It may not have been his plan, but Russell Crowe is capitalizing on the return of the iconic “The Exorcist” franchise with separate standalone religious horror films “The Exorcism,” out June 7, and 2023’s “The Pope’s Exorcist.”

Consider it a meta twist: The film centers on Anthony Miller (Crowe), a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. Footloose follows the basic structure of the ’84 original, albeit transplanted to the South instead of the Midwest American setting. Ren McCormack, who arrives to stay with family in the small town of Bomont. But he soon runs afoul of the local reverend (Dennis Quaid) who, along with the town government, has pushed through measures to ban public dancing in the aftermath of a tragic accident that killed a carload of high school students.
