Last summer, Washington Post “Fact-checker” columnist Glenn Kessler wrote that the Medicare for All plan favored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-vt) would cause “providers” to face an “immediate cut of 40 percent in their payments.” The piece was quickly amended to reflect that the cuts only referred to private insurance payments, leaving Medicare recipients untouched. A few days later, Kessler would repeat — and later correct again — the same error.
Now, Kessler is fact-checking another statement made by Sanders, this one about the financial crisis in South Carolina:

Ten years ago, on Saturday, September 13th, 2008, the world was about to end.
The New York Federal Reserve was a zoo. Imagine Nasa headquarters on the day a giant asteroid careens into the atmosphere. That was the New York Fed: all hands on deck, peak human panic.
The crowd included future Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, then-Treasury Secretary (and former Goldman Sachs CEO) Hank Paulson, the representatives of multiple regulatory offices, and the CEOs of virtually every major bank in New York, each toting armies of bean counters and bankers.
The asteroid metaphor fit.

At least half a dozen people have tried to kill Michael Moore. But the attempt that really stands out in his mind is the guy with the fertilizer bomb back in 2004. "He was going to plant it under my house in Michigan and blow it up," says Moore. "But one night he was cleaning his Ak-47 and it went off. Neighbors called the cops, and when they showed up he had all this ammo, bomb-making stuff and a hit list, with me at the top. He went to the federal penitentiary.

Gawker is being universally criticized for a story published Thursday about Condé Nast CFO David Geithner’s plans for a weekend rendezvous with a gay porn star in Chicago. Geithner, the brother of former United States Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner and married-to-a-woman father of three, allegedly sent a series of text messages to “Ryan,” a gay porn star, promising to pay $2,500 for three hours of his services, flight, and room at the Four Seasons. The website published a series of text messages between the two, as well as an image of mail sent to Ryan from Geithner with the first installment of.

CEO Joe Ripp doesn’t say in his memo to staffers today how many people will be affected by his effort to, as he put it, “right-size the organization” — although the total is expected to be in the hundreds. The job cuts are at least partly designed to make the company more attractive to Wall Street when Time Warner spins off its publishing arm, expected by mid-year. Its success “will depend on how investors view the momentum we are generating at the new Time Inc,” he says. That requires “some substantive and sometimes painful changes to the way we operate and approach our business.” Employees will learn “as early as today” who’s getting the ax. He unveiled plans to restructure the organization, ditching its three brand operating clusters. Evp and longtime Time Inc vet David Geithner – who’s former Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s brother, and runs the Style & Entertainment Group — will be out.

New York — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a favorite among liberals for her forceful advocacy for consumers and criticisms of the financial industry, has a book deal.
The Massachusetts Democrat has an agreement with Henry Holt and Company for a book, currently untitled, to be released in spring 2014, the publisher announced Wednesday.
Warren, a first-term senator elected last fall, will write about her childhood and early professional life, but the book will mostly be a "rousing call" for the middle class, according to Holt. She will describe her work on creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and her opposition to powerful interests in Washington and on Wall Street. She will also provide an insider's view of Congress.
"For decades, America's middle class has been chipped at, squeezed, and hammered," Warren, 63, said in a statement issued by Holt. "I am eager to tell the story about my experiences on the frontlines...

This story first appeared in the April 5 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. The most sought-after literary agent in America actually isn't an agent. He's Washington lawyer Robert Barnett. Since scoring Ronald Reagan budget director David Stockman a $2.4 million advance in 1985, Barnett, a noted Democratic player (he's worked on nine presidential campaigns, mostly doing debate prep), has built a thriving -- and bipartisan -- business negotiating book deals for presidents (Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton), first ladies (Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush), cabinet secretaries (Timothy Geithner) and political strategists (Karl Rove), plus the occasional royal (Queen

Wednesday's authorized leak that President Obama will nominate White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew to succeed Tim Geithner as Secretary of the Treasury means that the President has filled the three most powerful cabinet positions with white males. That fact seems to run counter to the President's victory over Mitt "Binders Full Of Women" Romney and the Republican War On Women, but in choosing Jack Lew, the President fulfilled his duty to select the person he felt was most qualified for the job. It is to the President's credit that he didn't feel the need to pick a woman just for the sake of picking a woman, because these posts are too important to select anyone but the most qualified person.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner appeared on CNBC’s Closing Bell on Wednesday where he put a finer point on the Obama administration’s negotiating position against Republicans as both sides seek to resolve the fiscal cliff before 2013. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner appeared on CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley on Sunday morning where he explained some of the details of President Barack Obama’s opening bid in the negotiations with Congressional Republicans to find a resolution to the upcoming fiscal cliff. Geithner said that, if Republicans refused to back off their insistence that tax rates not be increased, a deal was unlikely and the nation will go over the cliff.

Los Angeles — "Killing Them Softly" is a stylish and violent dark comedy about low-level gangsters and thugs, set squarely within the U.S. economic collapse of autumn 2008. In rather heavy-handed fashion, it suggests that the mob functions as a microcosm of American capitalism. Thankfully, Brad Pitt is there to keep it from going under.

President Barack Obama's 51st birthday is approaching, and the Republican National Committee is seizing the day to rally support with mocking cards.
The cards are featured on the Rnc-created site baracksbirthdaycards.com and feature images of notable Obama supporters like actor George Clooney, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). Each satirical card has a birthday wish that targets the president on issues like Solyndra, the unemployment rate and the national debt.
This isn't the first time the Rnc has mocked Obama on his birthday. In the past, the Rnc's mock cards have featured Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D), Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.
During a Thursday campaign stop in Florida, a crowd of supporters sang "Happy Birthday" to Obama. The president said his birthday wish was to obtain Florida's 29 electoral votes.

Everyone knows that not paying taxes can become a celebrity’s legacy. (Go with me on this.) When someone mentions Willie Nelson or Wesley Snipes, if you don’t automatically make a joke about weed or Passenger 57, the next easy go-to in your bag of Nelson-Snipes jokes is totally about tax evasion, I just know it. But stars who don’t abide by the tax code are such a common thing that it’s not that shocking anymore once you hear who’s been in hot water for it. Martha Stewart. Snoop Dogg. Val Kilmer. Teri Polo! Clearly she wasn’t reporting her income from being a Miss America judge. So sure, lots of celebs get in trouble for it, but haven’t we all wondered who the sexiest tax evaders are? We sure have: 12. Burt Reynolds This centerfold was no angel (see what I did there?), Burt...
