VidCon has added a bevy of bellwether 'Featured Creators' for its 10th annual gathering to be held this summer in Anaheim, Calif.
The Viacom-owned convention will welcome Alisha Marie, Madilyn Bailey, Rickey Thompson, Jason Nash, Smosh co-founder Ian Hecox, Simone Giertz, and Matt Steffanina. And given that VidCon plans to fete Og creators in honor of a decade spent in Anaheim, these stars will join a separate group of Founding Featured Creators -- or YouTubers who have been attending the event since its inception. The first round of Founding Featured Creators were announced in October, including Shay Carl, Ze Frank, Tay Zonday, Brittani Louise Taylor, and Julie Nunes.
Featured Creators -- and Founding Featured Creators -- attend VidCon for free, and appear across varied programming initiatives, including panel discussions, Q&As, and meet-ups.

To celebrate a decade of VidCons, the storied digital convention has announced a new class of ‘Featured Creator’ for this year's event -- or the YouTube stars who are invited free of charge and featured prominently across panels and programming.
This year, as VidCon winks back to its founding days, the Viacom-owned conference will spotlight a handful of Og YouTube stars it's referring to as 'Founding Featured Creators' -- or early viral stars who have attended VidCon since its inception. Nevertheless, many of these creators are no longer active on the platform today.
The initial roster includes controversy-ridden vlogger and entrepreneur Shay Carl, top BuzzFeed exec Ze Frank, deep-voiced crooner Tay Zonday, Lgbtq commentary creator Michael Buckley, musician Dave Days, music video parody artist Brittani Louise Taylor, retired vlogger Will Hyde, and singer Julie Nunes. VidCon founders John and Hank Green have also included themselves within the Founding Featured Creator class,...

As Shay Carl Butler looks to atone for mistakes he has made in his personal life, he has returned to the YouTube channel he and his family made famous. For the first time in more than a year, the Butler family has posted a new vlog on the Shaytards channel, which went on hiatus in February 2017 as the family's patriarch was embroiled in a scandal.
Last February, an adult webcam performer shared explicit text messages Shay Carl had sent her. Shortly thereafter, the YouTube star admitted that his chronic alcoholism had returned, and though he was already planning a hiatus, he immediately took a step away from YouTube to sort out his personal issues.
In November, Shay Carl returned to his YouTube channel with a contrite vlog, and the latest Shaytards video, which chronicles the Butler family's trip to Washington, DC, he offers more apologies for his transgressions. "I've had a really hard year.

For nine years, Shay "Shay Carl" Butler was one of YouTube's most prominent family vloggers. On the Shaytards channel, Butler and his wife Colette shared their lives as they reared five children together.
In 2016, Butler announced that he would begin a break from the Shaytards vlog on March 5, 2017, but less than a month before he reached the start of that hiatus, he found himself at the center of a significant scandal. In February, adult webcam performer Aria Nina revealed that Butler had sent her explicit messages and videos of himself masturbating. In response to that news, Butler revealed the return of his alcoholism, tweeting that it had "manifested itself back into [his] life." The Shay Carl and Shaytards channels immediately fell silent.
Nine months later, Butler has returned to YouTube, and he is to make amends for his past and start fresh. In a five-minute vlog, he apologized for his indiscretions,...

When he traveled to Los Angeles in order to film the second season of his YouTube Red series Scare PewDiePie, Swedish gamer Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg said he would use daily vlogs to document his adventures in the City of Angels. Instead, the stress of his busy schedule took an unfortunate toll on his psyche, and after completing 14 of his 22 planned vlogs, he decided to cancel his initial plan and take a brief break from YouTube.
PewDiePie’s vlogging series carried the seemingly nonsensical title “Birdabo,” and in the parts of it he did complete, he showcased the off-set portions of his westward trip. At the same time, he was far away from home and the pressure that a daily vlogging schedule requires turned out to be more mentally taxing than he expected. “I’m just really sad about it,” he said in the video announcing his break. “I hope you understand.

A documentary that goes inside the lives and careers of YouTube stars is now available. It’s called Vlogumentary, and it’s available to YouTube Red subscribers through the YouTube channel of vlogger Shay Carl.
Vlogumentary, which has been in production for years, is the latest in an ever-growing series of films that discuss the growth of the online video industry and the ways in which the relationships between creators and their fans have evolved over time. The doc, directed by Matthew Testa and produced by Shay Carl along with Morgan Spurlock (of Super Size Me fame) discusses several well-known events in the 11-year history of YouTube. It talks about Charles Trippy’s daily vlog streak, the launch of fan conventions like VidCon, and much more in between. Along the way, viewers receive insights from some of the most popular creators on the Internet, including Joey Graceffa, Glozell, and Hank Green.

Before the Ice Bucket Challenge, there was “Super Size Me.” When little-known filmmaker Morgan Spurlock challenged himself to eat at McDonald’s for every meal, three times a day, for thirty days straight, he anticipated the era of viral marketing with purpose. The documentary grossed $11.5 million theatrically in 2004 and ignited an international conversation about the fast food industry.
By appearing in his film as subject and narrator, Spurlock popularized a kind of personality-driven commentary that is now regularly found in another format — video blogging, or “vlogging.” And that’s why he’s a good fit to produce “Vlogumentary,” the first feature film to explore one of the more ubiquitous ways that personalities develop on the site.

The film not only offers fans an intimate look at their favorite vloggers, but also demystifies the strange career path for would-be skeptics.

Perennial YouTube family vlogging patriarch Shay Butler announced last week that he would be taking a year-long break from his channel beginning next March. And now we might have a better sense of how the 36-year-old Maker Studios co-founder will be occupying himself during his well-earned sabbatical.
Utah-based Butler has purchased a local ski resort called Pebble Creek Ski Area, according to the Idaho State Journal. Pebble Creek was previously owned by a group of investors for over three decades. Butler and his wife -- fellow YouTube star Colette Butler -- initially moved to purchase the property in nearby Inkom, Idaho, for an undisclosed sum last February, though the deal couldn’t be finalized until this month when the U.S. Forest Service officially signed off on the sale.

For the past nine years, vlogger Shay Carl has been one of YouTube’s central figures. By his estimation, he has released more than 4,446 videos, and the fans who have tuned into those updates have been able to follow along as he has raised six kids, lost 112 pounds, co-founded online video network Maker Studios, and undergone many more personal journeys.
Viewers who have enjoyed Shay’s work so far will want to pay close attention to his next five months of activity, because after March 5th, 2017, he’s taking a break. He has revealed his plan to take a year-long hiatus from the YouTuber life; during that 12-month period, he will attempt to raise his children in a more private setting and act like “a normal family.”

Vlogger Joey Graceffa just announced his second book -- a dystopian young adult novel titled Children Of Eden that serves as a follow-up to his 2015 memoir In Real Life.
Children Of Eden, the details of which Graceffa shared in a video today, will be published by the same outfit behind In Real Life -- Keywords Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster founded in partnership with UTA that has also released books by YouTube stars iJustine, Shane Dawson, Shay Carl, and Connor Franta. Children Of Eden, priced at roughly $15.00 and dropping October 4, is currently available for preorder in the U.S., U.K., and Australia on Graceffa’s website.

While Shay Carl Butler is often thought to be the forefather of modern vlogging, it was actually his wife, Colette, who fired up a vlogging camera for the first time -- capturing her husband as he danced around their living room in a black-and-blue unitard. This clip -- and Butler’s snazzy attire -- subsequently inspired the name of their 4 million-subscribers-strong channel, the Shaytards.
This is just one of many insights to be found in Vlogumentary, a feature documentary about the rise of YouTube’s vlogging community, which was announced back in 2013 and premiered last night at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Butler began working on the film with fellow creator Corey Vidal, and the two subsequently raised more than $200,000 from 5,400 Indiegogo donors. In 2015, they brought famed documentarian Morgan Spurlock on board, who agreed to produce the film.

What The Tribeca Film Festival’s First ‘Digital Creators Market’ Says About The Future Of Indie Film
If social influencers and digital filmmakers needed more proof that they were bound to disrupt the traditional film and television industries, here’s more: for the first time, the 15th annual Tribeca Film Festival has announced an exclusive event to tout the burgeoning space.
Kicking off tonight with a screening of the long-anticipated Shay Carl-starring, Morgan Spurlock-produced Vlogumentary, the Tribeca Film Festival’s inaugural Digital Creators Market takes place tomorrow. During the event, online content creators like Jon Cozart, Mikey Murphy, Ingrid Nilsen, and Meghan Tonjes will connect with buyers, producers, and agents to discuss potential content ventures.
The event is also slated to feature a lineup of high-profile screenings, including YouTube Red’s Sing It! and Fullscreen’s Electra Woman & Dyna Girl. The Vlogumentary screening is particularly pertinent given that the film aims to cover the very rise of digital creators that the inaugural Market reflects.

YouTube is usually known as a community full of young adults, teenagers, and tweens. But as many creators who grew up with YouTube since its inception (like Philip DeFranco and Shay Carl) enter into their adult years, video content for a more mature demographic has focused on babies and family life.
Video rights management and monetization company Zefr decided to analyze the popularity of baby brands and video content on YouTube in its new “Parenting on YouTube” report. And in terms of presence on Google’s online video site, diaper company Pampers has all others beat, with over 200 billion total video views across almost 8,000 videos featuring the brand.

Shay “Shay Carl” Butler is taking a cue from ABC’s longest-running entertainment show, America’s Funniest Home Videos (Afv). ShayFV, the new series from the Maker Studios founder and YouTube celebrity based on Afv’s comedic videos, launched on October 19, 2014 on Maker.TV.
In each of the show's 17 episodes, Carl will re-enact scenes from old Afv videos with his children before sitting down and simply enjoying clips from the comedy show’s history. For the debut episode, Carl is inspired by an old Afv recording of parents giving their kids caramel-covered onions. He prepares the same “treat” for his children and says, “sure, it’s mean, but it’s also hilarious.”

For the debut episode, Carl is inspired by an old Afv recording of parents giving their kids caramel-covered onions. He prepares the same “treat” for his children and says, “sure, it’s mean, but it’s also hilarious.”

On September 7th, the Streamy Awards will celebrate the online video creators who defined their industry in 2014. Ahead of the event, four entertainers have been presented with their own special honors. Tyler Oakley, Michelle Phan, Shay Carl, and Pitbull are the first ever recipients of the Streamys Icon Awards, which "recognize the accomplishments of remarkable individuals who have demonstrated true leadership in online video and entertainment." Each Icon Award winner was honored in one of four broad categories. Oakley's work with The Trevor Project helped earn him the "Activism" Icon Award, Phan's beauty videos led the way to an "Inspiration" award, Carl's status as a Maker Studios founder made him a logical choice in the "Entrepreneurship" category, and Pitbull's ability to engage audiences around the word led him to a "Convergence" award. “The Streamys have always honored emerging talent in the online video community, but this year, these innovators have...

It's another installment of the weekly Tubefilter Chart of the Top 50 Most Viewed U.S. YouTube Channels and it's a good one for videos of adults playing with children's toys and children playing with antiquated entertainment technology. Chart Toppers DisneyCollectorBR took home the #1 spot in the U.S. this week. The online video collection of adults showcasing and playing with toys meant for kids in Pre-k racked up over 55.2 million views on the week. Shakira dropped down to second place. The international pop star's World Cup 2014 anthem, "La La La" made a healthy contribution to her channel's weekly view count of more than 53.6 million views. In third this week is The Fine Bros. Benny and Rafi Fine's steady supply of quality entertainment and kids playing with now antiquated forms of technology helped their channel score more than 42.7 million views in the last seven days. Katy Perry is up next in the #4 spot.

YouTubers who wish to unite their fragmented audiences now have another option. A group of digital media veterans have officially launched Victorious, which aims to assist YouTube content creators who wish to engage with their fans on social and mobile platforms. Among Victorious' execs is Bing Chen, who left his position as the leader of YouTube's creator development initiative last month. Chen will serve as Victorious' Cco, and his close ties to the YouTube community have helped Victorious secure some big-name users, including Michelle Phan, Shay Carl, Ryan Higa, and Boyce Avenue. Essentially, Chen and the rest of the Victorious team (which includes CEO Sam Rogoway and Cto Michael Todd) want to help these creators answer the increased fragmentation of their audiences, which are now spread across YouTube, Twitter, Vine, and other social networks. Victorious' plan for uniting these streams runs through mobile apps it will design with its clients.

As it rolls through its tenth season, Food Network Star regularly switches up its format to keep things fresh. For its latest twist, the Food Network reality show brought its contestants to YouTube Space La, where they attempted to make a "viral video" with some help from YouTuber Shay Carl. Shay is accurately described by a Food Network blog post as a "YouTube legend," but his appearance on a cooking show initially seems a bit mismatched. However, the episode included no actual cooking. Instead, Shay was tasked with coaching three separate teams as they each produced video advertisements for Hershey's products like Reese's, Almond Joy, and PayDay. Many YouTube professionals would tell the Food Network that it is nigh-impossible to engineer a viral video from scratch, but the three teams gave it their best shot, rolling out a trio of videos that featured everything from nudity to the Spanish language...

Star Wars Day takes place on May 4th, and the YouTube community is ready to celebrate. Four different YouTube channels have shot Star Wars-themed videos at YouTube Space La, with Lucasfilm chipping in by providing a set. The four videos were shot on a "cantina" set built by Nerdist for last year's Course of the Force charity drive. After that event concluded, Nerdist donated the set to Lucasfilm, which has in turn gave it back to the YouTube community by temporarily setting it up at YouTube Space La. The videos are rolling out across four days during the week before May the 4th. The first one to see release was a lightsaber duel between YouTubers Corey Vidal and Craig "Wheezy Waiter" Benzine (with Shay Carl as the ornery bartender). It's the fourth duel between Vidal and Benzine; the previous three can also be found on Vidal's ApprenticeA channel. The...

Devin Super Tramp (Aka Devin Graham) gave us a thrill a few weeks back when he launched himself off a cliff and hurtled through the air on the world's biggest rope swing. That video, combined with Graham's other stunt and VFX-based offerings, have pushed him over the one million subscriber mark. We talked to the high-flying creator about his accomplishment and his upcoming extreme sports series, which he is creating with the help of Fullscreen. Tubefilter: What do you have to say to your million subscribers? Devin Super Tramp: A couple years ago I would have never thought it would be possible. I remember going to Vidcon during its first year and listening to all the other YouTubers speak, people like MysteryGuitarMan, Shay Carl. I didn't even have a YouTube channel then, and I remember thinking that it wasn't even possible. So what do I have to say? I'm so...

Maker Studios just announced moments ago that they signed Snoop Dogg and his YouTube channel WestFestTV to develop a slate of exclusive programming. "He's been down to visit us a few times, and dug what we were doing and the vibe of the studio," Danny Zappin, CEO of Maker Studios, told Tubefilter in an exclusive interview (video coming). "He really understands social media and the importance of connecting directly with an audience." Snoop Dogg has built a huge following on Twitter, and is looking to expand his online presence on YouTube. "YouTube has allowed me to get at my fans around the world directly. I've focused on listening to my fans and giving them the type of real, uncut content that they want from Tha Boss Dogg," said Snoop Dogg. Comedian Bobby Lee, long time member of Fox's MadTV, has joined Maker Studios to reload veteran YouTube comedy network The Station. The Station, Maker's original YouTube comedy network featuring over a million subscribers, will be the home of BobbyTV, a new original YouTube channel created by Lee and financed by Maker. "I have my own channel and I can be as crazy as I want to be?!" said Lee. "On the other hand they say I have to start tweeting now. They’ll regret that." The Station predates the YouTube Partner Program and is credited with launching many top members of Youtube’s all-time most subscribed personalities, including KassemG, LisaNova, Totally Sketch, Shane Dawson, Shay Carl, and Phil DeFranco. Maker Studios made out big with YouTube's big announcement last night revealing its first wave of original channels. Maker Studios was one of the big winners with three original channels—the most channels awarded to any producer. Of the 96 original channels announced yesterday, most only received one; only six other producers were given three channels: Bedrocket Media, BermanBraun, Clevver Media, Demand Media, Electus, and IconicTV. YouTube has committed over $100 million dollars for its latest content initiative, tapping A-list producers and top talent to create premium content. Yet unlike many of the new Hollywood-focused channels blessed by YouTube, what Maker founders Dan Zappin, Lisa Donovan, and Ben Donovan have created along with talent co-founders KassemG, Michael Gallagher, Shay Carl, and many others is something built from the ground up. "YouTube itself has changed the world, some individual videos on YouTube and certain YouTube Partners have impacted the world, and now whole...
