"Am I dreaming?" "I see the whole world in your eyes." Gravitas has released an official trailer for an indie feature titled The Place of No Words, made by actor / filmmaker Mark Webber, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. This deeply personal film stars real-life couple Mark Webber and Teresa Palmer, and their son Bodhi Palmer. The film explores the unanswerable question "where do we go when we die?" posed by three-year-old Bohdi and takes them on an imaginative adventure that explores how we cope with dying, and the love, laughter, and pain we can find within it. The original title of this was Freeka Reeka Sheeka Deeka and the Big Battle in the Forest, which is kind of awesome, but it makes sense for them to choose something different. With his feature directorial debut Elizabeth Blue, writer/director Vincent Sabella tackles mental illness — specifically schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression and anxiety — all of which Sabella grapples with personally.
The film tells the story of Elizabeth (played by Anna Schafer), who recently got released from a mental institution and is now planning her wedding. With the love and support of her fiance, Grant (Ryan Vincent), and the help of her new and determined psychiatrist (Suicide Squad's Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Elizabeth is doing her best to maintain a normal life.

It’s highly disconcerting yet unsurprising that many Baby Boomers now in their sixties and seventies still see mental illness as a weakness. Talk about the scenarios that young people of today face and they dismiss them as a generational thing, a liberalization of society wherein strength and stoicism have been replaced by laziness and excuses. Try and tell them that very viewpoint is what stigmatized psychological ailments for so long and they scoff. It’s easier for them to believe nothing was wrong in their day than to admit the silence was a product of cultural oppression. The former hails them as tough Americans who never lost themselves. The latter colors them as unwitting villains bullying those in need, a label their systemic disregard for complex truths deems slander.

A palpable authenticity permeates Vincent Sabella’s debut feature about a young woman suffering from schizophrenia. The director/co-screenwriter, who suffers from the condition himself, based the film on his own experiences when his medications failed to work. His portrait of the title character of Elizabeth Blue thus feels all too real in terms of depicting her suffering and confusion.
Unfortunately, that in itself doesn’t make it a fully successful film. Despite Anna Schafer’s gripping performance in the lead role, this deeply personal effort is too narratively sluggish to sustain attention.

Coming form a weary gambler, trust me when I say Giles Borg’s Flutter misses far too many beats. You won’t feel the gut-wrenching loneliness of a debilitating bad beat, nor the euphoric high of cashing in on a big win. True gamblers are in it for the sheer thrill of lady luck’s unreadable fate, yet Stephen Leslie’s screenplay remains relatively tame in the face of high stakes and higher rewards. This is a thriller based on compulsive betting, yet it feels about as dangerous as a game of truth or dare, even with human souls on the line. Blame that on strangely sluggish pacing, unequal wagers, and silly terms of acceptance, but no matter what angle you take on this suspenseless thriller, you’re bound to turn up a loser.

This weekend’s onslaught of smaller new films will have awards contenders and big names to jostle with at the box office. Awards hopefuls Foxcatcher and The Homesman begin their theatrical runs in limited New York and L.A. rollouts, with the former a likely winner in the first weekend when the numbers come in Sunday. The films from Sony Pictures Classics and Roadside Attractions, respectively, tell particularly American stories, though from very different eras. The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart took time off in 2013 to work on his directorial debut. Open Road’s Rosewater, starring Gael García Bernal, will begin its theatrical rollout this weekend. It will be the biggest opener of this weekend’s cadre of specialty newcomers, playing in several hundred locations in the U.S. and Canada. Actor Chris Lowell also makes his filmmaking launch with Beside Still Waters. The project had smooth sailing until it came time for distribution,...

Directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh recently directed "Act of Valor" and are now set to team with Arnold Schwarzenegger for the "Unknown Soldier" action film. Meanwhile, their production company has been working on a sci-fi movie, called "The Prototype," for which the trailer just leaked online. The film has been in the works under the radar, so not much is known about it, except that it revolves around a half-man, half-machine on the run from the government. It's directed by Andrew Will, and stars Neal McDonough (Captain America: The First Avenger), Joseph Mawle (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and Anna Anissimova. "The Prototype" is expected to be released sometime next year. Check out the trailer below. Trailer:...

After a decent hit with Act Of Valor earlier this year, the production house known as The Bandito Brothers is at it again, this time with the sci-fi actioner Prototype. Written and directed by Andrew Will, the film stars Neal McDonough, Joseph Mawle, and Anna Anissimova. The pic centers on a rogue humanoid-robot being hunted by the government and has a very videogame-like feel to it, which isn't necesarily a bad thing. Take a look: This shows a lot of promise and could...

Bandito Brothers, the production company behind Act of Valor, are back next year with an entirely different project, The Prototype, that’s more in the vein of District 9 – a film with a modest $30m. budget that went on to take north of $200m. across the globe, and became an instant cult phenomenon.
The first teaser trailer has been leaked online, by its writer/director Andrew Will, with Deadline reporting that it was initially to be sold after the 4th July holiday in the States.
This first look at the film is utterly immense, and you can definitely imagine that distributors will be wanting this in their armoury for release in 2013.
The film has an under $40m. budget, and if it gets the right release, you can imagine that the success District 9 found could well follow for it.

Chicago – I have a sneaking suspicion that if The Weinstein Company had acquired this film and released it during the 2011 awards season, Rachel Weisz would currently be an Oscar nominee. After playing an assortment of vulnerable, photogenic damsels throughout her career, Weisz delivers her most potent and compelling work to date in Larysa Kondracki’s fact-based thriller.
Though the actress has won an Oscar before, it was for her rather thankless role in Fernando Meirelles’s downbeat drama, “The Constant Gardener.” “The Whistleblower” functions as a smart follow-up to Alejandro Amenábar’s equally overlooked 2009 gem, “Agora,” in which Weisz played another strong-willed rebel who risked everything in pursuit of the truth. Both Hypatia in “Agora” and Kathryn Bolkovac in “The Whistleblower” are empowering figures with unsettling life stories that hit all too close to home.

Title: Father of Invention Director: Trent Cooper Starring: Kevin Spacey, Heather Graham, Camilla Belle, Johnny Knoxville, Virginia Madsen, Craig Robinson, John Stamos, Michael Rosenbaum, Anna Anissimova If one could entirely banish certain ideas for scenes from the minds of all screenwriters, then surely near the top of the list for such cinematic excommunication would be press conference confessionals, which at some point must have seemed really bold and original but by now almost without fail come across as lazy and pat — an entirely synthetic way to give an audience the feeling of a character-awakening conclusion without any of the heavy lifting that accompanies honest reflection. Such is the dispiriting end...

Title: The Whistleblower Director: Larysa Kondracki Starring: Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Anna Anissimova, Roxana Condurache, Monica Bellucci, Vanessa Redgrave A powerhouse drama set against the backdrop of a very complicated and muddied story, The Whistleblower is one of those dramas that induce wearied sighs, furrowed brows and worried thoughts about the default state of human nature. Inspired by actual events, it’s both a crusading cop investigatory thriller and a sort of surrogate, gender-politic struggle-for-equality tale loosely in the vein of North Country. The story centers around Kathy Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), a tough and exceedingly competent Nebraskan police officer who – facing a divorce, denied a job transfer and wanting...

Title: The Whistleblower Directed By: Larysa Kondracki Written By: Eilis Kirwan, Larysa Kondracki Cast: Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn, Nikolaj Lie Kaas , Anna Anissimova Raya, Roxana Condurache, Monica Bellucci, Vanessa Redgrave Screened at: Review 1, NYC, 7/21/11 Opens: August 5, 2011 It takes a special kind of courage to be a whistleblower. You will probably be ostracized by your colleagues, you may be fired on a technicality, and you could even be killed. In a broad sense, Larysa Kondracki’s film, “The Whistleblower,” can be torn from today’s headlines. Sean Hoare, a journalist who blew the whistle on Rupert Murdock’s “News of the World” tabloid hackings, was found dead in his...
