“The Resident” has ended with its sixth season, Fox revealed on Thursday.
The medical drama follows the doctors and nurses at Chastain Memorial Hospital as they face personal and professional challenges and fight for their patients’ health. The Resident is no more at Fox.
The network has canceled its medical drama after six seasons. The decision comes nearly three months after The Resident, produced by Disney’s 20th Television, finished its 13-episode sixth season.
Speculation about the show’s fate has swirled since the season — the shortest of the show’s six — ended. The Resident had its lowest-rated season to date among adults 18-49, averaging a 0.53 rating in the key ad demographic over seven days of viewing (versus 0.7 last season). According to Fox, the show’s cross-platform audience of 6.9 million viewers was down 12 percent from the 2021-22 season.
When The Resident premiered in January 2018, 20th TV was still part of the 21st Century Fox family that included the broadcast network. A month earlier, though, Fox and Disney had agreed to a $71 billion sale of the studio and several cable assets to Disney; that deal closed in 2019.

Our time with the docs at Chastain is officially over. Fox has canceled The Resident after six seasons. The news comes months after the Season 6 finale aired on January 17. Season 6 averaged a 0.5 L7 rating in Adults 18-49 (down 27 percent from a year ago) and 6.9 million total multiplatform viewers (down 12 percent). Compared to its first season in 2018, which ended up being its last (consisting of 13 episodes) was down 69 percent and 35 percent in the aforementioned rating and viewership. Because they didn’t know if they’d be renewed, Chapman and creator Amy Holden Jones crafted the last episode of Season 6 to serve as a series finale. “[We] really thought hard about how we would construct storylines that would give closure to the season, but if it had to be a series finale, would give our audience ...

In The Resident Season 6, before Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) and Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas) got together, both had other love interests: Dr. Cade Sullivan (Kaley Ronayne) and Dr. James Yamada (Ian Anthony Dale). But don’t feel too bad for them. After all, not only did James and Cade find something between them that is fun (and works!), but if the Fox medical drama is renewed for Season 7 — executive producer Andrew Chapman told TV Insider in January they didn’t expect to know until April or May — the hope is we see more of James. Dale looks back on joining the show in Season 6 and ahead to his hopes if it continues. You were a fantastic addition to the cast this season on The Resident and I hope there’s more and that we see more of you. Ian Anthony Dale: I had such a great time on that show.

The Resident‘s sixth season may have just ended, but we’re already looking ahead — if the Fox medical drama is renewed, that is. And not only could we “possibly” see a familiar face again, according to showrunner Andrew Chapman, but we almost did in Season 5. Morris Chestnut, who played neurosurgeon Dr. Barrett Cain in Seasons 3 and 4, could return if the series continues. “We love Morris, he certainly loves the show, and we’ve talked to him a bunch about coming back,” Chapman tells TV Insider. “We almost brought him in for a three or four-episode run in Season 5, but his timing was no good; he was on something else, and then this past season, we just didn’t have room for him. So possibly.” But what would we have seen in Season 5 if Cain had returned? “In an alternate universe, Billie’s [Jessica Lucas] son [Miles Fowler’s Trevor...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Resident Season 6 finale, “All Hands on Deck.”] If this is how The Resident goes out, it does so on a happy note. Among the highlights: Conrad (Matt Czuchry) and Billie (Jessica Lucas) say, “I love you.” The doctors save Bell’s (Bruce Greenwood) granddaughter Sammie and Governor Betz (Steven Culp) — and, therefore, the hospital (thanks to their deal). Bell is entering Devon’s (Manish Dayal) Ms trial. Devon proposes to Leela (Anuja Joshi), who becomes an attending. Showrunner Andrew Chapman explains why that felt like a series finale and shares what we could see if Season 7 is picked up. What can you say about a Season 7? Andrew Chapman: Fingers crossed. We just don’t know. I don’t think that Fox knows. I don’t think anybody really knows. They hold out the possibility, but they won’t pick us up yet. We probably won’t know until April or May.

The Resident didn’t just end its 2022 episodes with Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) and Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas) kissing. The Fox medical drama also set up quite a few storylines for the final three episodes of Season 6. There’s still the matter of Dr. Kit Voss’s (Jane Leeves) and Dr. Randolph Bell’s (Bruce Greenwood) fight against the governor (Steven Culp), who’s eager to slash the hospital’s budget and personally go after Bell for what he said in front of the press. There’s Padma (Aneesha Joshi), who was last seen standing on the edge of a bridge. Showrunner Andrew Chapman shares what to expect. Bell’s worried about his Ms progressing. Is it? Or is it just the stress? Andrew Chapman: That’s the thing — not to play both sides — that’s so interesting and complicated about Ms. Sometimes Ms progresses if you lead an entirely stress-free life.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Resident Season 6 Episode 10 “Family Day.”] There were more lows than highs in The Resident fall finale, which left us quite worried about a few characters. To recap, starting with the most harrowing: Billie (Jessica Lucas) is attacked by a patients’ sons after she dies following complications of a very risky surgery, but Conrad (Matt Czuchry) saves her. Padma (Aneesha Joshi) ends the episode standing on the edge of a bridge. Cade (Kaley Ronayne) isn’t sure whether to believe her father Ian (Andrew McCarthy) that he’ll make up to her what he’s done because of his addiction. And when Conrad brings Billie home at the end of the day, they kiss! Showrunner Andrew Chapman breaks down that ending and teases what’s ahead. Of course we have to start with that kiss. How did you decide when that would happen and how? Andrew Chapman: That is a complicated question.

On Oct. 25, Fox will air the 100th episode of The Resident, the episodic drama that celebrates the heroism and dysfunction present in the American medical system. But the show almost didn’t make it to air after being dropped by its developer Showtime and eventually rescued by a joint effort from Fox and 20th Television. Now a successful and beloved Tuesday night staple, it crosses the milestone once thought to signal inevitable syndication — and in the world of streaming disruption, the landmark episode serves as a reminder that network shows are still competing in a big way. To mark the occasion, executive producers Amy Holden Jones and Andrew Chapman spoke to THR about what it was like to get the series off the ground and what they’re most proud of.

Things are looking up for Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) and Dr. Cade Sullivan (Kaley Ronayne) on The Resident. In fact, as TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the October 18 episode shows, they might actually get to spend time together away from the hospital. Dr. Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy) forwarded an email from a mother thanking him for saving her baby to his daughter. “Modest as always,” Cade remarks. Conrad asks how things are going. Ian did pass the second drug test (though she doesn’t know how he did that) and is operating up a storm, so “fine, I guess,” Cade says. But in happier news, Cade’s finally off nights, which means… “You have room for one more tonight?” she asks. “Always,” Conrad tells her. But a patient in distress interrupts their conversation. Watch the clip above to see more. Conrad and Cade are going to have “a really intense,...

In addition to showing the realities of the supplies and healthcare workers it takes to treat “One Bullet” in the latest episode of The Resident, the Fox drama continued its ongoing storyline about doctors and addiction. After Cade (Kaley Ronayne) shared her concerns about her father Ian (Andrew McCarthy), Conrad (Matt Czuchry) went to Kit (Jane Leeves) about testing the staff, without naming names. Ian succeeded in tricking the test, though Cade was suspicious and Kit told him he had to take it again before operating again. And this did cause a strain in Cade’s relationship with Conrad. Showrunner Andrew Chapman, who wrote “One Bullet,” teases what’s next with Ian’s addiction as well as Conrad’s relationships with Cade and Billie (Jessica Lucas) and previews Kit and Bell’s (Bruce Greenwood) upcoming wedding. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Resident Season 6 Episode 3 “One Bullet.”] As the latest episode of The Resident shows, one bullet can cost a hospital — supplies, healthcare workers, and the other patients. Conrad (Matt Czuchry) and Cade (Kaley Ronayne), while out on another call, find a gunshot victim. The nearest hospital won’t take him, and so they have to go to Chastain. Once there, this patient uses up nearly all the hospital’s blood and is treated by 100 healthcare workers. And what’s worse: Padma (Aneesha Joshi) is there for her C-section, which gets pushed (due to necessary changes in the ORs’ schedule), until it becomes an emergency situation. Padma’s twin, Leela (Anuja Joshi), ends up saving her life. And just as Conrad and Nurse Hundley (Denitra Isler) are heading out at the end of the episode, another gunshot victim comes in, for it to start all over. Showrunner Andrew Chapman, who wrote the episode,...

Considering Dr. Cade Sullivan (Kaley Ronayne) is in the middle of a love triangle and her father, Dr. Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy), isn’t going anywhere, it’s no surprise that she’s sticking around. Ronayne has been upped to series regular for The Resident Season 6, TVLine reports. So even if she doesn’t have a romantic future with Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), her personal life will probably be filled with enough conflict just from having her father now at Chastain full-time. Nathan Bolster/Fox “We love the soap between [Ian] and Cade, father and daughter working in the same hospital. We think that’s really fun and interesting,” showrunner Andrew Chapman told TV Insider after the Season 5 finale. “He plays the sort of narcissistic ambitious surgeon so well [and] we have little hints of character flaws. He’s had a disease, but he also has an issue with painkillers. There...

Exclusive: Peter Elkoff has joined newly ordered ABC/20th Television drama series Alaska, headlined by Hilary Swank, as executive producer and showrunner. For the past two seasons, the seasoned TV writer-producer served as executive producer and co-showrunner on another 20th TV drama series, Fox’s The Resident. Fellow exec producer/co-showrunner Andrew Chapman will be the sole showrunner for the medical drama’s upcoming sixth season.
Alaska, created by Spotlight filmmaker Tom McCarthy, who wrote and directed the pilot, emerged as an early front-runner at ABC this pilot season, making the search for a showrunner a big priority for the studio. With The Resident on the bubble as renewal negotiations between Fox and 20th TV went down to the wire, Elkoff was approached about Alaska and took the job with the 20th TV’s blessing.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Resident Season 5 finale “Neon Moon.”] Conrad (Matt Czuchry) is ready to move on after losing his wife, Nic (Emily VanCamp), and by the end of The Resident Season 5 finale, he’s made a choice between Billie (Jessica Lucas) and Cade (Kaley Ronayne). We just don’t know who. She makes him promise to do so, too. Elsewhere in the finale, Kit (Jane Leeves) and Bell (Bruce Greenwood) celebrate their engagement, Devon (Manish Dayal) and Leela (Anuja Joshi) get back together, and Padma (Aneesha Joshi) finds out she and Aj (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) are having twins. Spoiler Alert: The following story reveals major plot points from the Season 5 finale of Fox’s The Resident.
Emily VanCamp made her return to Fox’s The Resident in the Season 5 finale tonight and while it was exciting to see Nic Nevin and Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) reunited, alas, it was only in flashbacks.
Conrad has been struggling with moving on romantically after losing the love of his life and the mother of his daughter, but memories could help him overcome some of that anxiety.
Throughout the episode, Conrad revisits the good ol’ days with Nic often getting lost in thought. While at a stoplight in the car with their daughter Gigi, he smiles as he snapped out of a daydream about a particular date with Nic.
He may never find the magic he did with Nic but he can surely love again and move on with his life, as she would want him to.

Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) hasn’t been the only one in need of closure since losing his wife, Nic (Emily VanCamp), after a car accident early this season. VanCamp returns for flashbacks that will “give the audience the thing they’ve been yearning for,” promises The Resident executive producer Andrew Chapman. Throughout the moving Season 5 finale, Conrad has recurring memories of Nic — specifically a night shortly after their daughter Gigi was born — and “desperately” tries to figure out their meaning. “It’s the heart of the whole episode, and, in a way, the entire season. It’s about dealing with grief and life moving forward,” Chapman says. As Conrad makes a decision about his future, so will others at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital, leading to multiple big reveals at a party celebrating the engagement of Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) and Chastain CEO Kit Voss (Jane Leeves). So is it time for Conrad to start dating someone else, perhaps even semi-seriously? While Conrad did seem interested in Marion (Ana Mackenzie) — whom he met while she was looking after his daughter GiGi in daycare — it didn’t seem like either was looking for that to become anything serious during their conversation in bed in the winter finale. “We all need physical contact and we all want what we want,” executive producer Andrew Chapman previously told TV Insider. “He’s dipping his toe into the water, so to speak,” he continued. “Having a little moment with Marion is moving forward, and we’ll see where that goes.

The Resident executive producer Andrew Chapman can’t currently say whether Billie Sutton has romantic feelings for Conrad Hawkins. But let him put it this way: If she were to develop a crush on him during Season 5, he wouldn’t blame her.
“Everybody loves Conrad. He’s a lovable guy, he’s heartfelt and he’s compassionate. What’s not to love, right? And he’s this dedicated dad,” Chapman tells TVLine. “Without giving too much away, I think it would be only natural if Billie were kind of interested in him, right?”

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Resident Season 5, Episode 10 “Unknown Origin.”] Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) has a secret, everyone’s becoming suspicious, and right now, only one person knows what’s going on: Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), who ran tests on him. The Resident winter finale just ended on the cruelest of cliffhangers, with Conrad about to tell Bell the cause for his hand tremor and vertigo, which reared its ugly head once again in “Unknown Origin.” Also in the episode, Conrad joined Dr. Kit Voss’ (Jane Leeves) Flight Go team and met fellow doctor Kincaid Sullivan (Kaley Ronayne), whose expertise came in handy back at Chastain and led to a job offer. But while Kit has brought her on temporarily, there’s a matter of the secrets Cade is keeping, ones that Conrad and Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) are digging into after online searches came up with zero results. Executive producer...

We're still reeling from The Resident Season 5 Episode 5's shocking final moments.
If you watched The Resident online, you'll know that after a touching Dumb Supper ritual Conrad hosted with his colleagues and friends to honor Nic one final time, he went to check on baby Gigi.
Except, it wasn't the little Gigi we've seen and fallen in love with, but an older Gigi -- a toddler who is walking and talking now.
Yes, The Resident jumped ahead three years, and that's where the series will pick up from there.
The time jump blew fans away and garnered mixed reactions.
However, here at TV Fanatic, we're excited about how this hit medical drama can revitalize itself five years in and still keep us on our toes.
A time jump was a great way to move Conrad ahead further in his grief journey, so we didn't spend the entire season with...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Resident Season 5 premiere “Da Da.”] Doctor down! The Resident Season 5 premiere may end on a sweet note, with Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) home with baby GiGi — his wife, Nic (Emily VanCamp), is off at a spa retreat, with no indication of how she’ll be written out — but he has no idea what’s going on back at Chastain: Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) is in need of serious medical care after inhaling something in a deserted supply room. In somewhat happier news, Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) may have just made his feelings known to Dr. Kit Voss (Jane Leeves) by asking her out for dinner. She turns him down, tired after handling a ransomware attack as the hospital’s CEO; he says he didn’t mean anything by it, but we have a feeling he did. TV Insider turned to co-showrunner and executive producer Andrew Chapman...

Is nurse practitioner Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp) flatlining? How, exactly, VanCamp’s character will be written off is a guarded secret. But her fate—teased in an ominous Season 5 promo—will surely rock the world of her husband, Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), who, The Resident exec producer Peter Elkoff says, is already “struggling” with his high-powered career and their 9-month-old baby. Things are even more off kilter at Chastain Park Memorial: A ransomware attack tests CEO Kit Voss (Jane Leeves) in the opener. “It’s a real ticking time bomb,” says Elkoff. Watch an exclusive sneak peek as things begin to go horribly wrong (but enjoy Conrad with baby GiGi) above. Could she find solace with the mostly redeemed Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood)? “We’ll do a little will-they-won’t-they with them,” teases EP Andrew Chapman. Also, the reinflated ego of Dr. Aj Austin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) gets checked via a new mentorship.

Miles Fowler (Women of the Movement) is set as a new series regular on the upcoming fifth season of Fox’s hit medical drama series The Resident.
Fowler will play Trevor, the estranged son of Billie (Jessica Lucas). Trevor is a medicinal chemistry major who has edge and thinks the system is screwed up. He’s hotheaded and passionate. He’s also a genius…for now, perhaps, just a misguided one.
Fowler’s casting follows last month’s exit of Emily Vancamp after four seasons as a series regular and female lead. The storyline of her character, Nicolette ‘Nic’ Nevin, is expected to be wrapped up early into Season 5.

Emily VanCamp is leaving Fox’s medical drama “The Resident” after starring on the show as nurse Nicolette ‘Nic’ Nevin for four seasons.
There is hope that VanCamp returns to the series in some fashion, sources tell Variety. Season 5 of the series debuts on September 21, and a brand new promo released on Monday features plenty of peril and a conspicuous lack of VanCamp.

Expect to see much more of Dr. Leela Devi when The Resident returns: Anuja Joshi, who debuted as the surgical intern during Season 4, has been promoted to series-regular status for the show’s fifth season, per Deadline.
Joshi first appeared on the Fox medical drama about halfway through its fourth season, with Leela quickly establishing herself as an impressive doctor while quietly struggling with dyslexia. Throughout Season 4, she ultimately earned Aj’s respect in the operating room and formed a strong bond with Devon, the latter of whom she kissed (and probably more!) in the May 18 finale.

The doors at Chastain Memorial Hospital will remain open after Fox renewed The Resident for a fifth season. The renewal, which was unveiled as part of Fox’s 2021-22 schedule, was not a surprise given that the medical drama is the network’s biggest scripted series after its 9-1-1 franchise.
It joins the procedurals, which were both also renewed, on the schedule, remaining in its Tuesday at 8pm slot. It will precede new drama series Our Kind of People.

Actress has played Dr. Mina Okafor throughout Fox medical drama’s first four seasons
“The Resident” series regular Shaunette Renée Wilson and her fan-favorite character Dr. Mina Okafor exited the Fox medical drama on Tuesday’s episode. That plot twist came about because Wilson decided she wanted to leave the show, which is now in its fourth season.
“After deeply thoughtful reflection, I approached the producers some time ago asking to leave the show and they agreed — and gave my character a wonderful sendoff,” Wilson said in a statement. “I am appreciative of them for allowing me to embody as beautiful of a soul as Dr. Mina Okafor. When Covid-19 touched down in the U.S. last year, reality wasn’t safe from the virus’ grasp and neither was fiction. As frontline workers and medical personnel worked tirelessly to care for coronavirus victims and stop the spread, showrunners and executive producers behind TV’s most popular medical dramas thrust the pandemic into primetime.
Now a year into the historical health crisis that has killed more than 538,000 people nationwide, Deadline spoke with medical drama showrunners who reflect on the discussions that led to their coverage of the coronavirus, how they advanced a story that still has no end and where their shows will go from here.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back a year into the pandemic, there are things we all we wish we knew at the start of the health crisis and shutdown. As part of interviews for Deadline’s story about how TV drama series incorporated the pandemic on-screen while dealing with it off-screen, several top showrunners were asked what their current selves would tell their February-March 2020 selves.
Here is what This Is Us‘ Dan Fogelman, The Good Doctor’s David Shore, New Amsterdam‘s David Schulner, The Resident’s Andrew Chapman and Grey’s Anatomy’s Zoanne Clack had to say about what they would’ve done differently if they had the opportunity to go back.

Faced with the same problem as every other medical drama producing new episodes amid the pandemic, Fox’s “The Resident” decided it had a responsibility not to shy away from the real-life impact of Covid-19 in its fourth season — but that it also had an obligation to its fans to focus on the characters and stories they love.
The solution the writers and producers arrived at was to devote Tuesday’s Season 4 premiere to telling the story of the early days of the pandemic in flashbacks while focusing on the long-awaited wedding of Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) and Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp) in the post-pandemic timeline where “The Resident” will exist for the remaining of the season.
