Brillante Mendoza, Best Director laureate from the Cannes Film Festival, dropped his latest film, “Pula,” quietly on Netflix earlier this month. The film marks one of the two reunion projects between Mendoza and actor Coco Martin years after their last collaboration in “Kinatay” (2009). This small-town crime thriller seems to bridge more than just the two figures.

The film navigates a fictionalized version of the small town of Pola depicted as a devout catholic fishing community where citizens live far from the town center and from each other. The title of the film is a wordplay of several layers. The first layer is the word “pula” being the literal translation of the color “red” associated with the red tide plaguing the town's fishing industry at the brink of a typhoon. Singer Brian McKnight‘s ex-wife and estranged children are speaking out after McKnight called them a product of sin.” The comments came from a video McKnight shared to his Instagram about getting rid of negativity, “even if that evil and negativity is related [to you],” McKnight stated.
One of McKnight’s biological children, Niko McKnight, wrote on social media, “I’m evil. That’s wild. The guy who used to make me clean his used condoms out his bathroom at 15 before Lisa got home is calling me evil.”
Niko went on to discuss his father and siblings further. He acknowledged that he and his siblings were “bad children,” but his sisters “deserved better.”
We saved that man from federal prison. That’s all I’m going to say. But after all of this, I still love him so much because I know there’s my dad in there somewhere. But he’s a drone now.

Joseph Quinn‘s busy film slate gets even busier. Deadline reports that one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars adds another upcoming movie to his roster: an untitled war pic from A24, with Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza co-directing. No word on if this is a sequel to Garland’s “Civil War,” which hits theaters on April 12, but Mendoza was military supervisor on that film, so there could be a connection.

A24 is planning to give Civil War, the latest film from Alex Garland, the director of Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, and Men, a theatrical release on April 12th – but before that movie makes its way out into the world, A24 and Garland are already moving forward with another, currently untitled war movie. A couple weeks ago, it was announced that Charles Melton – whose credits include May December, Heart of Champions, Secret Headquarters, American Horror Stories, Poker Face, History of the World: Part II, and Riverdale – had signed on to star in the film. Now Deadline has broken the news that Melton is being joined in the cast by Joseph Quinn!
Quinn has over a decade of credits to his name, with roles in Dickensian, Game of Thrones, Howards End, Overlord, Les Misérables, and Catherine the Great, among others, but it was when he played fan favorite character Eddie Munson on...

Exclusive: Even after landing one of the highly-coveted roles in Marvel’s new Fantastic Four movie, Joseph Quinn isn’t done setting up a very robust film slate as sources tell Deadline he is in talks to join A24’s new untitled war pic that Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland are co-directing. Charles Melton is also on board to star.
A24 had no comment.
The project is the second collaboration for Garland and Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Garland’s latest film Civil War set for release April 12. Besides co-directing, the pair also co-wrote the script.
Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Peter Rice will produce. A24 will handle the global release of the film. As with any Garland project, details behind what the film is about are being shrouded in secrecy.

With Civil War set for release this spring, Alex Garland is to direct again, this time an ‘untitled war movie’. More here.
In the summer of 2022, when he was promoting his pretty unforgettable horror Men, Alex Garland was giving the impression of a man done with directing movies. He’s credited with directing Ex Machina and Annihilation and was reported to have finished up 2012’s Dredd. Then, following Men, he launched straight into making Civil War, which is due for release in April.
However, if he was looking to step away from the director’s chair, it sounds as if the plan is at the very least on hold: according to Deadline, he’s just signed up to another project.
It’s going by the codename ‘Untitled War Movie’, and from that, I’m going to hazard a guess that it’s a war film, for which these is not yet a name.

In a holiday gift for royal watchers, Meghan Markle made her return to acting in an ad for a coffee company. The surprise ad dropped late in the evening of De. 19 and features Meghan prominently throughout. However, fans were not impressed. They called the ad “cringey” and referred to Meghan leaving the royal family behind for a small commercial role, claiming “how the mighty have fallen.”
Meghan Markle is back in front of the cameras in Clevr’s new coffee ad
The ad depicts how the busy holiday season has taken hold of Clevr’s staff. The coffee company boasts brews that are sans caffeine, sugar, and dairy and adds brain-boosting, mood-lifting ingredients to teas and lattes.
Meghan Markle plays the role of an intern who can be seen stacking boxes and brewing coffee. She is also seen working in the company’s digital department.
“Damn, you’re keeping us Busy right now!

Co-winner of Locarno's video competition, Brillante Mendoza's feature debut was a testament to what was about to follow, although truth is, this film seems even more daring than his next ones.
20-year-old Iliac works at a gay massage/prostitution parlor in order to support his family after his father left them. As the movie begins, his father has just died, and the young man has to return to his hometown to take care of the funeral rituals along with his mother, Naty, who does not seem to care that her husband has previously abandoned them. In the parlor, he may not be the most asked-for employee but just the previous night, he ended up “servicing” a romance novelist, who had a real impact on him, in contrast to his girlfriend, who seems distant.
Mendoza creates an intriguing narrative which is essentially a constant montage between the events in the parlor and the funeral proceedings,...

Repeating the blissfully perfect, pure ode to pleasure that is Magic Mike Xxl would be a fool’s errand, so nearly a decade later––with Steven Soderbergh back in the director’s chair–cinema’s finest stripper-verse is closing out on a more gentle, familiar, innocuous note. Hewing, unexpectedly, closer to a family film at its heart, Magic Mike’s Last Dance offers a more generalized message of the power of dance to engender community. This reliance on plot––and specifically this plot––rings a touch disappointing when considering the franchise’s bolder peaks. But thanks to a couple of memorable set-pieces, this final outing is still sexier than anything the likes of 50 Shades of Grey or Sam Levinson could ever dream up.

Season three of "La Reina del Sur" is finally here, and it's been a long time coming. The Telemundo series has been in the works for over a decade, and it stars Kate del Castillo as Teresa Mendoza, an unlikely cartel queenpin who rises through the ranks of the drug-smuggling world with nothing but her grit and street smarts. This season will show Mendoza in a way we've never seen her, as a spy and as a mother desperately trying to reunite with her daughter, Sofia. For 60 episodes, viewers will follow Mendoza's dangerous adventures through Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, and Mexico as part of her new mission to end her life as a fugitive once and for all. "The whole story is growing and maturing in so many ways," del Castillo tells Popsugar. "You're going to see a Teresa Mendoza that we all love but more [of a] warrior. She's a warrior,...

Paul Thompson, a prosecutor in the Los Angeles County D.A.’s sex crimes unit, is leading the case against Harvey Weinstein, which got underway on Monday morning.
But Thompson was not initially assigned to the case. The case was originally given to Lowrie Mendoza, a deputy district attorney who has prosecuted sex crimes for the last 14 years.
She and her boss, Christina Buckley, were both removed from the case in 2019 out of concern that they had been told of a confidential email between Weinstein and his defense lawyer, according to court declarations reviewed by Variety. An LAPD detective, Javier Vargas, was also removed from the case because he read the attorney-client email, according to the declarations.
Removing them would eliminate the possibility that an appeals court would later overturn a conviction due to that issue.

Updated with video, 7:55 Am: The attorneys for Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who is being investigated by the Santa Fe Sheriff’s department in the wake of Dp Halyna Hutchins’ death from a prop gun discharged by Alec Baldwin, told NBC’s Today this morning that they’re looking into whether a live bullet was placed in a box of dummy rounds with the intent of “sabotaging the set.”
“I believe that somebody who would do that would want to sabotage the set, want to prove a point, want to say that they’re disgruntled, they’re unhappy,” Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney Jason Bowles told Today. “And we know that people had walked off the set the day before.” He did not specifically naming the cameramen who quit the set over complaints about housing accommodations.
Bowles added, “I think you can’t rule anybody out at this point.”

The Rust First Assistant Director who admitted he didn’t properly check the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins last month is now calling on the film industry to make sure “no one is harmed through the creative process again.”
Speaking publicly for the first time since the fatal shooting by star-producer Alec Baldwin on the low-budget Western’s New Mexico set, David Halls has been named by Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza as one of the “two other people that handled and or inspected the loaded gun prior to Baldwin firing the weapon.” The other individual is armorer Hannah Gutierrez.
Hutchins died during a rehearsal at the Bonanza Creek Ranch after being struck by what now have been called “live rounds” from the 1880s-era weapon Baldwin was practicing a “quick draw” move.

Lawyering up with a former Assistant U.S. Attorney after being called out in public by Santa Fe’s sheriff, the Rust armorer at the center of the tragic accident that saw cinematographer Halyna Hutchins fatally shot has spoken out for the first time.
Disputing tales of after-hours target practice with weapons used for the film, Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez’s lawyers on Thursday also confirmed that two weapons were accidentally discharged on the troubled Bonanza Creek Ranch set of Rust before the accident October 21
“Safety is Hannah’s number on priority on set,” said attorneys Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence in a statement released late tonight. “Ultimately this set would never have been compromised if live ammo were not introduced. Hannah has no idea where the live rounds came from.”
“Hannah still, to this day, has never had an accidental discharge,” her lawyers claim in their statement tonight.
