Woof woof! If you put dogs (or a dog) in your short film, it's an absolute guarantee that I'll watch it. More dogs in cinema, the better! Peripheria is an animated short film (or rather it's an "illustrated" short film) made by French filmmaker David Coquard-Dassault. It originally premiered back in 2015, and won tons of awards including at the Annecy Film Festival and other fests. Now it's available online to watch for free - so you might as well give it a look. Peripheria is a much darker and contemplative short that seems to act as a metaphor for society and some of the problems plaguing our world. We follow various stray dogs as they run around various buildings. The filmmaker is "fascinated" by urban developments, and sets this film in a mesmerizing world of an abandoned housing project where the dogs roam wild. There isn't a clear narrative in this film,...

This year the Academy’s Short Films and Feature Animation branch has deemed eligible a record 70 animated shorts to vie for the shortlist of ten, followed by the final five nominations for the Oscar. That’s 10 more than last year’s 60.
The number of qualified shorts has been growing steadily, from 33 in 2010 to 58 in 2014.
Members of the branch who volunteer to serve will now view the shorts and rate the films. The ten best-rated shorts will go on the shortlist, to be revealed in November. A larger group will check those out and cull the final five which will be announced on Tuesday, January 24. The shorts will be sent to the entire Academy, who will vote on the winner.
Cartoon Brew got hold of the list of qualified contenders, and assesses what they consider to be the best of the best, including trailers. The Academy has not released that list.

Canada's National Film Board of Canada (Nfb) returns to the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, January 21 to 31 with three selected animated film shorts.
The films screening are Cordell Baker’s "Runaway", Bruce Alcock’s "Vive la Rose" and David Coquard-Dassault’s "Rains".
"Runaway" is Barker's third short film with the Nfb. His previous films "The Cat Came Back" (1988) and "Strange Invaders" (2001) won 30 international awards and Academy Award nominations. "Runaway" was produced in Winnipeg by Derek Mazur for the Nfb.
Bruce Alcock’s "Vive la Rose", puts into images the words of a plaintive song about lost love. Co-produced by the Nfb and Global Mechanic, Alcock’s film is based on an 18th-century song by Newfoundland musician Émile Benoit, in a film that pays homage to the land, sea and the harsh lives of local fishermen, produced by Global Mechanic’s Tina Ouellette and the Nfb’s Annette Clarke and Michael Fukushima.
