Another week, another installment of VOD Vault – taking a look at some on-demand releases that have hit various VOD platforms recently. It’s been a few months since our last installment, so what say we kick off this reboot of sorts with two movies on the opposite ends of the filmic spectrum: low-budget Western-style crime action/drama The Good, the Bad and the Dead and Rupture, the latest film – a sci-fi thriller – from actress Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo).
The Good, The Bad and the Dead
Stars: Johnny Messner, Dolph Lundgren, Michael Pare, Danny Trejo, Vivica Fox, Natassia Malthe | Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr.
Also know as 4Got10, The Good, The Bad and the Dead is the latest film from actor/director/producer Timothy Woodward Jr., lensed as part of his multi-picture deal with Cinedigm. It’s also one of three films Woodward; screenwriter Sean Ryan and actor Johnny Messner,...

Dementedly creepy punk body-horror grossout comedy plays like a padded-out short. But Natasha Lyonne and Chloë Sevigny have a ball as cheerful wastrels. I’m “biast” (pro): desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Somewhere just sideways of our world — like perhaps in the realm of Repo Man — perpetually wasted stoner chick Lou (Natasha Lyonne: The Intervention) wakes up one morning after a particularly weird night of partying and realizes that she’s pregnant. But not normal-pregnant: “I’m some kind of goddamn freak show,” she complains to her best friend and cheerful fellow wastrel Sadie (Chloë Sevigny: Zodiac), via what she declares “some weird immaculate conception shit.” (She hasn’t gotten laid in, like, forever, she swears.) And so this punk Canadian body-horror grossout comedy is off down a bizarre yellow-brick road of conspiracy theories about alien abductions,...

The team behind new Australian feature The Burning Kiss has some exclusive images and a sample of the score to share with Twitch's readers. "Mario Bava's The Whip And The Body and avant-garde filmmakers like Stan Brakhage and Danny Perez were influential over these tarot card inspired chapter breaks that feature in the film. They've got a mystical pop art, neon Vegas vibe that I really love," explains director Robbie Studsor about the style of the visuals. The film's music score was crafted by talented Australian composer and 2014 Apra Screen Music Award nominee Christopher de Groot using a unique orchestration of guitar, piano, vibraphone, Mellotron, harps, 8-piece flute choir, vocals, congas and a home-made gamelan. "It's a tropical noir nightmare!" he explains about the music in...

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.
The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.

All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. With Jose Maria Yazpik, Karina Gidi,...
