent overlapping exhibitions of color photographs speak to the city’s telling and accumulated uncertainties as well as its pleasures. The first series of medium-sized photographs at KnowMoreGames, with their reflective perspectives, its glints and glimmers and facets, has as its subject the porous city and the shifting relationships between interior and exterior spaces, between public and private. Marcus points to the ambiguous hallucinatory city, the city of glass, reflective of a variety of texts.
By contrast, Marcus’s exhibition of large scale photographs at Eli Ping/Frances Perkins of people hanging out at an art opening refers to soma, the social body and the disassociated urban self.
For Marcus there is no grand narrative of Metropolis possible. The city resists easy definition and the artist work veers away from providing totalizing coherencies.

Joe Carroll lives. We know that much ahead of the season 2 premiere of "The Following" this Sunday on Fox. James Purefoy, who plays the show's Edgar Alan Poe-obsessed supervillain, joined the panel at the 2014 Winter TCA press tour to discuss what's next on network TV's most nihilistic drama. "I did tell everybody that I thought I was dead," Purefoy admitted with a smirk about last season's cliffhanger finale. "But I always knew I was going to live." Not every character (or actor) will be so lucky. As creator and showrunner Kevin Williamson teases, "The first episode we answer Claire's...

The death of Richard Matheson on 22 June 2013 marked the end of an amazing career as a novelist and screenwriter. His most enduring legacy will always be as the author of I Am Legend, arguably one of the finest vampire novels ever written. Considered ‘the very peak of paranoid science fiction,’ Matheson’s groundbreaking debut novel is one of the few contemporary vampire stories that came close to the literary excellence of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
With plans of a sequel to the Will Smith misfire I Am Legend (2007) being seriously considered by filmmakers, there is only one thing that fans of Matheson’s outstanding post apocalyptic work are asking “when is there going to be a Proper film version of the book?”
Published in 1954, I Am Legend tells the terrifying tale of Robert Neville, the sole survivor of a mysterious airborne virus that has turned everyone, including his wife Virginia and best friend Ben Cortman,...

Singer/songwriter Lou Reed.
I interviewed Lou Reed in spring of 2003 in conjunction with the release of his latest album, The Raven. A hero of mine since childhood, our chat did not start out well. As I entered his office in Soho, he greeted me with a look combining contempt and outright revulsion: "Oh you little yuppie punk, please say something stupid so I can throw your ass outta my office," it seemed to say. Happily, Reed warmed up over the next two hours and we had a terrific chat about many things, recorded below.
Several months later, I attended his sold-out concert at the Wiltern in L.A. Backstage, I shook his hand and told him how much I enjoyed the show.. He managed a smile, patted my shoulder, and said "Nice work."
Rip Lou, and thanks for it all.

Cyborgs, whose literary origins date back to Edgar Alan Poe in the 1840′s, have provided some of the greatest heroes and villains (and that glorious gray area in between the two) in the science fiction genre. Nowadays, however, it’s becoming more and more likely that your friend or your neighbor is a walking cyborg, with real life cybernetic enhancements made to their body. Within the burgeoning medical technology field, opportunities abound for prosthetic limbs, eyes (eyeborgs or retinal implants), and other mechanized improvements. Plus, you know, life is going to become a William Gibson book, where the Internet will literally be jacked into our heads.
There’s intense debate on whether many of our favorite characters are androids or cyborgs, and I’m not going to waste my time jumping into that claptrap. I’ll just be going by their basic definitions (an android is a robot or synthetic organism made to look human.

You know how that Meat Loaf song says that he'd do anything for love... but he won't do that?
Well, throw those rules out the window because Joe Carroll's followers seem pretty comfortable doing whatever they want to do for love on The Following.
"Mad Love" was all about the relationships from the sad, sick and twisted - or just plain unpredictable. This was definitely more of a look into the characters than anything advancing the plot.
More of Ryan's past began to unfold, ultimately piling on the tragedy for the show's hero. Not only are his parents deceased, he feels that he can't be with the woman he loves, he has heart issues and, more recently, a maniac follower captured his sister.
Life isn't easy street.
It's obvious that beneath the brooding exterior, Ryan has a deep care for people, even if he doesn't outwardly show it. He...

For a while now seasoned A-list movie stars unhappy with the dearth of quality mainstream roles available on the big screen have sought refuge in the world of TV with often successful, career-defining results.
Into that arena steps one Kevin Bacon. Although fresh in many UK viewer’s minds for his UK-centric TV stream-of-consciousness rants in those recent mobile ads, Bacon is a fine Hollywood actor, with over four decades of starring (and equally impressive supporting) roles under his belt. The idea of headlining a show on a large commercial network like Fox must have been an appealing prospect for him (look at the kudos and longevity it brought for his Flatliners co-star Kiefer Sutherland), but if the first episode of this new serial killer drama is anything to go by, he may wish he had used some of that ad money to sits things out further until a TV...

The Hunger Games’ director Gary Ross could be about to make an action thriller based loosely on the life of Harry Houdini…
Having bowed out of the Hunger Games franchise for scheduling reasons, Gary Ross is reportedly in talks to direct a rather different kind of action adventure. This one’s called Houdini, and adapted from a book by William Kalush and Larry Sloman which goes by the considerably longer title, The Secret Life Of Harry Houdini: The Making Of America’s First Superhero.
Just as the recent Sherlock Holmes movies have reinvisioned Conan Doyle’s suave detective as a man of action as well as intellect, Houdini imagines the famous magician and escape artist as an adventurer who’s “part Indiana Jones and Part Sherlock Holmes”. With a script written by Noah Oppenheim, who’s also written the forthcoming WarGames remake, Houdini will introduce a character who, it’s hoped,...

When I began to write this week's recap, Clippy, the little Windows animated assistant, popped up on my computer screen with the following message.
"It looks like you're searching for a reason to live. Would you like help?"
Boy, did I ever. You see, I knew I was in trouble the second this week's A-List: New York episode began inside Earwig's studio. No, that's not it. What's that dude's name?
Earthworm… Eardrum?
Edwing! That's it. As those of you who read these recaps and find joy in my weekly self-flagellation already know, I find that the clothing Edwing trots out for Ryan amounts to those torture devices Jigsaw straps to people in those Saw movies.
But it turns out that, for once, Ryan isn't the only willing fashion victim. Somehow, Ryan has recruited most of the A-List gang to wear these bizarre contraptions for Edwing's upcoming fashion show. This means,...

Age-old question: If someone breaks into a car dealership and vandalizes 13 cars, but also inscribes one with a Latin phrase from an Edgar Alan Poe short story, is this person a daring badass or a giant nerd? Police are searching for a vandal who knows Latin — or at least one famous phrase of the language — after about a dozen cars were damaged at a Fayette County car dealership. The scratching on one of the cars spelled out “Nemo me inpune lacessit.” The phrase means “No one attacks me with impunity.” The quotation, in fact, comes from Edgar Allan Poe’s classic horror story “The Cask of Amontillado.” It is the family crest of Fortunato, the unfortunate victim of revenge by his neighbor, Montressor… “Oh, that’s interesting. Wow,” said Roxanne Conchilla, manager of the dealership. We have to assume this was some sort of hazing for a super-competitive, aggressively nerdy literary club,...

After invisibly slamming doors against the faces of the movie-going public with a modern day ghost story, director Oren Peli is getting a bit more traditional with his next project. He’ll be adapting “The System of of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether,” which either means he’s making a film version of an Edgar Allen Poe short story or of a funky single from The Alan Parsons Project. Apparently it’s the former (since we’ve already ruled out credit going to the Edgar Alan Poe-sons Project), and apparently they’re changing the name (since that whole thing won’t fit on a title card) to simply Eliza Graves. The original story is a black comedic take on the lunatics taking over the loony bin, and the synopsis for the film seems to at least follow the bread crumbs home there. According to Variety, the plot focuses on a recent medical school graduate who begins...
