In one of the first high-profile sexual assault cases in Latin America following the #MeToo reckoning, Chilean director Nicolás López, who was renowned for his raunchy box office comedy hits “Sin Filtro,” “No Estoy Loca” and the “Que Pena” trilogy, has been sentenced to five years and one day in prison for two cases of sexual abuse.
The charges against López first surfaced in 2018, when several actresses came forward to accuse him of rape and sexual abuse. The court dismissed the charges of rape, but found López guilty of the latter charge.
López has also been banned from coming near his accusers and is permanently disqualified from running for public office. He’s expected to file an appeal on May 20.
During these past five years, López’s production company, Sobras, stopped operating and producing content.

After being accused of sexual harassment, Chilean filmmaker Nicolas Lopez has stepped down from his post at his production company Sobras.
Eight actresses and models including Josefina Montane, Lucy Cominetti, Andrea Velasco and Maria Vidaurre have accused Lopez of unsolicited kissing, requests that women inappropriately touch him, and other sexual misconduct. In the YouTube video below, Lopez announces his departure from the company he started 12 years ago.
In the video, which is in Spanish, Lopez said he does not want his private life to affect his collaborators, actors and production team. He adds that he is the only one responsible for his actions and that no one else deserves to be intimidated.
Lopez, who has collaborated with director Eli Roth on genre thrillers Aftershock and Knock Knock, addressed the allegations on his Instagram account, which has been set to private. Translated from Spanish, he wrote, “I don’t understand what...

In the wake of recent sexual and workplace harassment allegations against Chile’s biggest box office hitmaker, Nicolas Lopez, Netflix has placed its relationship with the filmmaker “under review.”
“Netflix has licensed several of Nicolás López films in the past and we have an agreement for one of his new projects, which is now currently under review,” it stated. Netflix was slated to release a new Lopez film under wraps next year.
At least eight actresses and models, among them Josefina Montané, Lucy Cominetti, Andrea Velasco and María Vidaurre, have come forward with damning allegations of sexual harassment against Lopez.
In an Instagram post, Lopez said: “I don’t understand what is happening nor the break in my years-long relationships of trust and affection. If I sometimes have been misunderstood, I apologize. But I’m not a stalker nor an abuser.”

Eventually, though, Javier becomes bored and breaks up with Sofia -- he instantly regrets that decision. Most of writer-director Nicolás López's Fuck My Life takes place after their break up, as Javier alternates between moping pathetically and pathetically attempting to win Sofia back. Throughout his emotional roller coaster, Javier's best friend since childhood, Angela (Andrea Velasco), serves as his sole support; she also has a keen knack for telling him the truth, no matter how brutally honest it is. Breaking up with someone is hard enough without the whole world knowing about it. It was only a few years ago that this kind of public humiliation was reserved for celebrities and those famous enough to warrant magazine covers. But now, thanks to online social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter, anyone can be immediately lauded or harpooned in front of anyone with an Internet connection.

One of the nicer surprises of SXSW this year was discovering that the movie 'F*** My Life' ('Que Pena Tu Vida'), despite the title, was a downright sweet and practically adorable romantic comedy. Chilean writer/director Nicolas Lopez's previous film was a comic-book superhero film, 'Santos,' and this is quite different in story but with the same light touch.
Javier (Ariel Levy) is a young advertising professional whose best friend since childhood is Angela. They text each other almost continually, asking for advice and support ... or in Angela's case, cracking wise. Javier falls for Sofia (Lucy Cominetti), a lovely singer, and while the beginning of their relationship is a bit rocky, they have two years of bliss until he feels stifled and breaks up. He regrets this almost immediately, so most of the story is about his attempts to win her back,...

What’s in a name?
Apparently, when it comes to the latest film from writer/director Nicolas Lopez, it means a lot.
Entitled Que Pena Tu Vida (Fuck My Life, or Fml from here on out), this marks the third film for Spanish director Lopez, and is his take on one of the most maligned and pastiched genres around: the romantic comedy.
Drawing seemingly direct inspiration from Marc Webb’s fantastic 500 Days Of Summer, Fml follows a couple as they meet, fall in love, break up, and move on in today’s social landscape. Told through a series of flashbacks connected through interviews with the characters, the film is very much a direct descendant of many modern anti-romantic comedies/dramas, and is ultimately a welcome addition to this otherwise stale genre.
Ultimately, the film’s biggest star is its sense of humor. Based on a script by Lopez and script “advisor” Guillermo Amoedo,...

Hollywoodnews.com: We have a little bit of time to process the extensive South By Southwest film line up, which was unveiled by festival programmers earlier this week. This year’s event, scheduled to take over beautiful Austin, Texas from March 11 to 19, will showcase 130 features including 60 world premieres, 12 North American premieres and 16 U.S. premieres.
“SXSW prides itself on taking chances, sifting for films that are the seedlings of the next generation of must-see artists,” said Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson. “This year’s line up is full of emerging voices and filmmakers who transcended the resources they had on hand, often with an alchemist’s touch.”
As we prepare to bring you exclusive coverage from Austin, I went ahead and singled out the 15 films I’m most looking forward to seeing while in town. The descriptions were provided by the SXSW press team,...

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...
