Sony has removed “El Muerto,” a Marvel movie about a luchador supervillain starring Bad Bunny, from its theatrical-release calendar. The “Spider-Man” baddie’s standalone film was previously scheduled for January 12, 2024; now, per Sony, it’s “Tbd.”
An individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire that “El Muerto” is still in development, but with the writers strike ongoing and the musician’s tour dates, rescheduling the release is complicated. “El Muerto” isn’t the first superhero movie to be impacted by the WGA strike, but there are enough challenges here to wonder if “El Muerto” will be re-slotted, or if it’s down for the count.
This morning, Sony emailed press with three updates to its domestic release calendar:
Seth Rogen’s “Dumb Money” has been moved up from October 20, 2023 to September 22, 2023. “The Book of Clarence” is being pushed back from that September 22 date to January 12, 2024. The “El Muerto” release date is now considered “Tbd.

Working on set of “Babylon” was basically an “exhilarating” party every day, according to the film’s breakout star Li Jun Li.
“I have to give it to the background actors; they are the most uninhibited, most committed people. These parties felt so real, and I think people were genuinely having an amazing time on set,” the actress told People of Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle’s new film, which she described as “wild”.
Set in 1920s Los Angeles, around the time Hollywood transitioned from silent films to talkies, the film features many lavish and extravagant party scenes, which came with the time period’s shift in film. Shooting the partying sequences often went on for several days and, as Li puts is, with each new day, the energy on set was just as infectious as the day before.

Christian Bale stars in the upcoming Netflix movie The Pale Blue Eye, directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Antlers) and based on the novel by Louis Bayard.
The Pale Blue Eye comes to select theaters on December 23, 2022, Netflix has announced this month, while the film will begin streaming on Netflix on January 6, 2023.
Christian Bale portrays retired detective Augustus Landor, tasked with investigating a series of murders. Check out brand new images below, courtesy of Vanity Fair today.
What’s particularly interesting about this project for horror fans is that Edgar Allan Poe is a central character in the story, and we recently learned that Harry Potter actor Harry Melling has been cast in the role of Poe. Melling, who recently appeared on “The Queen’s Gambit,” is perhaps best known for playing Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter film franchise.
Melling’s portrayal of Poe is teased in these brand new first-look images as well.

Thankfully today Vanity Fair ended our long drought of information, visual and otherwise, with several lux images from the film. Naturally then it's time to discuss our thoughts, yours and mine (as they come to me). Yours go in the comments. Please don't be shy. The team misses socializing with you in this way. Six years after winning an Oscar for "La La Land," Damien Chazelle is returning with yet another ode to the Cty of Angels. According to an exclusive chat with Vanity Fair, this particular project has been a long time coming — Chazelle has been working on the story for his upcoming feature film "Babylon" since he first moved to Los Angeles 15 years ago. When the idea first dawned on him, the plan was "just to do a big, epic, multi-character movie, set in these early days of Los Angeles and Hollywood, when both of these things were coming into what we now think of them as." After years of chipping away at the story, the character and dynamics finally emerged, and later this year, we'll see for ourselves what it all became.
For obvious reasons, it sounds like "Babylon" might share a lot in common with the very successful "La La Land.

July saw many adapted stories head to screens both large and small, sourced from novels, comic books and more, and August is no different with a bevy of book adaptations on the horizon.
Last month gave us adaptations of Delia Owens’ wildly popular novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” , Mark Greaney’s spy thriller “The Gray Man” and in series form “Paper Girls” on Prime Video starring Ali Wong and Jason Mantzoukas.
August also has a slate of book adaptations landing in theaters and on streamers. Two of them came from graphic novels, and one might sound familiar to fans of George R. R. Martin and “Game of Thrones.” For kids, there is the final season of “Locke & Key” as well as “Lost Ollie” which comes from “Ollie’s Odyssey.”

Joey King stars in Bullet Train.: Photo By: Scott Garfield Brad Pitt earned his first movie credit more than a decade before his future Bullet Train co-star, Joey King, was born, so she’s never known a world in which Pitt wasn’t a superstar. Working with the Oscar-winning actor for the first time, King wasn’t sure what she could expect, but she came away from the experience thoroughly impressed. If King was giving a Yelp review, she’d give him five stars — not only for his acting ability, she says, but also for the way he made her feel comfortable in their scenes together. On paper, Bullet Train should be the can’t-miss action film of the summer. It sports a talented cast, a fun premise, and a director who knows his way around a fight scene. But Bullet Train derails as soon as it leaves the station. Instead of an adrenaline-pumping action adventure, it’s a loud, obnoxious and pointless pileup that’s the cinematic equivalent of a toddler slapping you on the head with plastic nunchucks for two hours.
It’s probably well past time for Brad Pitt to be given his own “John Wick”-style franchise, and the star is easily the best thing about Bullet Train. As a criminal with the codename of Ladybug, he’s a navel-gazing self-improvement addict who vents his anxieties to an unseen handler (Sandra Bullock) and dreams of putting peace out into the world. The fact that he’s an assassin is meant to be...

Fans of frenetic, bloody action comedies like Smokin’ Aces, Shoot ‘Em Up, Kung Fu Hustle or just about anything from Guy Ritchie are gifted this summer with a likely candidate for their list of escapist favorites. The title of Bullet Train refers not only to Japan’s ultra-modern railway system, but to the collection of assassins and thugs who wend their way through the cars and each other for a variety of reasons. The mix of players and agendas will make little sense… until it does.
David Leitch enhances his credentials as stunt man who worked his way up to becoming a first-rate director, following the examples of Clint Eastwood, Hal Needham, John Ford, John Landis and others. After nearly 20 years of stunt work, with a bevy of acting gigs in the mix,...

“Boston Strong” is the phrase that came out of the remarkable, resilient response of the people of Boston after the terrorist bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon. “Boston Strong” spirit sparked admiration across the country, making the whole city seem heroic. Stronger is a true-story drama about one of the survivors of that attack, Jeff Bauman. Bauman lost both legs above the knees to the bomb but he not only survived, he helped identify one of the bombers.
Jake Gyllenhaal gives a valiant performance by as Bauman, but director David Gordon Green gives the audience a different kind of story than they might be expecting. Green’s previous films include Snow Angels (2007) and All The Real Girls (2003), and the director seems determined to fit this true story about a historic event into that dramatic mold.

As Spinal Tap lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel – wearer of anatomically correct T-shirts, owner of amplifiers that go to "11," writer of delicate compositions like "Lick My Love Pump" – Christopher Guest, along with director Rob Reiner and his co-writers/bandmates Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, turned 1984's This Is Spinal Tap into a devastatingly funny dissection of rock pomposity. To say that the film's mix of off-the-cuff jokes and straight-faced parody has influenced several generations of filmmakers and funny people would be a vast understatement – everyone from Ricky Gervais to Fred Armisen...

A movie like Furious 7 has a special sort of appeal. It is a formulaic thrill-ride plain and simple. Furious 7 is directed by James Wan who is far more famous for his horror films, Saw (2004), Insidious (2010), and The Conjuring (2013), than anything involving high-performance vehicles racing at insane speeds. Yet I can’t help but applaud a valuable franchise that decides to bring in new blood showing no fear of rocking the boat. Of course, we still get slow-motion acrobatic car shots doing hugely impossible things; so perhaps that is all that matters.
The film is written by Chris Morgan who penned the prior installment in the series, Furious 6 (2013), along with three other earlier entries. The characters are based on work from Gary Scott Thompson, who is the only original writer left from the start of the series. In this seventh iteration of the franchise, someone is hunting the...

Chicago – I’ve never classified myself as a “Fast & Furious” franchise fan. Nor have I been a hater. I’ve fallen somewhere in between – willingly watching the popcorn flicks but then quickly going about my life as fast as the furious action ended. Until “Furious 7”…
And it’s not just because we’ve lost Paul Walker much too soon, which, while extremely unfortunate, also unfortunately has the burden of being a boon to this film.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Going into it, I was just as curious how he’d be handled as I was about anything else about it. Since he can’t be in the eighth film, would Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner – Dominic Toretto’s close buddy – be killed off? Would it insensitively happen in a car crash? Or would writer Chris Morgan and director James Wan (“Saw,” “Saw III,” “Insidious,” “Insidious: Chapter 2,” “The Conjuring”) surprise us...

Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo are featured in the new theatrical poster from Sony Pictures Classics’ Oscar-y film Foxcatcher.
Based on true events, director Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher tells the dark and fascinating story of the unlikely and ultimately tragic relationship between eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont and two champion wrestlers, Mark and Dave Schultz.
Having seen the film at the press screening this week, I can say Carell gives a chilling performance of du Pont and is the highlight of the film. Expect to hear his name, a lot, over upcoming awards season. Bennett Miller won Best Director at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival in May and the film has screened at the Telluride, Toronto, New York, and London film festivals.

Sony Pictures Classics has sent us the new theatrical trailer and photos from director Bennett Miller’s film Foxcatcher, starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller and Anthony Michael Hall.
Based on true events, Foxcatcher tells the dark and fascinating story of the unlikely and ultimately tragic relationship between eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont and two champion wrestlers, Mark and Dave Schultz.
Foxcatcher is a rich and moving story of brotherly love, misguided loyalty and the corruption and emotional bankruptcy that can accompany great power and wealth. As with Academy Award nominee Bennett Miller’s previous feature films, Capote and Moneyball, he explores large themes in society through his complex character portraits of real people.
Steve Carell’s fans will be surprised to see him in a role as dark and challenging as John du Pont, a man of immense wealth and power whose downward spiral culminates in murder and imprisonment.

Foxcatcher has been managing a lot of hype since at least last November, and the release of the teaser trailer has caused quite a stir. The internet is throwing the name around, as well as both Channing Tatum‘s and Steve Carell‘s, connected with ideas like “Oscar contender,” and “Award worthy,” and while the trailer gives hope for a solid film, I have to wonder exactly where all the love is coming from.
To be fair, a lot of the discussion is obviously coming from people who have seen the film (it was at Cannes), but a lot of it is also coming from people who haven’t. The trailer gives us a Channing Tatum who stares very seriously, smacks himself across the face, and bashes his head into a mirror. Steve Carell is wearing a lot of latex on his face, and says, “Good,” while apparently doing a kind of Godfather impression.

A bad storm is about to unleash in the form of Denzel Washington in this first trailer for director Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer.
Written by Richard Wenk and based on the television series created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim, the film stars Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour, with Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo.
In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington plays McCall, a man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when McCall meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by – he has to help her.
Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem,...

Foxcatcher, which we’ve been hearing about for a while now, is one of those films that rarely works for me, but when it does is bound to become one of my favorites. Based on a true story, and detailing events far too wild to get picked up if they were fiction, Foxcatcher follows the real life of a wrestler who finds a rich patron to help him train for the ’88 Seoul Olympics.
It isn’t a weird story yet, but many are probably familiar with John du Pont (yes, du Pont), and his connection to Mark Schultz and his brother Dave Schultz. Pulled into du Pont’s bizarre life, Mark was sent on a wild ride by living with du Pont and training with him. It all went wrong, and kept going wrong, and Mark barely made it out the other side.

Channing Tatum, 21 Jump Street As expected, Phil Lord and Chris Miller's 21 Jump Street topped the North American box office on Friday, March 16, grossing $13.1 million (a respectable $4,197 per theater) according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Written by Inglourious Basterds actor and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World screenwriter Michael Bacall, and featuring Channing Tatum, Moneyball's Best Supporting Actor nominee Jonah Hill, Brie Larson, and Dave Franco, the action comedy is expected to take in approximately $35 million at 3,121 theaters over the weekend. If word-of-mouth is good and Sony Pictures keeps plugging its (and MGM's) $45m movie (not including marketing / distribution expenses), then it's certainly possible that 21 Jump Street will pass the $100 million mark before hitting the home video market. Last year, Sony's R-rated comedy Bad Teacher, starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, and Jason Segel, opened with $31.6m and went on to gross $100.2m domestically. Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, 21 Jump Street As expected during this spring-break week(end), 21 Jump Street topped the North American box office on Friday, March 16, grossing $13 million according to early estimates found at Deadline.com. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller from a screenplay by Michael Bacall, and featuring Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Brie Larson, and Dave Franco, the action comedy is expected to take in $35 million at 3,121 theaters over the weekend. As I walked out of the theater, my son (10) asked if The Muppet Show really used to be on TV, and you could see in his eyes that he was hoping it did, because then he could ask if we could get the DVDs. I told him it was, and recounted some of the memories of watching it every Sunday night. I could tell that I lost him somewhere along the way, as I tried to put together the idea of the weekly event that it was for me. My son, who by way of DVDs, Netflix, and Tivo, only has a vague idea of "live" television, and imagines it only in the anachronistic way that children try to conceive of archaic ideas thrown into the rest of the world they know (like people riding horses down paved streets with stoplights, or taking responsibility for their actions), didn't quite know what I was talking about.

Chicago – Modern country music is actually quite fascinating. Whereas in the classic days of the 1950s to ‘70s, when it was a cult stepchild of popular music, now it occupies the rarified heights of the Justins and Taylors. That is why “Country Strong,” starring Gwyneth Paltrow, is so annoying. It doesn’t even try to be modern.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
What is wrong with an exploration of modern marketing, pop music co-opting and celebrity worship that accompanies the post millennial pickers of C&W? Why the silly retread of what is essentially an “All About Eve” story – big country star out of rehab trying to resuscitate her career while young ingenue steps in? With its old fashioned melodrama, it fails to connect.
Kelly Canter (Paltrow) is the country mega-star in rehab, after losing a pregnancy when she fell on stage (and her blood alcohol was 1.9…a Tmi harshness that didn’t need...

"The Walking Dead" is coming to AMC this October -- check out this first photo of Andrew Lincoln as police officer Rick Grimes.
Grimes is the leader of a group of survivors following the zombie-pocalypse. So far the only other cast member is "The Ghost Writer" actor Jon Bernthal as Shane, the partner and friend to Grimes.
Robert Kirkman, creator/writer of the comic and executive producer on the series says, "Writing this book for the past seven years I've gotten very close to the character of Rick. Andrew Lincoln embodies every aspect of the character that fans know and love. After seeing this photo I don't think that there will be a doubt in anyone's mind that he's perfect for the role."
"We hope to do for zombies what 'Mad Men' has done for advertising," director Frank Darabont said in a recent behind-the-scenes look at the series.

As any Nicholas Sparks' novel will show you, life is one big sweeping romance, and as Amanda Seyfried proved to us in the film adaptation of Sparks' Dear John, love often involves rain, crying, and crying the rain. (But if I was waiting for Channing Tatum to come home to me, I'd probably be crying, too.) Since we can't help you get Tatum, we can help you find the necklace so many of you have been asking about. To sweetly accessorize her undying love, Seyfried's Savannah wore SonyaRenee's 14kt gold "Love" necklace (sonyarenee.com; $175), which also comes in other symbols,...

Chicago – Love stories are as common at the movies as popcorn and sticky floors. Despite this, rising stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried add their own spin to the timeworn plot theme in “Dear John.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Set initially in the year 2000, John (Tatum) is a soldier on leave when he first encounters Savannah (Seyfried) at the beach, where he gallantly rescues her purse after it falls in the drink. This gets him an invitation to a party that Savannah is throwing, and the first seeds of romance begin to sprout between the two.
In the next two weeks, the emerging couple grow close very quickly, as they find commonality and chemistry through their life’s purpose. Savannah is inspired to help others because of a father (Henry Thomas) and his autistic son. John is an Army Ranger with several tours of duty, escaping his home life because of a disconnect...

Avatar has now defeated Titanic in every milestone the great boat epic upheld for well over its decade in power. As the new king of the world, Avatar has every right to take its crown-and its nine Oscar nominations-and go quietly into the night. But will it? It's held on to the top spot for a miraculous seven straight weekends, and with last weekend's fall of only 10%, it looks like it can stay on top forever. That is, until it encounters the force of young, screaming teenage girls. Yes, Dear John looks like your typical sappy romance but don't underestimate the power of the sap.
