Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theaters closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that brink, the studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

“Shells play a central part of the murder mystery as a clue,” reveals Oscar and Emmy-winning composer Mychael Danna (“Life of Pi”) about turning to the distinctly ancient sounds elicited from the natural world. For our recent webchat he adds, “as many of us know, that’s one of the earliest instruments that human beings ever used blowing into shells,” he says. “It sounds primordial and ancient, which it is, as an instrument. It really sounds like the marsh. People have asked me, what is that? Is that a voice? Is it a woodwind? Is it a brass instrument? It’s a seashell being blown. That’s kind of cool that you don’t know what it is, but it feels like the marsh that you’re seeing.” We talked with Danna as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022/2023 awards contenders. Sony has revealed that 3000 Pictures’ “Where the Crawdads Sing” will open in China beginning Nov. 25, a rare booking for a Hollywood film as the nation has cut back on foreign releases.
The Reese Witherspoon-produced melodrama, about a young outcast who finds herself embroiled in a murder trial, has already earned 140.2 million worldwide. That is nearly six times its 24 million production budget in global theatrical revenue alone, so anything from China can be treated as glorified “found money.”
Based on Delia Owens’s bestselling novel, director Olivia Newman and writer Lucy Alibar’s period piece was notable last summer for being among the only mainstream theatrical releases from, for and about women. In a summer ruled by mavericks, minions, superheroes and space rangers, the Daisy Edgar-Jones vehicle opened with 17.25 million debut weekend in mid-July and legged out to 90.2 million domestic.

Sony Pictures’ Where the Crawdads Sing has crossed the 90 million mark at the domestic box office, showing proof that it’s not just tentpoles that rule the roost on the big screen. The pic hit the mark on its 82nd day of release, Tuesday, after opening on July 15.
The movie based on the Delia Owens YA mystery novel opened to 17.2M and has a current leg-out factor of 5.2x, which is amazing for any wide title in this wonky marketplace. And it wasn’t even the Christmas season. Sony has pulled off great box office sleepers before, one of the more notable titles pre-pandemic being Little Women, which posted a 5-day start of 29.2M and legged out to 108.1M domestic and six Oscar noms and a win.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” has gathered quite a list of names associated with the film adaptation of Delia Owens’ bestselling novel, which was published in 2018. Reese Witherspoon spotlighted the book as one of the earliest picks in her book club, and then her production company Hello Sunshine signed on to adapt the book for the big screen through Lucy Alibar’s screenplay.
Directed by Olivia Newman, the story weaves together several complex themes, including coming of age, survival and a murder mystery. Taylor Swift even wrote a song for the film after reading Owens’ novel because she was so inspired by the story: “Carolina,” which released June 23, echoes Owens’ naturalistic writing with a haunting melody.
Fans of the book, Reese Witherspoon, Taylor Swift and/or actress Daisy Edgar Jones may be wondering how to watch the upcoming film adaptation. We have all the details below.

In an encouraging sign for specialized product, Sony/3000 Pictures/Hello Sunshine’s Where the Crawdads Sing has crossed the 100M benchmark globally. Getting there on Tuesday, the feature adaptation of the Delia Owens novel sits at 78.8M domestic and 21.5M from the international box office.
Crawdads initially released domestically in mid-July with 17M; a good win for a 24M production before P&a, and ahead of other female-skewing novels on screen pre-pandemic. It also charmed audiences at 96 on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a critical score of 34.
The Daisy Edgar-Jones led movie is directed by Olivia Newman (First Match) from a screenplay by Lucy Alibar (Beasts Of The Southern Wild).
It’s on a staggered offshore release, still with Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Korea and Japan to come.
To date, the top overseas markets are the UK (8.6M), Australia (6.7M), Germany (1.3M), New Zealand (1M) and France (821K).

‘Normal People’ Star Daisy Edgar-Jones on ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ and the ‘Strangeness’ of Stardom
One of the breakout stars of the pandemic, Daisy Edgar-Jones, was finally out and about at Locarno Film Festival, where she picked up the Leopard Club Award and introduced her latest film “Where the Crawdads Sing,” based on a novel by Delia Owens.
“The whole idea of being a ‘breakout star’ is a strange thing to comprehend anyway. The strangeness of that, happening in tandem with the strangeness of the pandemic, meant that those things will be forever mixed up together for me,” she tells Variety, recalling “Normal People’s” triumphant unveiling during the lockdown.
“In reality, nothing in my life was changing. I was still in my bedroom on Zoom. This year, I have been all the more grateful for being able to promote the projects I worked on and actually be with the people I made them with.”

Daisy Edgar-Jones picked up Locarno’s Leopard Club acting award Friday evening — the latest honour of her short career. Despite her early success, however, Edgar-Jones says she’s keen to reshape her career and shake her perception in the industry.
“I play a lot of gentle and quiet nice people, but I’d like to play characters that are very different from me. I’d like to transform and pick characters that aren’t my obvious casting,” she told Deadline, adding that she’d like to try her hand as a villain.
Edgar-Jones — who accepted the award at the festival’s Piazza Square — is best known for her performance as Marianne in Normal People, Hulu’s popular series adaptation of Sally Rooney’s critically acclaimed, bestselling novel. Most recently, she starred in Sony’s Where the Crawdads Sing, which is also showing at Locarno.

Hopes were high for the big-screen adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing, the 2018 best-seller by Delia Owens set in the coastal marshland of North Carolina. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, produced by Reese Witherspoon (who also gave Owens' debut novel an incalculable boost by making it one of her book club selections) and featuring an original song by Taylor Swift, the movie headed to theaters July 15 with an impressive pedigree and a built-in fandom. But instead of all the twists taking place onscreen as the murder mystery ensnaring Crawdads' heroine heats up, a decades-old cold case linked to Delia and her ex-husband Mark Owens resurfaced in real life instead. Normal People star deserved a better Hollywood debut than this southern gothic schmaltzer and its outrageously evasive cheat ending
Daisy Edgar-Jones was a lockdown smash for her excellent performance in the BBC’s Sally Rooney adaptation Normal People, and she deserved better for her Hollywood debut than this uncompromisingly terrible southern gothic schmaltzer based on the humungous US bestseller by Delia Owens. It’s a relentless surge of solemnly ridiculous nonsense in the style of romdram maestro Nicholas Sparks (creator of The Notebook and Message in a Bottle) culminating in a courtroom trial with Edgar-Jones’s free-spirited heroine in the dock as the Manic Pixie Dream Girl Murder Suspect. Defending her is David Strathairn as the white-suited decent liberal lawyer and it is at this stage that this film plays like an all-white reboot of To Kill a Mockingbird with Edgar-Jones somehow getting to play Scout and Tom Robinson at the same time.

In "Where the Crawdads Sing," Daisy Edgar-Jones's Kya and Taylor John Smith's Tate spend a lot of time together in the marsh, helped by two small, old-fashioned motorboats. Did Edgar-Jones and Smith actually maneuver the boats themselves, though?

"I loved it," Edgar-Jones says of being in the boat. "We had a bit of time before we started filming.

“Everybody has a secret,” teases the promotional poster for Sony’s new film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars in the film as Kya, a young woman who as a child survived living alone in the unforgiving marshlands of North Carolina. Now an adult, she finds re-entry into human society complicated. Things complicate further when she’s accused of murder.
It’s an intriguing premise. But another intriguing secret the film studio really doesn’t want people talking about is the way Kya’s situation might mirror the troubling past of Crawdads’ author Delia Owens.
Several high-profile news articles and television shows that originally discussed Delia and her then-husband Mark Owens’ time in Zambia have resurfaced due to the heightened attention around the new film and the novel, which was published in 2018. The couple first came under international scrutiny in the wake of a 1996 episode of ABC...

By the end of filming “Where the Crawdads Sing,” actress Daisy Edgar-Jones’ co-star Taylor John Smith commented on how Jones’ book looked like it had been through a paper shredder.
Based on the best-selling novel by Delia Owens and adapted by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company and Sony’s 3000 Pictures, “Where the Crawdads Sing,” wraps the story of Kya (Edgar-Jones) in layers of a coming of age story as well as a murder mystery, chronicling the lessons Kya learns from nature along the way.
“Well yeah, I read and reread and reread and reread and reread that book,” Edgar-Jones told TheWrap following Smith’s comment. “It’s such a beautiful book and it’s so popular and loved by so many for a reason.”

Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” managed to fend off three new nationwide releases to remain the No. 1 movie in North America.
Though ticket sales for “Thor” cratered in its second weekend, falling by 68 to 46 million from 4,375 theaters, the latest installment in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe easily towered over a trio of newcomers: Sony’s literary adaptation “Where the Crawdads Sing,” Paramount’s animated “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” and the Focus Features period drama “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.” After 10 days on the big screen, “Love and Thunder” has generated a sizable 232 million at the domestic box office.
For “Thor,” the fourth superhero adventure to spotlight Chris Hemsworth as the Asgardian god with abs that won’t quit, a concerning 68 decline is signaling the movie is not breaking out beyond the comic book empire’s (still very robust) fanbase. Though “Love and Thunder” will certainly end...

Updated, Sunday Am writethru after Saturday Am update: The wearing down of the MCU luster is unfortunately being seen, as Disney’s Thor: Love and Thunder is having a great fall, with a -68 drop for a second weekend to 46M. And the sequel isn’t even theatrical day-and-date like Black Widow was last year on Disney+. While the Taika Waititi-directed movie improved beyond its high 130M opening estimates last weekend into the 144M range, it’s clear those sour audience exits of a B+ CinemaScore and 3 1/2 stars are taking their toll.
Thor‘s second weekend drop ranks among the MCU’s worst, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (-67) and Black Widow (-68). Forget about Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s -68 second drop. That’s largely due to Christmas falling on a Saturday, and everyone knows that Sony/MCU title was making money hand over fist on a daily basis.

Delia Owens has seen mainstream success as the author of "Where the Crawdads Sing," the hit book that's now a movie starring Daisy Edgar-Jones. However, all the new attention on the film has brought a complex and shocking story from Delia's past back into the spotlight. Years ago, Delia left Zambia, Africa, after being tied to a murder investigation. She is still currently wanted for questioning by the Zambian government.
Before she was a bestselling author, Delia and her husband, Mark Owens, were zoologists and conservationists based in Africa, originally in Botswana before moving to Zambia. While there, the couple became involved in an effort to stop elephant poachers. Mark, according to a piece published in The Atlantic in July, had "gradually come to command a corps of game scouts in North Luangwa, outside of Zambian-government oversight, by buying their loyalty through the provision of weapons, boots,...

“Where the Crawdads Sing” leveled up from its already high standing in the world of pop culture when singer/songwriter Taylor Swift announced that she had written a song that would be featured in the film adaptation. But what fans didn’t know was Swift wrote the song before production on the film had even begun.
The novel, written by Delia Owens, tells the story of a young girl named Kya who lives on her own undisturbed out in a marsh, until she becomes a suspect in a potential murder.
Swift wrote “Carolina” specifically for the new film, with momentum from her “folklore” album production, asking Aaron Dessner to produce it. She teased the single with the movie’s trailer on social media in March, writing “I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story.”

After an early summer jam packed with major franchise titles, things begin to slow down this weekend. Over the past two and a half months we hadTop Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, Lightyear, and Minions: The Rise of Gru all sandwiched in between two MCU films, but the current slate doesn’t have any franchise titles until October (Halloween Kills and Black Adam), and we may not see another 100+ million opening until November (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever). There are still some potentially big titles coming out over the rest of the summer, most notably the Jordan Peele directed Nope next weekend and the Brad Pitt starring Bullet Train on August 5th. However, there’s no doubt that the summer peaked early, and last weekend’s overall gross of 238 million, the year’s biggest thus far, won’t be topped at least until November. While there are no more summer tentpoles on the way,...

Sometimes, fiction parallels reality in the strangest ways. There are dozens of terrifying instances where sci-fi hits a little too close to home by accidentally predicting the future, though when it comes to speculative fiction and our basically dystopian reality, what else is new? But you probably don't expect the same kind of coincidence from, say, a coming-of-age murder mystery. And yet here we are, one day away from the release of 'Where The Crawdads Sing," a sordid murder trial with its own personal behind-the-scenes scandal.

Olivia Newman’s film based on the bestseller by Delia Owens tells the story of Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones), an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, she opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for both the film and the novel, “Where the Crawdads Sing.”]
With a simple plot attempting to harken back to the central court case of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Delia Owens’ 2018 novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” became a bestseller and caught the attention of mega-producer Reese Witherspoon, who scooped up the adaptation rights under her Hello Sunshine production banner.
“Where the Crawdads Sing” centers on Kya Clark, derisively referred to by her community as “Marsh Girl,” who was left to fend for herself along the North Carolina coast as a young girl. Upon becoming a teenager and being romantically involved with two men from town, Kya finds herself in the center of a murder trial in 1969 after one of her beaus is found dead following an attempted assault.
The Sony film, opening on July 15, stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as the (seemingly) wrongfully-accused Kya; the film is helmed by “First Match” director Olivia Newman with a script by “Beasts...

Taylor John Smith was excited when he was cast as Tate in "Where the Crawdads Sing," but that was nothing compared to how his sisters felt. "When I called and told my sisters about it, they've only ever freaked out about one thing, and it was this project," Smith tells Popsugar. "So I knew it was a big deal."
Smith and costar Daisy Edgar-Jones both really connected with the bestselling book by Delia Owens, which the movie is based on. "I read the book, and I fell in love with Kya, her story, the world, and the marsh. I think everyone who read it did," Edgar-Jones says. She felt like there were things about Kya that she'd never gotten to explore in a character before, especially "her strength and her resilience." Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder will continue its reign atop the weekend box office in its second session, with on the low-end an anticipated 65 decline or 50M from its 144M opening.
The movie is easily heading past 200M in the next three days, and yesterday grossed an estimated 13.6M for a running total that’s just under 170M.
Pic’s first Tuesday, thanks to summer traffic mid-week, is ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness by 8 which did 12.6M.
Thor 4‘s anticipated second weekend decline is in line with recent Marvel fare, i.e. Spider-Way: No Way Home (-67), Doctor Strange 2 (-67) and Eternals (-62).
Two smaller sized budget wide releases, Paramount/Nickelodeon’s animated Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank (45M production cost, 10M acquisition by the Melrose Ave. lot from Gfm Animation) and Sony/Hello Sunshine/3000 Picture’s 24M production Where the Crawdads Sing,...

Where the Crawdads Sing came out of nowhere four years ago to become one of the best-selling literary sensations of all time. Written by the hitherto little-known Delia Owens, who was 69 when the book was published in 2018, the novel about a little Southern swamp rat who had to contend with a fractured family, frightful destitution and an eventual trial for first-degree murder developed into a bestseller of astonishing proportions, topping the list for 32 weeks and spending 135 weeks on the list all-told.
Naturally, it became a hot property for the movies and ended up being produced by none other than that she’s-everywhere phenomenon named Reese Witherspoon, a southerner who might well have played the leading role herself had the book been around a quarter century ago. Unfortunately, this ripe-for-adaptation melodrama has been flattened, de-juiced and otherwise withered into a massively banal and flavorless porridge in which the two male leads,...

The Reese Witherspoon-produced adaptation of the best-seller remains faithful to the fantasies of the book, for better and mostly for worse
Where The Crawdads Sing, the bestselling book of 2019, presents a fantasy of grit and purity: a young white girl, abandoned by her family in the 1950s, learns to fend for herself in a North Carolina marsh, goes from illiterate to acclaimed scientific author without ever abandoning her communion with the land, and finds love as an outcast so suspicious the town assumes she killed her former lover. The debut novel by Delia Owens, a former scientist in her mid-70s known for years of controversial (and possibly violent) conservation work in Africa, offered a seductive blend of romance, murder mystery and feral coming-of-age that, along with a nod from Reese Witherspoon’s book club, helped sell over 12m copies to date.

Delia Owens, author of the novel “Where the Crawdads Sing,” the basis of a Reese Witherspoon movie opening this week, is wanted for questioning by Zambian authorities in the death of a man whose execution-style killing was caught by an ABC News documentary crew in 1996.
The revelation comes from a piece published Monday in The Atlantic written by Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg, whose exhaustive reporting and personal experience in the matter can be read in full here. The movie will be released by Sony this weekend.

Taylor Swift’s song “Carolina,” which she wrote specifically as the theme for “Where the Crawdads Sing,” will officially drop tonight — and we can’t wait to hear how she captures that haunting, misty marsh in which main character Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones) lives. Poor and surviving on her wits alone in the wilderness, her family having left her when she was young, Kya seems like the exact kind of hero Swift’s delicate songwriting can tap into. The confirmation comes via the artist’s Instagram stories, posted early Thursday morning.
The “Cardigan” singer first announced that she wrote “Carolina” for the upcoming film in March on Instagram, where she posted a clip of the trailer and a snippet of the single accompanying it.

They might be two of the coolest British actors around, but Daisy Edgar-Jones and Maisie Williams were just as amazed by the Met Gala as the rest of us. "It was totally bonkers, and because it was so unbelievable that I was there, I felt like I was slightly disassociated from the whole experience," Edgar-Jones revealed on the May 25 episode of the "Frank Film Club" podcast. "I was not really in my body; I was watching myself from afar. It was just mad."
Speaking on the podcast, which is hosted by "Game of Thrones" alum Williams, casting director Hannah Marie Williams, and filmmaker Lowri Roberts, the two actresses talk about how they tried to meet up but missed each other at the afterparties. "The Met Gala itself is so bizarre that you just get through it. And then the afterparties end up being kind of fun," explained Williams.

From the best-selling novel comes a captivating mystery. Where The Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh.
