Kvea and Kcet each won eight trophies at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards to lead the field just like they did at the nomination stage. Telemundo’s Kvea swept all three regularly scheduled newscast categories, morning, daytime and evening. CBS/KCAL9 followed with 4 wins, with ABC7 and Spectrum SportsNet LA tied at 3 and Kmex, Spectrum News 1 and Spectrum SportsNet at 2. The honored telecasts included two tributes to local icon Vin Scully who died last summer.

Kvea is clearly doing something right. The Telemundo-owned Los Angeles station, part of a duopoly with sister NBC outlet Knbc, swept this year’s key newscast categories at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. The Spanish language station dominated the evening, winning the Emmys for evening (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.), daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and morning (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.) newscasts.
Kvea had won the daytime newscast Emmy last year as well.
Overall, Kvea earned eight L.A. Area Emmy awards this year, tied with local public broadcaster Kcet. (That was also up from Kcet’s haul of six last year.) Given the tie with Kvea, that still preserves Kcet’s streak of this being the seventh year in a row that Kcet won the most.
The Kcbs/Kcal duopoly was next in line, with four wins, while ABC-owned Kabc and cabler Spectrum SportsNet LA were next with three.

Public broadcaster Kcet — part of a PBS duopoly with Koce “PBS SoCal” — is back on top at the Los Angeles Area Emmys. Thanks to locally produced series like “Artbound” and “Broken Bread,” Kcet dominated the L.A. area Emmy nominations, announced Tuesday, with 24.
That’s a return to the top spot among nominees, and up from 15 last year. Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1, which dominated last year’s Emmy nominations, was down to 14 this year (vs. 23 in 2022) — still good enough for third place.
Meanwhile, Telemundo outlet Kvea (part of a duopoly with NBC-owned Knbc) saw a huge surge as well, with 20 nominations — up from just 8 last year. That meant Kvea was not only tops with Spanish outlets, but it was also tops with all commercial broadcasters. That includes its sibling NBC4, just posted just two nominations.

Hey, "MasterChef" fans. Tonight, August 11, 2021, another new episode of MasterChef's current season 11 did indeed air after being delayed for the past two weeks. Judges: Gordon Ramsay, Aarón Sanchez, and Joe Bastianich were on hand along with a special, guest judge, which was legendary Roy Choi. Since Roy Choi specializes in serving up great street food, the contestants were tasked with taking a traditional street food item and making a restaurant quality dish out of it. They were given 60 minutes to do it. The contestant with the best dish won a dinner and immunity in the next elimination round. During the competition, Autumn mentioned that she was making a lobster dish. Lexy said she was making a cheese steak dish. Michael said he was cooking up a fish taco dish.

Like most shows on network television, “MasterChef” is in the middle of a two-week break as Fox doesn’t want to compete against NBC’s airing of the Tokyo Olympics. When we last checked in with our aspiring home cooks, the judges had just narrowed down the field to the Top 9. So when is “MasterChef” coming back? Mark your calendars for Wednesday, August 11 at 8:00 p.m as that’s when the next “Legends” episode, titled “Elevated Street Food,” will finally air.
Here is how Fox describes this ninth episode of Season 11: “The pioneering king of the food truck revolution, Roy Choi, tasks the home cooks with making a street food dish worthy of a Michelin star restaurant.”

Street food long has been a key part of Los Angeles culture, in the past decade or so manifesting in a boom of food trucks surrounding office buildings by day and spots like Venice’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard by night. Kogi’s Roy Choi often has been credited as a leader of the food truck revolution since launching his Korean-Mexican fusion operation in 2008; 12 years later, he has watched as the industry took a profound hit during the Covid-19 pandemic.

There’s something irresistible about an overhead shot of someone preparing food. It’s what’s powered thousands of social-ready clips touting adjective-filled recipe names, prepared by unseen cooks.
That angle, long a staple of food TV, is also found in Season 4 of “The Chef Show,” the Netflix cooking series co-hosted by acclaimed Los Angeles food fixture Roy Choi and writer/director Jon Favreau. Instead of building the show on artifice and impeccable presentation, Favreau and Choi continue to usher the viewer through a breezy set of kitchen basics, with these latest five episodes centering on the pair’s private setup and the various buzzy L.A. food venues.
It helps that these episodes don’t engage in any lengthy preambles about the chef in the spotlight. Over the previous three seasons, “The Chef Show” — with Choi’s imprimatur — has already built a reputation that whatever dish is on display is worth your time.

Selena Gomez and Blackpink know how to end the summer on a sweet note — by releasing their new single, “Ice Cream,” just before Labor Day. “It’s definitely a joyful thing. Being a part of it brought me joy,” Gomez, 28, says on Thursday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “It’s hopefully what everybody else will get from it too. I just want people to feel good. I have a 7-year-old sister, and just to see her dancing to it — she hasn’t been able to go to school, and just seeing how much fun it can be, it was such a highlight.”

Muppets Now continues to roll on with their third episode. In what’s supposed to be a modernized update of a beloved variety show is starting to fail when it comes to actual variety. The whole setup for Muppets Now hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been fairly sound. Four segments in the form of online shows are framed together thanks to quick bits of Scooter tossing them up online with his “Rainbow Connector.” Considering it’s the variety of characters, talents, and behaviors that make the Muppets work, this channel surfing style can definitely succeed if done correctly.
The problem is that after three episodes, they haven’t done too well in terms of mixing things up. For instance, the second episode brought back two segments from the first episode (the ones starring Miss Piggy and Swedish Chef) and that’s fine. It’s just that episode three...

When the Walt Disney Company purchased Jim Henson’s The Muppets in 2004 it seemed like a match made in heaven. Both companies connected with children and adults for decades, so what better opportunity than to bring them together?
That being said, since owning the Muppets, Disney hasn’t known what to do with them. Outside of two theatrical features — the last released six years ago to solid reviews and middling box office — and a short-lived sitcom with a convoluted backstory, the Muppets generally have been relegated to short features and commercial opportunities. The arrival of Disney+ left many fans believing the Muppets would finally get a chance to entertain families in a proper venue.
It wasn’t until last year’s D23 that audiences heard about how Disney planned to use the Muppets. The brief commercial for “Muppets Now” was vague, doing little more than announcing that something was coming...

Unto most every TV-watching generation, a new Muppets show is born. The original “Muppet Show,” which ran from 1976 to 1981, had Jim Henson’s felt puppets take over a vaudeville theater to perform songs, slapstick sketches and more unabashedly cheesy puns than its bewildered guests could count. The “Muppets Tonight” reboot, which ran a single season from 1997 to 1998, swapped the theater for a television studio, where the Muppets frantically threw together a variety show while letting the audience in on all the drama happening in the control booth. A sour 2015 follow-up (“The Muppets.”) tried for a “30 Rock” meets “The Office” vibe, imagining a world in which Miss Piggy had a late-night show and the rest had midlife crises. Whether tap dancing with rat puppets, trading quips with celebrities or exploring TV’s most enduring on-and-off relationship between Miss Piggy and Kermit, every iteration of “The Muppet Show” tries to mix...

Local public broadcaster Kcet was once again the major winner at this year’s Los Angeles Area Emmys, and then, when combined with its sister station Koce (“PBS SoCal”), the two outlets further dominated the awards. Kcet won eight Emmys this year, the most of any station, followed by Univision’s Kmex-tv, which won five. Telemundo’s Kvea won four, and then there was Koce, with three.
That means the combined Kcet/Koce won eight Emmys overall, easily leading all other stations and duopolies.
Kcet’s wins included L.A. Local Color, for “Transformation (Broken Bread),” as well as entertainment, for “Jazz City (SoCal Connected).” Other big winners included Knbc, for daytime newscast (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Kabc, for evening newscast (7 p.m. to midnight). Kmex and Kvea tied for morning news (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.).
