That storm of sharks known as Sharknado has not finished wreaking havoc, as Syfy has chosen to take advantage of the wave of enthusiasm for the ridiculously awesome, awesomely ridiculous mashup of killer weather and killer fish. The usual Saturday schedule of Sinbad and Primeval: New World has been given over to a day of sharks:
TV Spot: Shark-a-Thon — All Day Saturday, July 27th on Syfy
Click here to view the embedded video.
That “Shark-a-Thon” starts Saturday morning at 9/8c with Malibu Shark Attack and finishes off with an encore presentation of Sharknado beginning at 9pm/8c.
Whether it’s because of the shark programming or the decision had already been made is anyone’s guess, but the remaining episodes of Primeval: New World and Sinbad that would have aired through August 31 and August 24, respectively, have now been consolidated into marathon screening days.

Syfy was smart to schedule Primeval: New World for summer; it’s a fun summer watch. The dinos are pretty cool looking, and mostly nicely ferocious. If you missed last week’s premiere, here’s the synopsis, with my notations in parentheses:
Evan Cross (played by Niall Matter, Zane on Eureka), a business mogul, uses his company’s resources to research random anomalies (if you’re not familiar with the original series, “anomalies” look like big sparkly portals and at this point in the series, no one knows for sure what they are). When bodies and missing people start increasing, a single-manned government agency code-named “Project Magnet”, and a member of Predator Control (in the U.S. it would be “Animal Control” – Primeval: New World is a Canadian show), join the group. Connor Temple (yes, Andrew Lee Potts, Connor from the original Primeval series, guest stars) tries to warn Evan...

It looks like our summer is shaping up very nicely, thanks to some excellent scheduling by The Powers That Be. At least our weekends will be taken care of. There is bad news for the Primeval spin-off today. Primeval: New World was the Canada Space channel version of the dino-heavy, British, sci-fi series. After its first season run it has been announced that it will not be renewed for a second season.
From Omni Film Productions and it’s British partner, Impossible Pictures, Primeval: New World starred Sara Canning and Neil Matter. According to THR the gang can start looking for work elsewhere.
Producers cited poor ratings as the reason behind the decision to drop the show. Americans will get the chance to check out season one of Canada’s Primeval: New World on the Syfy channel sometime this year, despite the sour outcome. DVDs will also hit the market, thanks to the international distributor, Entertainment One, in the U.S. In the UK, DVD sales kick off in April.

Warning: this feature contains spoilers for Primeval New World
Last week Primeval New World came to an end on Canadian sci-fi channel Space after a thirteen-episode run. A spin-off from the UK Primeval, now seemingly languishing in cancellation hell, it was purported to be an “older, darker and scarier” version of the five-season programme that inspired it, about anomalies opening up around the world allowing creatures from the past and future to invade our world, and the team who deal with them.
Primeval New World featured an entirely new cast – with one guest appearance aside – and a team discovering the anomalies for the first time. Admittedly, the show had its ups and downs (and more of the latter near the beginning of its run...

Philip takes a spoiler-free look at the first episode of Primeval: New World, airing in the UK this evening on Watch...
1.1 The New World
With the UK based original version of Primeval on what could well be a permanent hiatus, we do at least get to enjoy a thirteen-part Canadian spin-off. Originally broadcast on North American channel ‘Space’ back in November/December (and currently on a mid-season break) the new series takes the original idea of holes in time through which past and future creatures pass and gets them opening up in Canada, investigated by a fresh team of anomaly investigators.
Those new to the concept will find their introduction to the series relatively pain-free in series opener The New World, but it's handled well enough for Primeval regulars to not feel bogged down in catch-up, which is a difficult balance but done well here.

The Canadian followup to a popular British series will find its way onto Syfy next year, making the cable channel what appears to be the new home for series from the United States' northern neighbor. No air date has been set yet for "Primeval: New World," but it's set to star "Eureka's" Niall Matter, "The Vampire Diaries'" Sara Canning and Danny Rahim as a team of animal experts and scientists investigating paranormal events while battling both prehistoric and futuristic creatures. The series follows "Primeval," which aired on ITV from 2007 until 2011, and was shown to American audiences through BBC America. "Primeval" was described by some critics as ITV's answer to the popular Doctor Who franchise on BBC, most notably the "Doctor Who" spinoff series, "Torchwood." But "Primeval" ...

We have been reading, longingly, about the upcoming Canadian spinoff of the UK dinosaurs-in-the-modern-world series Primeval entitled Primeval: New World. We thought it would be fun. Then when we heard Niall Matter (Zane on Eureka) had been cast, we got even more jealous of our northern neighbors. Then when we heard it would be promoted as “darker and scarier” than the original series from whence it sprung, it sounded right up our alley. But that is all behind us now as we rejoice over today’s announcement that Syfy has picked up the series for the U.S. market. First we have a trailer for you to check out, so that you can be as excited as we are, before getting to the details of the press release:

In what could be big news, Pink News is reporting that Catholic Cardinal Keith Michael Patrick O'Brien is giving a speech Sunday removing opposition to civil marriages in the UK, but says the church will still oppose same-sex marriages taking place in churches, Catholic or not. Of course, this is probably an excellent April Fool's Day joke, and I do say excellent as it was written subtly.
In news that I'm going to assume is an April Fool's Day prank, they're also reporting that Arnold Schwarzenegger is considering replacing Mickey Rourke in the Gareth Thomas movie. Can't they find someone Gareth's own age?
But what appears to be true about Arnold is that he, Danny DeVito and Eddie Murphy are planning a sequel to Twins called Triplets. Because the world really needs that.

A spinoff of the British ITV series that started in 2007, "Primeval: New World" is getting a new venue, some new characters, but still some of the great monsters -- with a bit of a North American touch. Joining the new series, which will be shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, are Niall Matter from "Eureka," Sara Canning from "Supernatural" and "The Vampire Diaries," Miranda Frigon, Geoff Gustafson, and Danny Rahim. Matter played Zane Donovan in nearly 50 episodes of "Eureka," and is expected to appear right up to the series end.
