Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” based on the book by Georgia Hunter, tells the true story of the Kurcs, a Jewish family who lived in Poland at the onset of World War II. The series follows the Kurcs as the events of the war and the Holocaust separate parents and children, tearing families apart.
As casting director Fiona Weir read the script for the first episode, showrunner Erica Lipez stressed that despite the grim setting, it ultimately was a celebratory story — and it was important she get the family dynamics right.
Speaking with Variety, Weir says Hunter, who based the book on her family experiences, turned out to be her most valuable source. “These were real people that she either knew or discovered, so there was lots to talk about in who these people were. And then, we had to create a group that organically felt like a family,...

The co-creators of Fauda and Tehran have detailed how they are helping relief efforts as Ted Sarandos paid tribute to Lior Waitzman, a sound technician on Netflix’s first Hebrew-language original series, who was killed on Saturday during the Hamas-led attack on Israel.
“A lot of folks are still reeling from this horrific terrorist attack from Hamas,” said Netflix co-ceo Sarandos at the top of an on-stage talk with Bloomberg. “Many of us have probably lost friends and family. At Netflix, one of the victims, Lior Waitzman, was working on our first Netflix original series there, called Bros.”
On Saturday morning, an unsuspecting Waitzman went out cycling, before the attack began. A short while later he texted his wife to say there had been a shooting. “That is the last we heard from him, as he was a victim of that terrorist attack,” said Sarandos.

Ted Sarandos, the co-ceo of Netflix, has confirmed that Lior Waitzman, a sound editor who worked on Netflix’s “Fauda” and Apple TV+’s “Tehran,” was killed in Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel this week.
Sarandos noted while speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference Thursday that many people in the room had likely lost “friends and family or friends of family” in the attack over the weekend.
“One of the victims of this terrorist attack, Lior Waitzman, was working on our first Netflix original series there called ‘Bros.’ He worked in the sound department,” Sarandos said. “On Saturday morning, he went out biking, stopped and texted his wife that there’s been a shooting and that was the last she heard from him. Because he was a victim of that terrorist attack.”
The Netflix head also referred to what happened as a “horrific terrorist attack by Hamas” and added, “We...

Ted Sarandos, co-ceo of Netflix, said the talks between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP fell apart Wednesday because of an additional “levy” the actors union was proposing to put on every streaming subscriber.
Sarandos has been one of the four CEOs, alongside Bob Iger, David Zaslav and Donna Langley, who sat in on negotiations with the Writers Guild of America and had been recently meeting with SAG-AFTRA.
Speaking at a Bloomberg conference Thursday, Sarandos said they had offered SAG-AFTRA a “success-based bonus,” which he said was similar to the writers’ deal, but which cost the studios four to five times more.
“That was rejected and the counter was this levy on every subscriber, and prior to that was a levy on all revenue, where basically the union will take a certain amount of money for every subscriber to a service,” Sarandos said.
“That issue that we got resolved with...

Note: The following interview was conducted prior to SAG-AFTRA joining the WGA on strike.
“The Crowded Room” has come and gone, marking a huge shift for series star Tom Holland. And with it came the daunting task of playing multiple characters — but also sharing those characters with other actors. Fortunately, they worked out a system.
The whole truth of Danny Sullivan’s (Holland) life was officially revealed in Episode 7 of “The Crowded Room,” explaining exactly what Jack (Jason Isaacs) meant in Episode 6 when he mentioned “us.” It turns out, most of the characters we’d met up to that point were all Danny’s alters, each taking turns driving his life when they felt he needed them most.
The finale revealed that Jack, Yitzhak, Ariana, Mike and Johnny were all alters. Of course, through most of the series, those characters were played by actors who aren’t Tom Holland. Only...
