A man is stuck in a car in the freezing Colorado mountains with no mobile signal – and violent intent brewing
If this UK-Canadian thriller has a wind-hardened snowcrust of malice, it’s somewhat less dense under the surface – though still an enjoyable punt from the digital-release ranks. Amiable but downtrodden waitress Ana (Nina Bergman) has her bacon saved by chance diner David (Allen Leech) when her abusive husband Vincent (Yan Tual) comes calling. Eerily calm in the face of having his dessert desecrated and a potential shanking, David drives off unharmed. But, redneck to the core, Vincent tailgates him; skidding into a snow drift, David is stuck in the Colorado Rockies in a -40C blizzard with, of course, no mobile reception.

Restoration wit William Congreve opined that music had charms to soothe the savage breast, but in “The Sonata,” it has power to summon the savage beast — you know, the one usually depicted with horns, tail, and a pitchfork. This handsome horror meller set primarily in France benefits considerably from location shooting in cheaper, but picturesque Latvia. It’s Looks 10, Personality 4, however, as director Andrew Desmond and collaborator Arthur Morin’s screenplay doesn’t quite provide enough incident to properly milk its own premise, making for a supernatural thriller that ends just as it’s beginning to work up a sweat.

An intriguing blend of macabre music and gothic atmosphere, The Sonata was one of my favorite films from this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival. Ahead of its January 10th release from Screen Media, we've been provided with an exclusive clip to share with Daily Dead readers.
You can watch a music expert bring a sinister score to life in our exclusive clip below, and keep an eye out for The Sonata when Screen Media releases it in theaters and on VOD beginning January 10th.
Directed by Andrew Desmond, The Sonata stars Freya Tingley, Rutger Hauer, Simon Abkarian, and James Faulkner:
Synopsis: "After being informed of the sudden death of her long lost composer father (Rutger Hauer), a young virtuoso violinist Rose (Freya Tingley) inherits an old mansion in which he used to live. There, she discovers her father’s final work: a mysterious music score marked with strange symbols.

The Sonata is a mysterious thriller, from director Andrew Desmond (Galaxy of Horrors). The film blends the occult with music as one woman inherits a massive estate. Inside the mansion, Rose discovers an incomplete composition, which could summon the Anti-Christ. In one of Rutger Hauer's final roles, The Sonata also stars: Freya Tingley (No Way to Live) as the protagonist, along with: Simon Abkarian and James Faulkner. Filmed in Latvia, the film's first trailer is available here, ahead of an impending U.S. theatrical release. Desmond has spoken a bit about this film. At Eye for Film, the director mentions the Gothic influences: "Gothic horror is one of the most visual genres around...it was important for me to create a dark, elegant and moody atmosphere to bathe the story and its characters in." Some of that Gothic horror can be seen in the setting, the Cesvaine Palace. Desmond...

The early months of the year have turned into a bit of a dumping ground for movies that are best forgotten but once in a while one comes along that surpasses expectation. Though I don't expect that The Sonata will be breaking any records, I do hope that it at least does right by Rutger Hauer.
Freya Tingley stars as Rose Fisher, a talented violinist whose estranged father, a talented composer named Richard Marlowe, Hauer in one of his final roles, dies suddenly, leaving her everything. Among his belongings is a sonata that contains symbols Rose has never seen before. Horror is afoot!

"If the notes are played with exactly the right pitch, they could conjure and seduce the antichrist." Screen Media has unveiled an official trailer for indie horror-thriller The Sonata, which premiered at numerous genre film festivals last year - including Fantasporto, Fantafestival, and FrightFest. The film stars Australian actress Freya Tingley as a young virtuoso violinist who inherits her long lost composer father's old mansion. When she arrives to there, she discovers a mysterious music score marked with strange symbols, triggering dark forces that reach beyond her imagination. This is a pretty cool concept: a horror movie in which playing music unleashes dark forces. The cast includes (the late) Rutger Hauer, plus Simon Abkarian, and James Faulkner. This definitely looks creepy and cool - I'm curious. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Andrew Desmond's The Sonata, from Screen Media's YouTube: After being informed of the death of her...

Arri Media International has acquired international distribution rights to Andrei Konchalovsky’s Michelangelo biopic “Il Peccato” (“Sin”), which will have its world premiere as a Special Closing Event at the 14th Rome Film Festival (Oct. 17-27).
Written by Konchalovsky and Elena Kiseleva, the film is set in Florence in the 16th century and follows Michelangelo through “the agonies and ecstasy of his own creative genius, as two rival noble factions compete for his loyalty,” according to Arri.
Although widely considered a genius by his contemporaries, Michelangelo, played by Alberto Testone (“Suburra”), is reduced to poverty and depleted by his struggle to finish the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When his commissioner and head of the Della Rovere nobility Pope Julius II dies, Michelangelo becomes obsessed with sourcing the finest marble to complete his tomb.

Screen Media has picked up all North American rights to “The Sonata,” a thriller that features one of the late actor Rutger Hauer’s final film roles.
“The Sonata” centers on young violinist Rose (Freya Tingley) who inherits an old mansion after the death of her composer father (Hauer). After moving in, she discovers that his final work was a mysterious musical score with strange symbols that unlock keys to her father’s shadowy past, unleashing a horror beyond imagination. Screen Media is planning a theatrical and VOD release in early 2020.

Screening at this year's Frightfest, Andrew Desmond's handsome occult thriller The Sonata made quite an impression. It's the story of young violinist Rose (played by Freya Tingley) who learns that her estranged father, a famous composer who spent his later years in obscurity, has passed away, leaving her his mansion in France. Visiting with the intention of selling the property, she discovers that that's not all he's left her - there's a piece of music there, apparently waiting for her, which just might be a work of genius. To decipher it, however, she has to follow a series of clues which gradually lead her - and her manager Charles - into very dark places. It's a remarkably polished feature début and I asked Andrew what led him to take on something so ambitious in the first place.

Freya Tingley will play the lead in first-time Us director Ali Presley Paras’ mystery-thriller Year of the Detectives, which starts shooting in Los Angeles this month.
The Aussie actor describes her character Nic O’Connell, a recently discharged Army veteran, as “like a grenade with the pin pulled: she’s tomboyish, tough and not afraid of a fight.”
O’Connell jointly inherits her grandfather’s private detective agency in the heart of Chinatown. She must set aside her differences with her co-inheritor (True Grit’s Paul Rae) to solve the mystery of her grandparents’ deaths as bodies pile up.

Much like Dread Central’s Zombieworld, which brought together a number of short films under one banner to create an all-new anthology film, Galaxy of Horrors is a selection of eight shorts, curated from Rue Morgue and Unstable Ground’s Little Terrors Festival by Toronto film programmer Justin McConnell, all wrapped up in the story of a man trapped in a damaged cryogenic pod.
This wraparound segment that sees and astronaut awoken from his cryogenic slimber too soon and forced to watch a series of shorts while the power supply drains away Becasue he’s watching these shorts… Yes, for our astronaut the terror-filled tales are terrifying not only because of their content but because they’re literlly killing him! Of the short films the astronaut (and we the audience) watch there are a number of standouts: Iris, directed by Richard Karpala, which tells the story of a siri-like phone assistant with a conscience when her owner, an assassin, does not. It’s a great take on how technology and humans interact and how far that realtionship with technology could, possibly (more likely imporbably), go.
Pathos, directed by Fabio Prati, Dennis Cabella and Marcello Ercole, is a foreign-language entry which is easily the best – and most memorable (it’s the one short that vividly stuck in my mind waaay after I’d finished watching the film) and tells the story of a future where citizens must pay -literally – to be alive and experience a “life” outside of the odd chamber in which our protagonist’s “exists” – yes his reality, his very existence, is all in his head! This short is yet another look at how humans and technology interact, in this case taking the ideas of alternate realities and how humanity perceives reality, borne out of the likes of The Matrix, to their logical and more importantly, horrific extreme.
Special mention must also go to Antonio Padovan‘s short Eveless, which sees men try to keep the worlds population going without women; and Benni Diez and Marinko Spahic‘s kinetic action/horror hybrid Kingz – which recalls the best of horror anthology V/H/S whilst staying true to its own badass terror-filled ethos.
Whilst the eight shorts tell very different stories, there is a common thread running between them – they’re all damn good films! Unlike a alot of anthologies that have one or two dud amongst their number, each and every short in Galaxy of Horrors hits it out of the park: all eight tales having interesting sci-fi stories to tell and cool concepts to portray. Plus it’s nice to see sci-fi horror in the spotlight once more…
Galaxy of Horrors is out now on DVD from StudioCanal.

It was back in March of 2014 that we first caught wind of Andrew Desmond's scifi short film Entity, a picture that was just out on its festival run at the time and winning raves wherever it went. Well, that fest run went on a long, long time and netted Desmond a good fistful of awards in the process, and with things all wrapped up in the festival world they are now making the short available for free online for one week only.Minutes after a technical failure of her spacecraft, an astronaut finds herself ejected from her cockpit and into space. She tries to contact the base to obtain help... But in vain.Check it out below!...

Just beginning what will surely be a long and successful festival run, Andrew Desmond's Entity is one seriously ambitious - and from the looks of the trailer, seriously gorgeous - scifi short. Alias Hilsum plays an astronaut ejected into space when her craft fails and what she finds ... well, the trailer doesn't tell you what, but there's definitely something. Check it out below....
