When she’s not busting a move in the latest teaser trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness, Emma Stone is adding an untitled Universal film to her Hollywood dance card. The Oscar-winning actress is in talks to join Brigsby Bear director Dave McCary for a forthcoming feature. McCary is in negotiations with Universal Pictures about helming the mysterious project. Stone and McCary tied the knot in 2020, making this union a couple’s venture.
Patrick Kang and Michael Levin, the supervising producers of NBC and Utv’s Young Rock, wrote the original spec screenplay for the untitled project. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine will produce via 21 Laps alongside Micheal H. Weber. Emma Stone, McCary, and Ali Herting could join the production effort through Fruit Tree.

Emma Stone is back with director Yorgos Lanthimos for “Kinds of Kindness,” the movie they shot in secret in New Orleans in fall 2022. Stone won the Best Actress Oscar this year for Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” which was in post-production and readying for fall festivals by the time “Kinds of Kindness” had wrapped. Watch the latest trailer for the “Kinds of Kindness,” which was just confirmed to premiere in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, below.
Along with Stone, the triptych film from Lanthimos stars Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, and Hunter Schafer. Searchlight Pictures’ previously announced June 21 release date for “Kinds of Kindness” was the writing on the walls that the film would show up in Cannes competition — Lanthimos’ first at-bat on the Croisette since 2017’s “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”

Emma Stone, hot off her Best Actress Oscar-winning performance in Poor Things, reunites with that film’s writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos for Kinds of Kindness. The first teaser trailer doesn’t give away much of the plot, instead showing off clips of a fast car, a body being dragged in a hallway, a slap, a dance, and a German Shepherd. The only dialogue is a voice-over by Stone saying, “This is it. The moment of truth. Isn’t it wonderful?”
Lanthimos’ latest film also features Poor Things‘ Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley. Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer also star.

There’s a whole lot of slapping, dancing, freaking out, and reckless driving in the new teaser for Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming movie Kinds of Kindness, which is set to hit select theaters on June 21.
The new clip for the film doesn’t offer, well, anything in the way of plot, but it is a tantalizing look at the film’s absolutely stacked cast. Emma Stone is doing some seriously reckless driving, as is Jesse Pelmons, who’s also getting slapped in the face by Margaret Qualley. Set to the Eurythmics...

Poor Things stars Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe reunite with Yorgos Lanthimos for the first look at Kinds of Kindness.
A teaser for the “triptych fable,” previously titled And, gave fans a first look at the film, which in its official synopsis follows “a man without a choice who tries to take control of his life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”
“This is it. The moment of truth,” says Stone in a voiceover as a purple sports car drifts. The 45-second teaser gives glimpses at each of the film’s stars, many of whom are previous Lanthimos collaborators — Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer.

Fans of Arthouse Emma Stone Sicko Cinema™, have I got good news for you. Coming off her second Oscar win, the "La La Land" star is currently in the midst of shooting what's sure to be a strange and twisted spin on the Western genre in the shape of Ari Aster's "Eddington." But before we lay our eyes on the "Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid" director's latest oddity, Stone herself will reunite with her "Poor Things" and "The Favourite" helmer Yorgos Lanthimos for a new project.
Titled "Kinds of Kindness," Stone and Lanthimos finished shooting their new film near the tail-end of 2022, which is the reason it's already good to go so soon after "Poor Things" once again stirred up the "Are Sex Scenes Necessary?" discourse. The movie sees Lanthimos directing from an original script he co-penned with his "Dogtooth," "The Lobster," and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer...

Yorgos Lanthimos is examining the kinds of cruelty in his latest film “Kinds of Kindness.”
The feature, which was originally titled “And”, marks Lanthimos’ eighth film and reunites the auteur with two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone following her recent “Poor Things” Best Actress win. Stone previously garnered her first Oscar after starring in Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”
While the plot details for the Searchlight Pictures release remain elusive, we do know that “Kinds of Kindness” is an anthology film with three separate storylines that collide. Stone stars alongside her “Poor Things” co-stars Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, plus Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, and Mamoudou Athie.
“It’s great to be working again with Emma,” Lanthimos told The Guardian about the project. “It makes it so much easier to have someone there who trusts you so much, and who you trust so much.” The duo are next set...

The planet might be on fire, but at least Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have found one another. The "La La Land" actor and "The Lobster" filmmaker didn't exactly read as an obvious pairing, yet they're already on their way to joining Hepburn-Cukor, Stewart-Hitchcock, and De Niro-Scorsese in the ranks of all-time great actor-director duos. After a couple of feature films ("The Favourite" and "Poor Things") and a short ("Bleat"), the one thing we can say for certain is that we'll never know precisely what these two are going to get up to next.
Speaking of which, we're only days removed from Stone's surprise Best Actress Oscar win for "Poor Things," yet we've already got a release date for her next collaboration with Lanthimos. The duo will return in just a few months with "Kinds of Kindness," a film that they shot back in late 2022 which was previously going by the (impressively Seo-unfriendly) title "And.

It is no secret that Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’ career has been evolving quite nicely since his hit film The Lobster. The Greek director has gained numerous major awards and nominations, and with his recent hit film, Poor Things, winning several Academy Awards, we are pleased to confirm that his upcoming movie, Kinds of Kindness, will be released later this year – on June 21, 2024.
Unlike his two previous films, The Favourite and Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness will be based on an original script written by Lanthimos himself and Efthimis Filippou. It is going to be an anthology film, which the director himself described as “a contemporary film, set in the US – three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story”. The actors in question include Lanthimos’ favorite collaborator, Emma Stone, as well as Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie,...

Searchlight is wasting no time getting the next Yorgos Lanthimos film out there.
Less than a week after “Poor Things” won four Academy Awards include Best Actress for Emma Stone, distributor Searchlight Pictures has announced the release date for his next film, “Kinds of Kindness“: It will open in theaters June 21, 2024. A limited release will kick off the launch for Lanthimos’ eighth feature film, with a wider nationwide opening to follow.
The June 21 release almost certainly means that “Kinds of Kindness” will be ready for Cannes 2024 — and will potentially be his first feature to premiere on the Croisette since 2017’s “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” His past Oscar winners “The Favourite” and “Poor Things” both went the way of Venice. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival runs May 14 through May 25.
“Kinds of Kindness” is an anthology film with three separate storylines that collide, though plot details remain scarce so far.

One might say Poor Things is an epic culmination for Ed Guiney: It’s a film ten years in the making that lurked in the shadows of the producer’s three other collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos (the duo also has a fifth project on the horizon: Kinds of Kindness).
Based on a novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things is Lanthimos’ biggest movie yet. Vivid screenwriting from Tony McNamara is brought to life by vibrant sets, costumes and music with acclaimed performances from Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef and Willem Dafoe. The film took home the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and garnered 11 Oscar nominations last month, the second most of any film behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
For Guiney, Poor Things has been a decade-long thrill ride on Lanthimos’ fantastical roller coaster. “His worlds are so extraordinary, his imagination is so compelling,...

Following part one of our 2024 preview, we’re counting down our 50 most-anticipated films of the year.
50. The Actor (Duke Johnson)
Duke Johnson, one half of the directing duo behind Anomalisa, makes his solo directorial (and live-action) debut with The Actor. For being based on the posthumously published novel from Donald E. Westlake, a synopsis points towards an amnesia thriller with André Holland as a New York City actor beaten and stranded in 1950s Ohio. Gemma Chan and Toby Jones co-star. As a state native I’m intrigued how they shot Budapest for small-town Ohio––the two don’t exactly scream perfect matches, but I won’t doubt the movie magic before I see it. Anomalisa was a wholly original stop-motion feature; we’re intrigued how Johnson continues that creativity in the live-action realm. – Caleb H.
49. Presence (Steven Soderbergh)

Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film is kind of three movies in one, according to the auteur.
Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness” (originally titled “And”) was filmed in New Orleans while “Poor Things” was in VFX post-production in October 2022, and in case it wasn’t enough having two films back-to-back, the “Favourite” filmmaker revealed to The Guardian that “Kind of Kindness” is a trio of storylines.
“It’s a contemporary film, set in the U.S. — three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story, so they all play three different parts. It was almost like making three films, really,” Lanthimos said. “It’s all shot and we have started editing.”
“Kinds of Kindness” reunites Lanthimos with “Poor Things” stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley, plus “The Favourite” actor Joe Alwyn. Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, and Hunter Schafer mark their respective first films with Lanthimos as part of the cast.

If there’s one director whose entire filmography is consistently horror-adjacent, it would have to be Yorgos Lanthimos. The Athenian filmmaker is mostly known for his absurdist dramas, but nearly all of his movies feature some form of horrific undercurrent beneath the offbeat dialogue and odd characters. And while his 2023 feature Poor Things wears its horror influences on its Frankenstein-inspired sleeves, today I’d like to look back on the director’s most effortlessly terrifying film – 2017’s psychological thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
After reaching mainstream critical acclaim with 2015’s The Lobster, Lanthimos was basically given carte blanche on his next strange project. Borrowing the premise of an ancient Greek play, his next film would be a modern-day tragedy co-written by Efthymis Filippou and financed by Irish and British production companies. And like Yorgo’s previous English-language project, The Killing of a Sacred Deer would also benefit...

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “The Favourite” scored 10 Oscar nominations in 2019, including bids for Best Picture and Best Director for Lanthimos and a Best Actress win for Olivia Colman. Stone and Lanthimos reunite this year for “Poor Things,” which could be set to have an even better year at the Oscars than their previous film did.
“Poor Things,” from Searchlight Pictures, follows Emma Stone as Bella, who is brought back to life by Willem Dafoe‘s doctor. Bella then goes on a journey of self-discovery, aided and hindered alike by the likes of Mark Ruffalo‘s caddish lawyer and Ramy Youssef‘s hopeful suitor. The movie, which releases in US theaters on December 8, has received exquisite reviews and a near-perfect score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, we are predicting “Poor Things” to have a rich year at the upcoming Academy Awards. Here’s a full list of the categories we think...

Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the most idiosyncratic filmmakers currently working and he put that enigmatic style to effective use once again with his new movie “Poor Things.” This Searchlight Pictures release, due out on Dec. 8, follows Emma Stone as a reanimated woman who goes on a journey of self-discovery. Willem Dafoe is the doctor who brings her back to life while Mark Ruffalo delivers a hilarious turn as a caddish lawyer who falls for her. The film has earned rave reviews so far, with a near-perfect 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s critical consensus reads: “Wildly imaginative and exhilaratingly over the top, ‘Poor Things’ is a bizarre, brilliant tour de force for director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone.”
Many critics are calling the film his best work to date. Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) observed: “‘Poor Things’ is a work about distortion, assemblage, and invention, and thus...

Almost sixty years ago, Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio made his feature directorial debut with the psychological drama Fists in the Pocket. Kavac Film recently acquired the remake rights to that film, and The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that it’s going to be made under the title Rosebushpruning. Kristen Stewart (Underwater), Elle Fanning (The Great), and Josh O’Connor (The Crown) have signed on to star in the film.
Karim Aïnouz, whose period drama Firebrand premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this month, will be directing Rosebushpruning from a screenplay by Efthimis Filippou (Dogtooth). Fists in the Pocket was about a young man suffering from epilepsy plotting the murders of his dysfunctional family.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Fists in the Pocket proved controversial at the Locarno Festival, where it had its premiere and was condemned by several major cinema figures, but was warmly received by younger critics and audiences, becoming a sleeper hit.

Mubi has picked The Settlers, the latest pic from Chilean filmmaker Felipe Gálvez for North America, the UK, Latin America, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Benelux, and India.
The pic debuted in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section last night. Mubi has said it will release the film theatrically in the U.S., UK, and additional territories with release plans to be announced.
Set in Chile at the beginning of the 20th century, The Settlers follows a wealthy landowner who hires three horsemen to mark out the perimeter of his extensive property and open a route to the Atlantic Ocean across vast Patagonia. The expedition, composed of a young Chilean mestizo, an American mercenary, and led by a reckless British lieutenant, soon turns into a “civilizing” raid.
The deal was negotiated with mk2. Producers include Giancarlo Nasi, Benjamín Domenech, Santiago Gallelli, Matías Roveda, Emily Morgan, Thierry Lenouvel,...

Kristen Stewart and Elle Fanning will lead the cast of the upcoming psychological drama Rosebushpruning, Deadline reports, a new take on the 1965 movie Fists in the Pocket.
From The Match Factory and Mubi, the film will be directed by Karim Aïnouz (Firebrand).
“Rosebushpruning is a dark satire of family and social values, centering on a young man suffering from epilepsy who plots the murders of his dysfunctional family.”
Josh O’Connor will also star in Rosebushpruning.
Efthimis Filippou (Dogtooth) wrote the screenplay for the remake.
“Marco Bellocchio’s astonishing debut, Fists in the Pocket, was released over 50 years ago and had a huge impact on Italian cinema and storytelling at the time,” said Aïnouz.
The filmmaker adds, “I’m excited to be collaborating with Efthimis Filippou to revisit this iconic work to create a contemporary parable about the death of the traditional patriarchal family — which I hope will be touching and provocative in equal measure.

Remember "The Favourite?" It feels like anyone who has seen that film counts it among their own personal favorites of 2018, if not one of their favorites in general. Director Yorgos Lanthimos is responsible for a large part of its brilliance, as well as the ingeniousness of his other insightfully weird films "Dogtooth," "The Lobster," and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer." But the film's success can be in large part pointed firmly toward Emma Stone's undeniably terrific work in the film, morphing herself into the mind of an 18th century obsessive determined to curry favor in any way she can. Needless to say, we've all been waiting with bated breath for Stone's next collaboration with Lanthimos, and we finally have it on the horizon with "Poor Things."
But that isn't the only upcoming collaboration Lanthimos has with Stone, which is interesting in and of itself. Their film "And," which...

When I saw "The Lobster" in 2015, not a single person in the theater laughed throughout the entire film except for my husband and me. It seems we were the only ones who had gotten the memo that director Yorgos Lanthimos' latest movie was, in fact, a comedy to be laughed at. To be fair, "The Lobster" is very dark, and its humor may not resonate with every person who sits down to watch it. The movie tells the story of David (Colin Farrell) who ends up at a hotel for single people after his wife leaves him. At the hotel, David must find a new partner in 45 days, otherwise he will be turned into an animal of his choosing. David would like to be a lobster, though his brother, who visited the retreat not long ago and failed to find a new mate in time, has been turned into a...
