Shuffling past the beach trash cans lined with ads for Toy Story 4 (opening June 21), it was hard to avoid an idle thought: How long before the Producers Guild of America comes up with a spin-off to its annual Los Angeles and New York “Produced By” conferences, “Reproduced By”?
Under way this weekend on the Warner Bros. lot, the 2019 Los Angeles Produced By conference is loaded with panels on subjects like streaming, social impact entertainment, and the new age of horror. But it seems a little light on a topic that should be front and center for contemporary movie producers. That is, how to be successfully derivative.
David Gross, a marketing consultant who monitors sequels, remakes, reboots and other forms of cinematic repetition through his Franchise Entertainment Research firm (located on the Web at FranchiseRe.biz), has firmly documented the establishment of the film franchise era. By his count, franchise...

The biggest deal to emerge during the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) came together before the event started, which says a lot about the acquisitions scene these days.
Distributors need no reminding of the treacherous terrain they occupy. Too many films continue to compete for a slice of the North American box office in a traditionally theatrical manner, only to fall short of expectations in an increasingly fractured marketplace bloated with consumer choice.
Buyers invest early in the best prospects and so Focus Features took worldwide rights off the table to Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming 1950s London haute couture drama to star Daniel Day-Lewis in a deal reportedly valued at $35m.
CAA handled that one on behalf of the filmmakers. Similarly, Wme Global and Good Universe touted an action-thriller package called Kin ahead of the festival and Lionsgate pounced on worldwide rights for what was understood to be in the mid-to-high $20m range.

She’s signed on to star in and produce an adaptation of Jenny Mollen‘s novel Live Fast Die Hot according to Variety, which is not a cross-over spin-off on the Die Hard and Fast & Furious series.
In fact, it is a collection of personal essays from the author that delve into adulthood, responsibility, and proving that you can travel alone without ending up in a Taken-esque scenario. Mollen herself has a particular set of skills as a writer and actress who lives in New York, who has appeared in films such as Crazy, Stupid, Love and TV episodes on Wilfred and Girls. The adaptation is in association with Warner Bros and one can check back for more details.

2011's R-rated raunchy-sports-comedy-with-a-heart-of-gold Goon is the latest comedy to be getting a sequel. And while law of averages are not in its favor when it comes to comedy sequels, Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber and Alison Pill are all set to return and throw around hockey pucks as much as they do certain four-letter words in Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Joining them inside the ice rink, however, is Elisha Cuthbert. The "24" and Girl Next Door star joins the movie to play Pill's outlandish sister. Pill plays Eva, the love interest to rising hockey star Doug "The Thug" Glatt (Scott). This new movie finds Doug and his team, Halifax Highlanders, working with a variety of new players during a pro lockout. So it looks like Cutherbert isn't the only newbie in the Goon universe, and with production to begin on June 21 in Toronto under producers David Gross, Jesse Shapira and Jeff Arkuss,...

Now this is good news. THR is reporting that the sequel to Goon, the awesome cult hockey movie starring Seann William Scott, will be directed by actor Jay Baruchel, making his directorial debut with this film. Baruchel is a major proponent behind the entire film, as he's co-writing the screenplay with Jesse Chabot, and also starring again as Seann William Scott's character's friend Pat. Of course they've got Seann William Scott back as violent hockey player Doug "The Thug" Glatt and they're already gearing up to start filming in June in Toronto. I've got a good feeling about this, it all sounds quite promising, especially with Baruchel. It was also revealed the title of this follow-up is Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Bring on the hockey fights. The film will be produced by David Gross, Jesse Shapira, and Jeff Arkuss of No Trace Camping and André Rouleau of Caramel Films.

Joan Allen, William H Macy and Jacob Tremblay have been added to the cast of Room, Element Pictures and No Trace Camping’s adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s 2010 bestseller that Lenny Abrahamson is directing. Brie Larson stars in the pic, for which A24 acquired U.S. right at Cannes this year. Shooting is underway at Pinewood Studios and on location in Toronto.
Larson stars as Ma, a woman kidnapped as a teenager who has been held captive for years in a tiny room where she lives with her 5-year-old son Jack. To the boy, it’s the only home he’s ever known. But as Jack’s curiosity is building alongside Ma’s own desperation, she knows that room cannot contain either indefinitely. Donoghue adapted the script from her book, itself partially inspired by the case of Austrian woman Elisabeth Fritzl, who escaped from a basement in 2008 after a 24-year...

What If gives a slightly different spin on romantic comedies, and more importantly, it gives Zoe Kazan a chance to get the exposure she deserves.
More than just your typical rom-com, What If spins the “friendship” question into new nooks and crannies of the relationship world, and does so from the perspective of some excessively quirky characters. Daniel Radcliffe, who to me has had varying levels of success attempting a wide array of characters, looks to have this role nailed down… possibly because there is a bit of Harry Potter about Wallace.
The new clip below expands on the “friendship bargain” you get in the trailer above, and is a pretty clever moment for the film.
Check it out, and make sure you have August 8th on your calendar.

“In Production” is a regular column which focuses on notable independent films that are currently shooting.
Daniel Radcliffe is stuck in the friend zone in Michael Dowse’s The F Word. Resuming his post-Harry Potter career, Radcliffe stars alongside Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks) in this romantic comedy about a young man who meets the love of his life only to discover that she is already spoken for — not the most uncommon circumstance. The cast also includes Rafe Spall (Prometheus), Megan Park (ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager) and the terrific Adam Driver (HBO’s Girls). Written by Elan Mastai (The Samaritan), The F Word is currently filming in Toronto, Canada, with David Gross (The Goon) producing and Entertainment One overseeing the project.

Daniel Radcliffe received a huge vote of confidence from Entertainment One Films Tuesday when the company picked up worldwide rights to the actor’s next film, “The F Word.” Perhaps reacting to the recent success of “The Woman in Black,” which grossed a surprising $128 million globally earlier this year, the company is banking on Radcliffe’s continued post-Harry Potter appeal around the world. eOne is only distributing “The F Word” in the U.K. and Canada; UTA and Jamie Feldman will sell U.S. rights. eOne will sell rights in the rest of the world. A romantic comedy, “The F Word” stars Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan as young people who have an immediate connection when they meet at a party but are forced into a friendship dynamic because of her long-term relationship with another guy. “Goon” director Mike Dowse is helming from Elan Mastai’s original screenplay. David Gross is producing and Jesse Shapira is.

Baruchel is Glatt's best friend. Pill plays the female lead...
Alison Pill and Marc-Andre Grondin are jumping onto the ice for the movie, which begins shooting in Winnipeg mid-October with Michael Dowse behind the camera.
Baruchel and Evan Goldberg, the frequent collaborator of Seth Rogen, wrote the script, inspired by the book "Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey" written by Doug Smith and Adam Frattasio.
Baruchel is also a producer on the project, which is being produced by Dcp Productions' Don Carmody along with David Gross and Jesse Shapira.
"Goon" centers on Doug Glatt, a bouncer (Scott) who has been touched by the fist of God. Upon discovering both his right hook and skates, he joins a downtrodden hockey team and inspires them into new heights.
