Documentarian Chris Wilcha is stepping back through time for his latest feature “Flipside.”
Wilcha revisits his own shelved past projects including capturing “This American Life” icon Ira Glass in the midst of a creative rebirth, an origin story of David Bowie’s ode to a local New Jersey cable television hero, and an unlikely connection between jazz photographer Herman Leonard and TV writer David Milch.
The film is the product of Wilcha returning to the record store where he worked as a teenager in New Jersey and realizing that the staple of his youth is now out of touch with the times. Per the official synopsis, “Flipside” documents Wilcha’s “tragicomic attempt to revive the store while revisiting other documentary projects he has abandoned over the years. This disparate collection of stories coheres into something strange and expansive — a moving meditation on music, work, and the sacrifices and satisfaction of...

Audible signed an exclusive, multiproject development deal with Plan B Entertainment, the production company led by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, for a slate of audio originals.
Under the worldwide deal — which represents Plan B’s entry into audio entertainment — the production company will create a slate of Audible originals. It’s the latest pact by Amazon-owned Audible with high-profile Hollywood talent to create exclusive audio productions.
Plan B’s inaugural project for Audible is “A Summer Love Thing” from cinematographer Bradford Young. Currently in active development, “A Summer Love Thing” follows a woman who leaves her successful singing career to return to her Southern hometown and pursue her first love, a blue-collar worker, for the second time. Plan B and Audible describe the project as “moody, lyrical and ethereal, as is all of Bradford’s work,” using “Southern soundscapes to evoke a place, space and time.”

An indie web series that premiered to critical acclaim in 2012 has returned with a second season. The Outs, Adam Goldman’s exploration of the life of a gay man in New York, has launched the first of its brand-new episodes through Vimeo On Demand.
The Outs first premiered in 2012 and quickly won fans thanks to Goldman’s assured direction, a handful of subtle-yet-strong acting performances, and a witty script. As it turned out, though, one of the best choices Goldman made was his decision to distribute his show through Vimeo. In 2015, as the video site searched for programs to include in its first full slate of original programming, it turned to Goldman. Almost six months later, season two of The Outs is here, and its picks up the story of Mitchell (play by Goldman) as he navigates his complex romantic life in the city.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Vimeo today announced its first-ever full slate of original programming, including "The Outs," the critically acclaimed web series from Adam Goldman and Sasha Winters. The first season of "The Outs" debuted on Vimeo in 2012 and Vimeo now will fund a second season of the web series about young gay life in New York City. Read More: HBO Gets Some 'High Maintenance' in Latest Win for Vimeo VOD Series Since Vimeo doesn't carry advertising, the investment in original material is intended to encourage more viewers to pay for content by renting or buying shows and movies from Vimeo on Demand and to drive creators to post content to the site as opposed to YouTube or other video platforms. Also on the new originals slate is "Darby Forever," an original short film from "Saturday Night Live" breakout cast member Aidy Bryant, which will star Bryant along with Lukas Jones, Retta...

In 2014, Vimeo announced that High Maintenance, a smoky web series regarded as one of the Internet’s best, would be the platform’s first ever original series. Vimeo agreed to finance six new episodes of High Maintenance and delivered on that promise a few months later.
Now, a year on from the start of its original programming experiment, Vimeo is taking a huge step forward. It has announced its first ever “slate” of originals, one that includes a new season of acclaimed indie series The Outs, a short film from Saturday Night Live cast member Aidy Bryant, and a stand-up special starring acerbic drag queen Bianca Del Rio.
The three projects in Vimeo’s new originals slate took very different paths to get there. The Outs, like High Maintenance, got its start as an exemplary indie web series (one that happened to use the Vimeo player). Creator Adam Goldman has helmed several well-received projects,...

From “Glee” to “Modern Family,” primetime television’s rooster of gay characters has become an increasingly full house as of late. So when Dylan Marron landed a role in “Whatever this is.,” the new Kickstarter-funded web series written and directed by Adam Goldman (“The Outs”), the actor wanted his portrayal of the openly gay Ari to not only be more nuanced, but also emblematic of different aspects of the community.
“Ari is exactly the type of gay character I would have liked to have seen on TV when I was growing up,” Marron, a 25-year-old New York City native and Wesleyan University alum, said in an interview with The Huffington Post. “I love seeing an out gay character who hasn’t figured it all out. He isn’t necessarily the sassiest … Ari not only feels flawed, but also a bit like he’s still under construction.”

Adam Goldman and the people behind the web series hit "The Outs" are back with their new series "Whatever This Is," which is currently 3 days away from the end of their ambitious $165K Kickstarter campaign. They debuted the series' first episode earlier this week. The project description, according to the project's Kickstarter campaign: 'Whatever this is.' follows Sam (Hunter Canning) and Ari (Dylan Marron), two production assistants in New York, and Lisa (Madeline Wise), Sam's girlfriend. Sam and Ari are scraping by working on low or unpaid video production gigs thrown their way by Oscar (Ross Hamman), an existentially grumpy middle-man at a small production company. Making rent is hard enough; they barely have time to sneak toward their personal goals and personal lives in their off-hours. Lisa is a teacher and therefore unemployed for the summer. A chance encounter puts her on the road to a possible summer job,...

Remember "The Outs?" The 2012 six-episode web series -- created and directed by Adam Goldman -- followed the tumultuous dissolution of a relationship between two gay men as they navigated the pressures and challenges of being 20-something in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The enormous success of the miniseries not only enabled Goldman to produce and release a "Chanukah Special" episode this past April, but also the launch of a new project featuring familiar faces from "The Outs," titled "Whatever this is."

When Netflix is a leading Emmy contender it looks like TV has been completely disrupted. Thanks to subscribers, Netflix is already HBO. It can pull together generously budgeted dramas, something most other networks like YouTube, who rely on advertisers, don't have the money to do. But as multiple critics and scholars have pointed out, Netflix's dominance in top categories overshadows the truly innovative work of short-format producers. The television Academy has honored web series for years but with minimal promotion. The bright young talents working in the indie-friendly format have been largely ignored by Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and the other big networks in their original programming strategies. Undeterred, indie TV creators, armed with critical cachet and devoted fans, are taking on bigger projects. Staying Indie While Raising Money for a Web Series Take Adam Goldman, creator of "The Outs," which I named one of the best web dramas...
