Best Picture favorite “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” were the drama and comedy editing winners at the 74th Ace Eddie Awards, March 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. “Oppenheimer” editor Jennifer Lame is now a step closer to winning the Oscar for deftly balancing Christopher Nolan’s interlocking, subjective POVs of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy) in color and adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white.
The other Oscar nominees are “The Holdovers” (edited by Ace president Kevin Tent), Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Anatomy of Fall,” and “Poor Things.”
“Spider-Man: Across the Universe” won the animation award, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” earned theatrical documentary honors, and “Escaping Twin Flames” took the non-theatrical prize.
TV editing winners included “The Last of Us” for drama series, “Beef” for limited series, “How I Met Your Father” for multi-camera comedy series, “The Bear” for single-camera comedy series,...

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

How does one edit “A Black LadySketch Show” when comedic talent such as Issa Rae, Gabrielle Dennis and Robin Thede have gone off-script? “It’s a challenge because everyone is giving you something hilarious,” editor Stephanie Filo says.
Filo is no slouch herself. This year, she achieved something remarkable, landing three Emmy nominations for her editing work on HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and Hulu’s “History of the World, Part II.”
On “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” Filo relished the chance to edit a Coral Reefs gang sequence on the “WeMurk” sketch featuring Rae, Thede and Dennis . “I didn’t get to cut the other iterations, so I got to have a swing at it,” Filo says. This time, Tracee Ellis Ross, who she describes as “hysterical,” was also in the sketch.

The editors for the Hulu sketch comedy series, “History of the World: Part II,” had experience from all over the map but little in terms of sketch comedy. For George Mandl, Angel Gamboa Bryant and Daniel Flesher most of their past experience comes from half-hour and multi-camera comedies and variety programming like stand-up specials. But the presence of showrunners Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen served as a massive help in the editing process. “When we got in the edit bay and got the chance to work with them, if we asked a question about a scene or we wanted to try something, they’d say ‘Try it. Let’s see.’ Every time it elevated the scene,” Bryant tells Gold Derby during our recent web chat (watch the exclusive video interview above).

The half hour sketch show, which spoofs a wide range of genres, stars creator and co-producer Robin Thede alongside Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend. The fourth season premiered on HBO in April.

The team behind “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” knew full well there was a fine line between staying authentic to the story of the titular serial killer and glamorizing his crimes, and that extended to every single department on the Netflix series.
“My biggest fear when I started working on this project was that Jeff could come off as a sympathetic character, which I know is not something that any of us wanted,” editor Stephanie Filo said in a new installment of TheWrap’s of “How I Did It” sponsored by Netflix. “I think that also led to us dialing back in the edit as well. A conscious choice that I think all the editors on this project made was that we should really strip back how often we’re cutting and then really just live in these wider shots where you can just see the moment happening...

It’s late March and “A Black Lady Sketch Show” creator and star Robin Thede is working with the show’s editors to put the finishing touches on Season 4 of the half-hour HBO comedy.
“First season,” she tells Variety, “I was like, I want every third line to be a joke. Second season, every other line. Now, literally every line is a joke, even the setups to the punchlines. It’s crazy.”
With sketches that riff on relatable themes — like hair woes, ashy skin and the politics of the Black church — “A Black Lady Sketch Show” frames the world from a Black woman’s point of view. Even when the subject matter has nothing to do with Blackness, the show’s existence is impactful, a sentiment Whoopi Goldberg underlined during a recent episode of “The View.”

Robin Thede ain’t here for any more Emmy snubs for the hilarious Black women from “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”
“We’re showing you the characters behind the characters,” she recently told Variety at a Q&a panel. “I love it. You see the full range of actors on the show. But I want to note that none of the show’s actors have ever been nominated for an Emmy, and they deserve it.”
Four seasons into the groundbreaking HBO series, the creative minds and strategists hope to change that.

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.
Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.
“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.
Other winners included awards season faves “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Fire of Love,” and “The Bear.” See the complete list of winners, marked in bold, below.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” took yet another top film prize at yet another awards show on Sunday. At the American Cinema Editors (Ace) Eddie Awards, the maximalist movie directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won Best Edited Feature Film for Paul Rogers’ work that stitched together all those multiverses. On the drama side of theatrical film releases, “Top Gun: Maverick,” edited by Eddie Hamilton, took top honors.
Surprises were few among the film winners, with “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” edited by Ken Schretzmann and Holly Klein, triumphing yet again. And “Fire of Love,” edited by Erin Casper and Jocelyne Chaput, followed up its recent DGA win with another victory in the documentary category.

Everything Everywhere’s Rogers thanked mentors, friends and family, including the Daniels, remembering cutting the movie during lockdown. Top Gun: Maverick took the marquee Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor and Everything Everywhere All At Once landed the top Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) award at the 73rd Ace Eddie Awards Sunday. Hosted by Ashley Nicole Black, the winners were announced live in a ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Eddie Hamilton, Ace, edited Maverick, a film that earned Tom Cruise the Producer’s Guild’s David O. Selznick award at last week’s PGA Awards. The honor puts Hamilton and Top Gun: Maverick in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, for which both Maverick and Everything Everywhere are nominated.
Since the turn of the 21st century, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has gone on to score the Academy Award for Best Editing 13 of 22 times — but none of the past three years. In 2022, King Richard took that Ace trophy, but Dune went home with the Oscar.

Prepare for more Black lady hilarity as Robin Thede’s Emmy-winning HBO comedy series “A Black Lady Sketch Show” has started production on its fourth season.

The first three seasons of the sketch series have garnered 13 Emmy nominations and three wins.
Variety has exclusively learned that production is now underway in Los Angeles, with returning core cast members Thede, Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend teasing a new sketch (directed by Stokes) set at “Brothaby’s” in this first-look image. The Emmys sure looked a lot like the Grammys on Saturday night. The Beatles, Adele, Lizzo and the Super Bowl halftime show were some of the biggest winners at night one of the Creative Arts Emmys, where music took center stage.
Ironically, the Grammy Awards itself didn’t win a major award, but music specials were big winners in key categories including outstanding documentary or nonfiction series, which “The Beatles: Get Back” won. It’s been a while since John, Paul, George and Ringo were thanked at an awards show as much as they were on Saturday night, but the Disney+ series won five Emmys overall — the most of the night, tied with CBS’ “Adele: One Night Only.”
“Adele” was named variety special (pre-recorded). Other big music winners included “Pepsi Super Bowl Lvi Halftime Show Starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent” with three wins,...

“A Black Lady Sketch Show,” created by Robin Thede with fellow actors Gabrielle Dennis, Ashley Nicole Black and Skye Townsend is certainly an improvisational, production-heavy, comic masterpiece. But who knew that it was in the business of making history?
Last year for Season 2, editor Stephanie Filo made history as part of the first-ever, all women-of-color editing team to win an Emmy. Now, in 2022, for its third season, the editing team of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” — Filo, Taylor Mason, Bradinn French, Robyn Wilson — are the first all-Black editing team to be nominated for an Emmy.
Of this achievement, each editor is proud.
“For all of us, what’s important is representation,” says Filo. “’Black Lady Sketch Show’ proves what it means when you prioritize inclusion. Robin is efficient at finding diverse teams behind, and before, the camera.”

For our recent webchat, the Emmy winner adds, “It meant a lot to be representation in that way. But I think we shouldn’t have been the first all women of color team winning in 2021. With seven award wins — including one Primetime Emmy — and at least 40 nominations already, HBO’s narrative series “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is a rib cracker. The show, which made its debut on August 2, 2019, recently concluded its third season. While many TV shows struggle to keep their audience captivated across many seasons, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” has won itself a dedicated fan base. The show racked up 100 critic ratings on Rotten Tomatoes in its first two seasons — which is quite impressive.

Editor’s Note: On June 22, 2020, veteran editor and Sunwise Media co-founder Ri-Karlo Handy penned a guest column for Deadline on the wide ranging response to his social media call for Black union editors just days beforehand. As Americans took to the streets after the killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd to demand an end to institutional violence and racism in numbers unprecedented for decades, Handy turned part of the spotlight on Hollywood. The reaction to his outcry was almost immediate. It was also encouraging from unions, to schools, to studios and every other crevice of Tinseltown. Today, Handy examines what a difference the past two years have made, and what more there is to do as political and cultural sands appear to be shifting again.
Two years ago, following George Floyd’s horrifying murder and civil unrest that followed, every industry including Hollywood scrambled to solve for their lack of diversity.

“The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Mandalorian,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Crown” and “Pose” were among the top winners on Saturday as the first wave of this year’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards were handed out in downtown Los Angeles.
Netflix prevailed among networks and platforms with 12 wins, paced by seven trophies collected by limited series “The Queen’s Gambit.”
The ceremony was held outdoors in a tent in the L.A. Live complex because of pandemic conditions. Attendance was much smaller than in previous years because of the need for social distancing to protect against Covid-19 outbreaks. Those who did attend the show in person went through a gauntlet of paperwork and screenings on site to prove that they were vaccinated and had tested negative for the virus within the past 48 hours.
“The Queen’s Gambit’s” haul included wins for period costumes, period makeup, production design and cinematography for a limited series.

“The Queen’s Gambit’s” haul included wins for period costumes, period makeup, production design and cinematography for a limited series.

It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).
(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)
Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.
None of the three Creative Arts Emmys shows are being televised live. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

“A Black Lady Sketch Show” continues to break barriers, not only in front of the screen but behind the scenes. Daysha Broadway, Stephanie Filo and Jessica Hernández are the first women of color editing team to be nominated for an Emmy, landing a nomination in Best Variety Picture Editing alongside such productions as “Hamilton” and “Saturday Night Live.” “For me, it’s been a gratifying moment,” says Broadway in an exclusive new webchat for Gold Derby. “It means that people are paying attention to how great the show is.” Watch the full interview with Broadway, Filo and Hernández above.
While Broadway has been with “A Black Lady Sketch Show” for both seasons now, Filo and Hernández joined for Season 2, where they had to adjust to the show’s specific rhythms and comedic style. “If you look at a live sketch show, there’s pausing for laughs,” explains Filo. “It’s...

The original editors of Lifetime’s now-famous January 2019 docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly” walked out over creative disagreements on how best to portray sexual assault survivors, according to a bombshell report published Wednesday morning by The Hollywood Reporter.
Though these events took place in 2018 during post-production on the docuseries, the story recently came to light when Peggy Tachdjian, a TV editor who used to work at production company Bunim/Murray and witnessed the events take place, wrote an Instagram post in June in support of the editors along with an image that said, “Let’s talk about performative allyship.”
“In 2018 @bunimmurray was making a show called Surviving R. Kelly. I saw them take the step to hire 5 Poc editors for this project that we all knew would have deep impact for the African American community,” Tachdjian wrote.

Long before it won a Peabody Award, the entire original editing team on “Surviving R. Kelly” walked off the project due to disputes over the creative direction of the Emmy-nominated docuseries, a new report from THR shares. The editors, most of whom are Black, resigned after notes about centering survivors and addressing Black audiences were ignored. Many elements of the original cut ended up in the final product that aired, but the first editing team was not listed in the credits.
Following reports of the dispute, their names have been restored to the Peabody Award website, but are not currently listed on Netflix. “Surviving R. Kelly” originally aired as six episodes on Lifetime in January 2019. It was followed with a five-part sequel earlier this year called “Surviving R. Kelly: Part II — The Reckoning.”

Nine months after “The Birth of A Nation” had its triumphant Sundance debut, and two months after a rape scandal surrounding writer-director Nate Parker threatened to engulf it, the controversial film has moved into its wide release. And to recognize the occasion, Fvck Rape Culture staged a silent sit-in protest in the courtyard outside Arclight Hollywood, just as the film began its first showings at 7pm Thursday.

People began gathering a few minutes before 7, and by 7:15 the attendees — at least three dozen, along with three dogs — were seated and the candles (largely electric, with the exception of about a half-dozen pillar candles) arranged.
They sat in silence for the next 45 minutes, uninterrupted by passersby heading to the theater or the complex’s 24 Hour Fitness. Security guards, as well as a few uniformed cops, occasionally patrolled the area,...
