Signature Theatre presents Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train, by Pulitzer Prize-winner Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by Obie Award-winner Mark Brokaw. This is the first NYC production of this play since its debut in 2000, when The New York Times' Ben Brantley called the play 'written in fire,' and wrote that 'plays of this ilk automatically raise the body -- and mind -- temperature of New York theatre.'...

They say the show must go on, and that has proven especially true of the Signature Theatre’s star-crossed revival of the 2000 Stephen Adly Guirgis prison drama “Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train.” In the last few weeks, director Mark Brokaw’s production has lost both of its lead actors to medical or personal conflicts. But two remarkable actors — Sean Carvajal and Edi Gathegi — have stepped in and (mostly) hit their marks. Guirgis has written an issue play, with a capital “I,” one that touches on issues of crime and punishment, free will, religion and justice. And he’s built it on.

How much punier can plays get on Broadway? The director Mark Brokaw has found a way. It’s no longer enough that audiences are asked to sit through an evening that’s only 80 minutes sans intermission. With Simon Stephens’ one-act “Heisenberg,” which opened Thursday, Brokaw has reduced the performing space at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre to a narrow catwalk, with ten rows of stadium seating placed on the stage. Theatergoers face each other as Mary-Louise Parker and Denis Arndt act and push around Mark Wendland’s minimal set, which consists of two tables and two chairs. Parker plays a 43-year-old woman who.

We got the chance to speak with Runoff Writer/Director Kimberly Levin, who explains some of Runoff's taut formal elements and untangles the creative ties between her transition from Biochemist to theater director, and now filmmaker.
"...I can say without hesitation that if you want to be able to say you were there when a great American filmmaker's career kicked off, you need to see "Runoff."
-Matt Zoller Seitz (RogerEbert.com)
Fortunately for me, I can say I was there at the advent. I was struck by this debut. It came out of left field and seemed too dense and shrewd in form to be cultivated by fresh talent. Runoff is a febrile farmland drama shot on location in Kentucky (though its rustic world building suggests any rural landscape). It stars Joanne Kelly as Betty, a female character a billion times more empowering than any scantily-clad female super-hero...

Euripides wasn’t much of a yock-meister, but his Medea is getting most of the laughs in Nicky Silver’s new supposed-to-be-a-comedy, Too Much Sun. Now at the Vineyard in a grim production directed by Mark Brokaw, it stars the resourceful Linda Lavin as Audrey Langham, a theatuh actress of a certain age and (self-)regard, who, after a life spent playing “Miss Hannigan in January, Mother Courage in the spring,” finally loses it during tech rehearsals in Chicago for her turn as the filicidal princess. Medea’s rage is as nothing compared to Audrey’s; she turns on the director (“Every idea that comes out of your head is crap!”), the costume designer (“What the hell am I wearing!? Am I waiting for the Mardi Gras parade to pass?”), and finally herself for having wasted years “saying words that aren’t mine in imaginary rooms.” Off she storms, leaving...

Cinderella
If you have a little kid at home between the ages of a seven-year-old who can sit through a show and a fantasy-prone twelve-year-old, Cinderella might be the ticket to buy if you’re going for them. With a mediocre score from the legendary team of Rogers & Hammerstein and a contemporary book by Douglas Carter Beane, this musical is ideal for kids and perfectly tolerable for adults.
Though this production plods along with the story that everybody knows, there are moments of theatrical magic that might be lost on one not jumping to suspend disbelief, but will likely dazzle those who still think their uncle can pull a quarter out of his ear. Beane’s book seems geared at amusing the more mature audience members, but often tries too hard to be modern-day in its humor, detracting from the story while only paying off in moderate laughter.

The Lyons Cort Theatre, NY
Despite solid performances from Linda Lavin and Dick Latessa, The Lyons is a lost cause before the curtain closes on the first act, and there's no improvement thereafter. A fumbling and confused script by Nicky Silver is the production's greatest weakness, but some forced and postured performances don't help matters.
Linda Lavin is a powerful and commanding presence with the sexiness of a confident, mature woman. She possesses a firm grasp of sadistic humor, getting laughs with facial expressions and eye movements alone, and her first scene with Dick Latessa would have you think that you were in for an enjoyable dark comedy. Lavin and Latessa have a twisted chemistry and establish a comic rhythm that the production's other players are never quite able to jump into. Latessa attaches himself to his hospital bed with more than an IV, creating a believable deathbed atmosphere without...
