Heading into Cannes, where it has four films in official selection and three projects participating in the Great 8 showcase, BBC Film has unveiled further details about its upcoming slate.
Among new projects in advanced development is Remi Weekes’ follow-up to His House, which is being produced by Tanya Segatchian and John Woodward’s Bright Star. Details for the untitled feature are being kept under wraps but BBC Film director Eva Yates told Screen: “It’s not a horror.”
Also in advanced development is Raine Allen-Miller’s second feature after Rye Lane, a south London-set heist comedy that she has also written.

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.
While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

Jonathan Glazer hasn't made a feature film since 2013's Under The Skin, but his big return to screens with The Zone Of Interest has certainly been winning praise and attention. And so it continued with the 44th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, where Zone took film of the year, director and technical achievement.
Yet it shared the limelight with Andrew Haigh's All Of Us Strangers, which won British/Irish film of the year, saw Andrew Scott nab a well deserved acting award and his co-star Paul Mescal go home with the award for his various excellent performances of last and this year.
Charles Melton, who has been largely unlucky at other awards ceremonies, went home with a supporting actor award, while some more regular winners such as Anatomy Of A Fall's writing team of director Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, plus Emma Stone and The Holdovers' Da'Vine Joy Randolph all repeated.

What happened to “Barbie”?
This is likely to be one of the hot-button questions following the announcement of the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards nominations on Thursday, which saw Greta Gerwig’s cultural phenomenon and box office juggernaut emerge without nods in the best film and director categories.
While the film’s five BAFTA nominations is, of course, still a tally to be very proud of, the figure is likely to have caught many awards-watchers off guard. The film landed 15 places in the BAFTA Longlists earlier this month following the first round of voting, tying for first place alongside “Oppenheimer” (which ultimately earned 13 nominations) and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (nine nods). Given its standing as the biggest film of 2023 and one that has smashed so many significant records along the way, many may have assumed a best film and director nomination were all but guaranteed.
But for BAFTA, it’s simply not the case.

Would I have survived this life if there was no cinema? This is the sort of question I end up asking myself when I am fortunate enough to come across a movie like Scrapper. In many ways, movies work as a sort of wish fulfillment. Because how else would you describe The Florida Project in reverse, where the kid gets saved from abandonment instead of running away to oblivion?
Charlotte Regan’s debut feature, the Grand Jury winner at this year’s Sundance, reminds you of another film that was also directed by a young woman named Charlotte. Not to mention, Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun from last year also happens to have a thirty-something father and a twelve-something daughter at the center of it. However, unlike Aftersun, which is essentially a trip down memory lane, Scrapper is quite content to linger in its present. A lot of information is withheld, and not many words are said,...

Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

From buzzy romcom Rye Lane via the psychosexual noir Femme to the teen thrills of How to Have Sex, six nominees take us behind the scenes of the exciting new wave of British cinema
On the seventh floor of One Hundred Shoreditch hotel in east London, a group is gathered to celebrate their nominations for this year’s British independent film awards (Bifas). The favoured look is all angular shoulders, up-and-coming designers and luxe fabrics; these are some of the most innovative talents in British cinema today, and they dress like it.
Is every year this exciting? Or do these nominees represent the start of something fresh, the crest of a new wave? The solid box office performance of frontrunners Scrapper and Rye Lane bodes well – both have broken the $1m takings mark worldwide – as does the more ineffable general mood. “It definitely feels like that,” says Paris Zarcilla, writer-director...

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

Story Ave starring Luis Guzman grossed $9.85k in a limited opening at one theater, Quad Cinema, with multiple sold-out shows. The first feature from director Aristotle Torres, which won for Best Cinematography at SXSW (see Deadline review) expands to Chicago and the Bronx next week, followed by LA and additional markets October 13.
Guzman plays a no-nonsense subway operator who becomes an unlikely mentor to a teenager (Asante Blackk) caught up in the dangerous world of Bronx graffiti gangs. Written by Torres and Bonsu Thompson. Produced by Jamie Foxx.
In an overall market “that’s not exactly easy,” Story Ave pulled in a diverse crowd, said Kino’s director of theatrical distribution, Maxwell Wolkin. “You have to get creative, and find an angle, and find things that hit. And it’s not necessarily always what you expect, but this film is audience friendly, it’s got a real voice, it’s connecting with people.

Having spent time with her grandmother on a north London council estate, director Regan was determined to recapture her happy childhood. She talks about being a teenage paparazzi, casting a non-actor child as her star and ‘chasing the fun’
Scrapper, Charlotte Regan’s coming-of-age comedy drama has been described by one critic as like Ken Loach meeting Wes Anderson. Talking spiders suddenly appear on screen; little mockumentary interludes allow characters to tell the camera what they’re really thinking.
“It comes from chasing the fun,” says Regan. “A lot of the working-class cinema I grew up watching was so joyless. Endless trauma. The characters were allowed one moment of happiness in the whole film, looking at a sunset on their balcony. It’s like: ‘How lovely for those working-class people to look at a sunset on their balcony.’ Do you know what I mean?”...

Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper is a baffling clash of two incompatible visions. The film is partly presented as a glum bit of kitchen-sink realism, tracing the hard-knock life of 12-year-old Georgie (Lola Campbell) in the aftermath of her mother’s death. But it’s also pitched as a twee indie dramedy, showing that Georgie has gotten by on her own in much the same way that so many quirky movie children have had to function like miniature adults.
At its most serious, the film watches as Georgie cleans her cramped apartment before then going off with an older boy, Ali (Alin Uzun), to steal bike parts and sell them for money. She’s never known her father, Jason (Harris Dickinson), and then one day he crawls over her backyard fence and demands to stay with her. From such moments, Scrapper swings discordantly toward the cutesy, as when Georgie tries to...

While the fall movie lineup continues to shift due to studios adamantly deciding not to fairly pay the writers and actors responsible for them being in business in the first place, not much has changed when it comes to August. Aside from A24 yanking Julio Torres’ Problemista from its August 4 opening, the rest of the calendar has stayed intact and here are the films that should be on your radar.
13. What Comes Around (Amy Redford; Aug. 4)
One of the most divisive films to premiere at TIFF last year was Amy Redford’s What Comes Around (formerly titled Roost). Led by Grace Van Dien, Summer Phoenix, Jesse Garcia, and Kyle Gallner, the thriller tracked a young love affair that becomes a menacing game of cat-and-mouse where nothing is what it seems. Jared Mobarak said in his review, “What Comes Around is a tricky film to talk about without massive spoilers unless,...

If it's March, it must be time to start thinking ahead to summer and the welcome return of Sundance Film Festival: London, which will kick off its 10th edition in July. And Scrapper, starring Harris Dickinson, will kick off the festivities this year.
Scrapper follows Georgie (Lola Campbell), a dreamy 12-year-old girl, who lives happily alone in her London flat, filling it with magic. Suddenly, her estranged father (Dickinson) turns up and forces her to confront reality.
The film will debut as the festival opener on 6 July at Picturehouse Central, with additional screenings planned during the event's run between 6-9 July. “Opening Sundance Film Festival: London is insane and not something we imagined getting to do," says Regan. "I'm so, so excited to bring the film to UK audiences and to get an extra step of the film's journey with the legends at Sundance." Scrapper won the World Cinema Grand...
