For the six Emmy contenders on our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel, there is no one set starting point in their creative processes. “It definitely depends on the project,” “Euphoria” costume designer Heidi Bivens says during our group discussion with Sharon Long (“The Great”), Donna Zakowska (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Zaldy (“RuPaul’s Drag Race“), Christine Bieselin Clark (“Star Trek: Picard”) and Laura Montgomery (“What We Do in the Shadows”). “If it’s contemporary, I like to do a lot of people-watching and definitely get ideas from real-life characters. It’s just so specific to the project.”
When she joined “Euphoria,” Bivens did a lot of people-watching outside high schools, waiting for when school would get out to see what kids were wearing. She also turned to where kids really live these days: social media. “I can do a deep dive and go down that wormhole of social media, so...

RuPaul and costume designer Zaldy go back 30 years and never once have they ever disagreed on any look. Seriously. “We’ve never had a disagreement ever in our life,” Zaldy tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “We’re so in sync and aligned that it’s really more like a surprise of, like, ‘Oh, my God! I can’t wait to wear this thing that doesn’t define my waist!'”
A three-time Emmy winner, Zaldy has designed Ru’s costumes for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and all of its spin-offs. Because of their long relationship, the two are “telepathic” with one another and Ru trusts that Zaldy will always deliver. “We have this deep, deep, deep trust in what we want to do each season. Gabriele Binder was “so happy to be part of this group” that we assembled for our “Meet the Btl Experts” panel of Emmy-contending costume designers, who joined us to discuss their work, inspirations, challenges, and more. Binder is nominated for Best Period Costumes for “The Queen’s Gambit,” while Dayna Pink (“Lovecraft Country”) and Christopher Hargadon (“The Umbrella Academy”) vie for Best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and Zaldy (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) hopes to win a juried award for Best Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program. The four artists represent “absolutely different imaginations, different universes.” Watch our group discussion above, and watch each person’s individual chat by clicking on each name.
“You’re kind of born with it, and you carry it through your life, and it is kind of an honor that other people recognize it, especially nowadays,” Hargadon adds about working in costume design. And it’s not just a craft.

After last year when the Covid-19 pandemic forced “RuPaul’s Drag Race” to hold a Zoom finale, costume designer Zaldy thought, “Oh my God, please, please … let us get near a stage” for season 13. He got his wish, and now he could win his fourth Emmy for Best Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program. We talked to Zaldy as part of our “Meet the Btl Experts” panel of Emmy-nominated costume designers. Watch our interview above.
Zaldy isn’t technically a nominee, though, since his category was changed to a juried award this year. That means the entrants’ submitted episodes will be evaluated by a panel of peer judges, which could lead to multiple prizes being bestowed in the category. “Drag Race” entered its April 23 “Grand Finale” episode in which (Spoiler Alert) Symone was named the winner, edging out runner-up Kandy Muse.

David Petruschin is known to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” fans as Raven. The fan favorite competed in both Season 2 and “All Stars” Season 1 and has been working as RuPaul’s makeup artist for the past five years. Last year pushed Petruschin to work under new conditions when production resumed on “Drag Race” U.K, U.S and a new iteration, “Down Under,” amid the Covid-19 pandemic. He had to pivot to making up the queen of drag with new safety protocols in place, and he earned this third consecutive variety, nonfiction or reality program makeup Emmy nom in the process. (He won last year.)
How did you go from being a contestant on “Drag Race” to RuPaul’s makeup artist?
In 2016, I was asked to come and do Ru’s makeup. Up until then, I had only seen RuPaul in drag when the whole monster was done. I never thought I would see the inner workings.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” is still years away from tying “The Amazing Race’s” record of 10 Best Competition Program Emmy wins, but it can draw level with another show this year. The three-time champ is one victory away from matching “The Voice” as the second most honored show in the category.
“The Voice” nabbed the Emmy in 2013 and then three in a row from 2015-17. Since then, “Drag Race” has triumphed the last three years. Along with “The Amazing Race,” which won the first seven years of the category’s existence from 2003-09 and then 2011-12 and 2014, they are the only shows that have won the category more than once. “Top Chef” is the only other winner, taking the prize and ending “The Amazing Race’s” streak in 2010. With no set timeline as to when the government-ordered Covid-19 quarantine will lift, more and more people are facing the reality of spending weeks — if not months — at home. But experts say staying in could actually be good thing, not only for your health, but for your mental muscles as well.
“This is a critical time to maintain your edge,” says Jen Mattiola, an La-based mindset and leadership coach for entrepreneurs and executives. “Crisis often presents an opportunity to create a competitive advantage, improve your business, or fix important issues with the company.

All good things come to an end and that includes Season 18 of Bravo’s “Project Runway.” Gold Derby editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna dissect the events that occurred on “Finale Part 1,” when the last four designers standing — Victoria Cocieru, Sergio Guadarrama, Geoffrey Mac and Nancy Volpe-Beringer — each showed three outfits from their collections to the judges with mixed results.
Daniel, ever the optimist, has a feeling that all four will likely get to take part in New York Fashion Week and show their collections. “Emmy needs a cyster!” Nick Murray jokes gleefully, referencing one of the viral moments he helped bring to the masses. The director of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is Emmy nominated for the second year in a row for Best Reality Director, after winning the category last year. This time, he is nominated for the Season 11 premiere, ‘Whatcha Unpackin?’ The episode features glam looks from RuPaul, an undercover Miley Cyrus, and an awkward yet endearing elimination. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“It’s always unfortunate that we have to start losing people, even on the first episode,” admits Murray. On Season 11, that unlucky first eliminated queen was Soju, who complained in hilariously grotesque detail about a painful cyst. Thus, #cysters became a defining a moment for the season and united the queens.
