Dumpster diving may seem like a cringeworthy practice to some, but it's nonetheless gained popularity across the world. In Austria, it's inspired a recent reality television program, "Waste Cooking," in which impressive culinary feats are performed with food salvaged from waste bins.
On the show's website, director David Gross writes in German that he was shocked by the level of food waste he found on his first dive in January of 2012. NPR translates: "Although I was prepared for large amounts, the amount of waste left me speechless."
Many episodes of "Waste Cooking" begin with a group of bike-riding divers going off in search of trash cans marked for organic waste. (Austria has required separate collection of organic waste since 1995.)
They later present their finds to food blogger and cooking instructor Tobias Judmaier, who whips them up into tempting dishes in a kitchen set up in a pedestrian area. Passersby are encouraged to take a bite.

2012 wasn’t a bad year for movies. It was actually a great year. The problem is, the movies we were most anticipating, specifically the Hollywood blockbusters like Prometheus and The Hobbit, didn’t live up to our expectations. With that said I still managed to make a list of 50 films I loved. Maybe I just have bad taste or maybe I just love movies but the most time consuming factor when making this list was sitting down and deciding what makes the cut and what doesn’t. Even with 50 films listed below, I found it hard to not include movies like Frankenweenie, The Loneliest Planet, Footnote, Compliance, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, and Searching For Sugar Man. Come to think of it, every film featured on our list of best documentaries could have easily snuck into this list. I haven’t seen everything of course. Below is...

Brooke Satchwell has revealed that she has had very "dark" moments in her life. The 31-year-old former Neighbours actress, who recently joined the cast of family drama Packed to the Rafters, said that she considered giving up an acting career after she was allegedly attacked by former boyfriend Matthew Newton in 2006. Satchwell told the Herald Sun: "In darker moments in my life I have thought, 'I could go somewhere different and not do this job'. For sure, there have been periods when I felt like that because of all the attention [over Newton]. It's been a real frustration because the line has been blurred." The star said that she is now happy in a relationship with film editor David Gross, adding: "Dave and I had this (more)...

2012 promises to be a fantastic year in cinema. Not too long ago, we posted a list of thirty of our most anticipated films of 2012, and so I decided I would keep track of my favourite films released each month. Here are my five favourite films released in January.
#1- We Need To Talk About Kevin
Directed by Lynne Ramsay
UK
Hell best describes Lynne Ramsay’s latest feature, her first in nine years ever since her brilliant and much overlooked Morvern Callar. Many critics have criticized the film for the characters portrayal, but they seem to be missing the point. One would assume the movie is about its titular character, but the movie really isn’t about Kevin at all. We Need To Talk About Kevin is all about perception – in this case, in how Eva perceives the world, how she regards her son and how she views situations in her past.

The Opera House is hugely recognisable – but there are literally millions of people who visit it each year, who have never been to an actual performance there,” says Caroline David, producer of the Ship Song Project. Based upon Nick Cave’s “The Ship Song”, it is an online campaign that invited Australian and international musicians to pay homage to the theatre.
“The Opera House like all businesses needs to make money to survive, so the aim with this project was to de-mystify the House and make it accessible to everyone and in particular the youth market,” explains David, a producer at Exit Films. The film moves through both back and front of house, introducing performers such as Silverchair’s Daniel Johns, Kev Carmody, Sarah Blasko, Martha Wainwright, Sydney Symphony, The Temper Trap, The Australian Chamber Orchestra, and John Bell of Bell Shakespeare who all offered their time for free. On their scheduled shoot day,...
