Joker Dp Lawrence Sher has been named president of the jury for this year’s FilmLight Color Awards, which are open to TV and movie colorists.
The jury also includes cinematographers Greig Fraser, an Oscar winner for Dune who also lensed the upcoming sequel; Natasha Braier, whose credits include Honey Boy; and American Society of Cinematographers past presidents Michael Goi and Stephen Lighthill.
“I’m very excited to be president of the FilmLight Color Awards [jury],” said Sher, who earned an Oscar nom for Joker, and whose work includes Godzilla: King of the Monsters, War Dogs, The Hangover, Garden State and the upcoming Joker sequel. “I believe the color tools we have today are perhaps — along with the digital sensor — the most transformative change in filmmaking in the last 50 years. My relationship and collaboration with my colorists is as important as any relationship I have with my camera, grip and lighting teams.

Capping a year of extraordinary success among Bolivian filmmakers in the international arena, Rodrigo Bellott, a key driving force behind the tiny Central American country’s cinematic advances, has inked with the Gersh Talent Agency and is prepping his first U.S. feature, “Cutting Season.”
To be shot in English with an American cast, “Cutting Season” is written by actor-scribe Brock Yurich, who also stars. It tracks bodybuilder Eddie (Yurich) as he strives towards achieving Pro-card status. Once he realizes that his single mother/de-facto coach can’t help him reach the next level, he hires a new coach but faces a new set of challenges as their complex relationship unfolds.

You can practically smell the midsummer fatigue that wafts through “Alcarràs” on the faintest and most occasional of breezes: a mixture of sweat, baked earth and ripe, plump peaches, inviting in the moment but suggestive of future spoiling. All simple seasonal pleasures are on borrowed time in Carla Simón’s lovely, bittersweet agricultural drama, and not just because winter is inevitably coming. For the large, garrulous Solé clan, who have spent every summer of their lives picking fruit from their familial orchard, this looks to be the last in that tradition, as they face imminent eviction from their patch of land in Catalonia. Yet as they squabble over their uncertain future — and plenty else besides — the sun shines and peaches droop voluptuously from endangered branches. Paris-based Elle Driver has acquired world sales rights outside Spain and France to “La Maternal,” the second film from Pilar Palomero whose 2019’s “Schoolgirls” (“Las niñas”) made her only the fifth first feature director to win a Spanish Academy Best Picture Goya.
BTeam Pictures is handling distribution in Spain.
“Schoolgirls” also won Goyas for director, original screenplay and cinematography (Daniela Cajías), establishing Palomero as a leading light of Catalonia’s newest – and often female – generation of cineastes, making movies which are grounded in authentic local realities, but alert to broader social trends.
Produced like “Schoolgirls” by Spain’s Inicia Films, whose credits also include Carla Simon’s “Summer 1993,” and BTeam Productions, “La Maternal” sees Palomero once more explore the borders between child and adulthood.
“What does it mean to be mother, what does it mean to be a child ? At 14 years old, Carla is both…” runs the film’s logline.

Pilar Palomero’s début feature was the winner of some of the Spanish Film Academy’s most coveted accolades, presented last Saturday at a ceremony broadcast from Malaga. It was a hybrid event (a format all-too familiar from last year’s festival season) that set the scene for a hotly anticipated edition of the Goya Awards on Saturday 6 March, adjudicated by the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.While the presenters held court over an empty Malaga auditorium, nominees dialled in from home via video link. As we all expected in light of its triumph at the Forqué (see our report here) and Forez Awards (here), the night belonged to Schoolgirls, the début feature from Aragon-born director Pilar Palomero. Palomero’s film was celebrating on four accounts, having bagged the Goyas for Best Cinematography (for Daniela Cajías), Best Original Screenplay (written by the director based on her own school days), Best New.
The Goyas were presented by Antonio Banderas from the theatre he owns in Malaga.
