“So You Think You Can Dance” season 18 advanced to the top 10 this week, but it surprised its contestants by revealing that most of the competition would take place outside of the studio in scenarios meant to reflect a real career in dance. The first challenge was to perform in a music video. Five of the contestants performed to a reimagined version of Justin Bieber‘s “All Around Me” video, choreographed by Phillip and Makenzie Chbeeb. Watch it above.
Roman Nevinchanyi, Jaylin Sanders, Avery Gay, Braylon Browner and Dakayla Wilson were randomly selected for this contemporary number, with ballroom dancer Nevinchanyi and hip-hop dancer Sanders stepping the most out of their comfort zones. But they all had to stretch their capabilities for a routine that involved complicated prop work using a ladder. There were some mishaps during rehearsals, with Browner getting banged up a bit and Phillip Chbeeb saying to the struggling contestants,...

Maddie Ziegler has been absolutely thriving since her early days on Dance Moms, and the 16-year-old dancer just mesmerized us all again with her incredible dancing and acting skills. In a hauntingly beautiful video shared to her Instagram account on Monday, Maddie and hip-hop dancer Phillip Chbeeb delivered a dance routine reminiscent of Sia's "Elastic Heart" video where she transformed into a full-on rag doll (if rag dolls had the most amazing dance moves ever). How does she do that?!
Maddie really pushed herself out of her comfort zone with this new routine, set to the tune of Kaleo's "Can't Go on Without You," and proved that her skills have only gotten better as the years have gone by. "I've been a fan of @phillipchbeeb for a long time so I was so excited to dive in!

I’m not gonna lie to you: I went into tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance Top 6 performance episode with my mind made up.
Rudy and Tanisha got robbed last week. Valerie had no business being in the Top 6. For justice to prevail, the Season 11 crown could only end up in one spot: Atop Ricky’s artistically dazzling head.

And then, just like that, a rowdy, randy wedding dance, a mind-bending Rorschach test and a brief blast of a favorite 1980 hit made me rethink everything — and I...

As we count the minutes until Eliana Girard or Tiffany Maher and Cyrus "Glitch" Spencer or Chehon Wespi-Tschopp are crowned "America's Favorite Dancer" on tonight's season finale of "So You Think You Can Dance," we thought it might be nice to pass the time in style.
And, by style, we mean all kinds of dance styles in all kinds of movies.
Some of our favorite all-stars and other "Sytycd" contestants have landed on the big screen over the years, and we're sure hoping some of the Season 9 gang will soon join them.
Seeing as Season 6 finalist Kathryn McCormick recently starred in the fourth installment of the "Step Up" franchise (alongside Stephen "tWitch" Boss and Phillip Chbeeb, natch), now seemed as good a time as any to take a look at how some of our favorite "Sytycd" stars are blowing up Hollywood. Seeing Legacy eliminated this week after the phenomenal Travis Wall "War of the Roses/Mr. & Mrs. Smith" piece he performed with Ellenore? And Mollee axed too, though she had one of the finest performance shows of the season this Tuesday?
Well, it proves that America is not always voting based on merit.
But as judge Adam Shankman points out in the clip below, the votes probably weren't votes against Legacy and Mollee, just more in support of married couple Ryan and Ashleigh.
After Ashleigh's untimely injury and Ryan's romantic plea to vote for her, the tide clearly turned their way.
So Legacy and Mollee are out of crown contention, but as you'll see in their clip, they couldn't be more proud of the Top 6 and seem to be in great spirits regardless.
One thing they may be bummed about, however, is that they're now ineligible for this year's special prize,...

Though Nathan raised his "So You Think You Can Dance" game this week -- as the judges suspected he might if paired with someone a bit more mature -- and though Noelle killed it in her partnership with Ryan -- really enjoyed the Nappy Tabs hip hop, clearly inspired by Mandy Moore's season 3 boardroom routine as well as Shane Sparks' season 3 Make It Work (did anyone else notice that?!) -- it just wasn't enough to keep them on the show.
But, as you'll see in the clips below, everyone's feeling cool about it. Nigel thinks America ultimately made the right decision. And Nathan and Noelle themselves seem perfectly content with how far they came in the competition.
And why shouldn't they be? Top 10? They're going on tour.
From this point forward, every week we'll be seeing two super talented dancers cut, but once you've made Top 10, you've pretty much won,...

Ah, Nigel Lythgoe.
One of the nice things about the "So You Think You Can Dance" judges -- Nigel in particular -- is they say what they think.
And this week, they sent contemporary dancer Victor Smalley home, but there was some debate as to whether Nathan Trasoras should've gone instead?
Why?
Well, Nigel says that while Nathan is a tremendous dancer, the kid simply needs to start engaging his brain.
He feels Victor's growth in the competition should've guaranteed him a spot in the Top 10 over Nathan. But judge Adam Shankman disagreed, saying now that we're in the finals and Nathan will be paired with someone new, he could begin to up his game. Adam said Nathan and Mollee's youth and similar style could've been the thing holding them back. Or not. Next week, we'll find out.

"So You Think You Can Dance" cut two more last night, dwindling the Top 20 to 12.
Certainly, it wasn't all that surprising to see Kevin/Karen and Channing/Victor in the bottom three, but the presence of Mollee and Nathan -- who fully redeemed themselves this Tuesday with a solid performance -- proves that the voting audience really does listen to what the judges say, as Nigel Lythgoe was quite critical of the two of them last week.
But, in the end, Mollee and Nathan had nothing to worry about, because the judges sent hip hop dancer Kevin Hunte and contemporary dancer Channing Cooke home. So why were they cut?
Nigel -- who hasn't been shy with his criticism of the "dance for your life" solos performed thus far -- ponders fan backlash as far as Nathan is concerned in his clip below, but he also shares his thoughts on the...

Last week, we shared a video with you of a few of your favorite Season 5 finalists chatting about their forthcoming So You Think You Can Dance tour. Today, Fox uploaded a video of the Top 12 talking tour. We get to catch up briefly with fan favorites Phillip Chbeeb, Janette Manrara, Brandon Bryant, and a few others. Sounds like there's already a war of the sexes brewing on tour, and it hasn't even started yet. Apparently the boys are so messy they need a butler for their bus, but the girls take care of their own chores!
To see more from your Top 12 and to hear about all the wonderful surprises and routines that await you on tour, check out the video below.

Did anyone see this one coming? Not until this week, I'm almost certain. For the first half of season five of "So You Think You Can Dance," Jeanine Mason, an 18-year-old contemporary dancer from Florida, was mostly known as the partner of pop-and-locking phenom Phillip Chbeeb. Sure, she's been a lively, funny and strong dancer the whole time — and managed to wow the judges with her hip-hop, tango and jive skills, long before picking her own style more than a month after the season began. That's when, finally, she and partner Jason Glover made jaws drop with a beautiful, sexy performance (complete with lip-lock), choreographed by season-two vet Travis Wall. She showed that she could turn off that quirky, 1,000-watt smile and embody whatever other emotion the dance called for.
Still, it looked like powerful Brandon Bryant or Kayla "White Lightning" "Beautiful Lines" Radomski could do no wrong.

So You Think You Can Dance kicked off Fox's TCA panels this morning with some Paula Abdul talk and - naturally - some dancing. Precious Cat Deeley introduced the popular routines from the season though the top four weren't able to come as they were busy getting ready for tonight's finale! Nigel Lythgoe continued to express how much he would love to have Paula Abdul on Dance, but also said he's not convinced she won't be back on American Idol. The Fox execs were up next and that was all about Paula, Paula, Paula - check out the big news from that here. After lunch the highly-anticipated Glee cast took the stage and Buzz has all the details of the panel. Joshua Jackson looked hot and brought out his sarcastic sense of humor promoting Fringe. He joked that Vancouver has "become Acapulco" weather-wise but that he "never expected to get...

Who: Judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, choreographers/guest judges Mia Michaels, Adam Shankman, host Cat Deeley, plus performances by Phillip Chbeeb, Jason Glover, Caitlin Kinney, Ade Obayomi, and Melissa Sandvig. Predictions: Questions about when (not if) Paula Abdul will join the judging panel. 9:01 am/Pst: Interesting that Fox slotted this panel before the exec session. Maybe they thought we'd get all the Paula Abdul questions out of our systems here and have nothing left for entertainment prez Kevin Reilly. As if! 9:04 am: Fox is once again trying to butter us up with free DVDs, coffee table books, and fattening snacks. Lots of fattening snacks. 9:18 am: With the live performance portion of the session out of the way, the panelists take to the stage and the Abdul question kicks things off. Lythgoe says he would "absolutely" be interested in having Abdul join Dance. "I don't know anybody who...

Usually, by this point in the season of "So You Think You Can Dance," there are at least two very clear favorites and then a few dark-horse dancers waiting in the wings. As far as I can remember, past winners Nick Lazzarini, Joshua Allen, Benji Schwimmer and Sabra Johnson won our hearts immediately with their surprisingly wide range of talent and adorable personalities. But when the top 10 performed this week, I was still absolutely stumped about who will win the title of "America's Favorite Dancer."
On the other hand, I can't be the only one who knew Hawaiian heartthrob Kupono Aweau and perky cutie Randi Evans were not long for this competition. Kupono's looks aside, he just doesn't match up in physical strength (witness the way he struggled through his lifts in this week's paso doble), and as Nigel Lythgoe said a few weeks ago, he...

Newly coupled dancers, Karla Garcia and Vitolio Jeune, have to swallow bitter pills of elimination when the judges of "So You Think You Can Dance" decided that it was time for them to go. Karla and Vitolio were in the bottom three along with the couples Kayla Radomski-Kupono Aweau and Jeanine Mason-Phillip Chbeeb.
During the solo effort to get a second chance, Karla danced to 'Blackbird' by Dionne Farris but Head Judge Nigel Lythgoe said the Jazz/Contemporary dancer did not ooze the star quality that they thought she possessed at the beginning. Meanwhile, Vitolio did a routine to "Here Comes Goodbye" by Rascal Flatts. Nigel said the Contemporary dancer offered nothing but his presence.

Full disclosure: I'm a rabid So You Think You Can Dance fan. Every summer for the past four years the talent on display on this show simply blows every other reality competition out of the water. So much so, that one can even overlook the nagging, hetero-cheerleading presence of producer Nigel Lythgoe on the judging panel.
Nigel's peculiar obsession with the masculinity of male dancers aside, Sytycd raises your standards when it comes to dance. I mean, once you start watching this show it is awfully hard to sit through an episode of Dancing with the Stars.
Sytycd is now in its fifth season, and every year we wonder if they can assemble dancers talented enough to stack up against previous season standouts such as Travis Wall, Danny Tidwell, Neil Haskell, and a host of others.
