"Hello Jonathan - this is our future." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for the anthology horror film Phobias, a freaky new horror thriller "from the executive producers of Ready or Not." This originally premiered at last year's Mammoth Film Festival, arriving on VOD later this month. Five dangerous patients, suffering from extreme phobias locked in at a government testing facility, are put to the ultimate test by a crazed doctor and his quest to weaponize fear. The film's main segments are: "Vehophobia" (fear of driving), "Hoplophobia" (fear of weapons), "Robophobia" (fear of robots or A.I.), "Atelophobia" (fear of not doing something right), "Ephebiphobia" (fear of youth), and "Outpost 37" (fear of a crazy doctor experimenting on people). Directed by Camilla Belle, Maritte Lee Go, Joe Sill, Jess Varley, Chris von Hoffmann; and starring Alexis Knapp, Charlotte McKinney, Lauren Miller Rogen, and Leonardo Nam. This looks freaky. What was assumedly an easy score turns into a fight for survival for a trio of robbers who crash an elegant dinner gathering in Monster Party, the latest film from Chris von Hoffmann (Drifter). With Monster Party now in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD from Rlje Films, we caught up with Hoffmann for our latest Q&A feature to discuss working with a talented cast that includes Lance Reddick and Robin Tunney, instilling his horror movie with societal critiques, and the influence of popular party horror movies such as April Fool's Day and Society.
Hi Chris, it’s great to catch up again! Congratulations on your latest film, Monster Party. How did you come up with the idea for this movie?
Chris von Hoffmann: Thank you, great to catch up with you, too! Well, this story was actually probably the most personal story I’ve put on screen thus far.

I have to think writer/director Chris von Hoffmann saw The Purge and wondered what could be born from reversing the good guy and bad guy roles. Those are generic terms of course since both movies ultimately contain bad guys and worse guys, but for the sake of argument we’ll say that the characters we’re supposed to hope survive are “good.” Rather than fear an impending invasion, however, the “good” guys in Monster Party are the infiltrators. A trio of two-bit thieves, Casper (Sam Strike) talks accomplices Dodge (Brandon Michael Hall) and Iris (Virginia Gardner) into crashing the latter’s latest mansion catering gig in order to steal enough Malibu elite money to save his father from a gangster’s grip. Unfortunately they don’t know what the party’s guests are celebrating.

We’ve got a trailer here for a crazy looking gory horror flick called Monster Party. The story centers on three teenage friends who plan to infiltrate a mansion dinner party and rob the place.
As you might imagine, things don’t really go as planned and the guests at the party aren’t who they seem to be. This is a secret party that hosted by a a serial killer cult for the social elite.
I like the concept of the film and this first trailer makes it look like it could be a decent horror thriller! The ensemble cast includes Sam Strike, Erin Moriarty, Kian Lawley, Robin Tunney, Virginia Gardner, Brandon Micheal Hall, Bill Engvall, with Julian McMahon, and Lance Reddick.

AMC Networks’ Shudder has acquired exclusive streaming rights to Mandy, the Nicolas Cage-starring horror thriller that bowed to big buzz this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Rlje Films acquired the Panos Cosmatos-directed pic after its Park City bow and gave it a limited theatrical release in September, where it has been building a cult fan base thanks to its wild plot — Cage plays a man whose peaceful woodland existence with his wife is shattered by a nightmarish hippie cult and their demon-biker henchmen, propelling him into a spiraling, surreal rampage of vengeance. Andrea Riseborough and Linus Roache co-star in the pic produced by SpectreVision, Xyz Films and Umedia. The deal, which will target Shudder’s core genre aficionado subscriber base, also includes Canadian rights from Elevation Pictures. No premiere date on the streaming service has been set yet.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s international distribution company Telepool is investing in a genre slate from indie producer Eric B. Fleischman, along with Maurice Fadida’s Kodiak Pictures, Variety has learned exclusively.
Fleischman was a Sundance Film Festival breakout star in 2016, when at age 26, he made a strong showing with “Sleight” and “Carnage Park.” His company, Defiant Studios, will receive a cash infusion for several horror-thrillers, beginning with the film “Phobias,” which is currently in production.
The Smiths acquired Telepool in late June, with Marc Forster and his shop Elysian Fields. This marks the first significant investment and U.S. expansion for Telepool, a standalone theatrical and multi-platform distribution entity with a big presence in Europe. Kodiak is a producer on David Ayer’s upcoming “The Tax Collector,” starring Shia Labeouf, as well as Gerard Butler’s “Keepers.”

Cannibalistic killers in a post-apocalyptic landscape … are you yawning yet? Such is the unoriginal premise of Chris von Hoffmann’s feature debut, which reveals, if nothing else, its director's love and appreciation for genre films. The problem is that his low-budget effort, whose poster might as well be included in the dictionary definition of “derivative,” is nowhere near as good as its endless influences. Viewers would be far better off rewatching a Mad Max or Rob Zombie movie, or any episode of The Walking Dead, than paying hard-earned money to see Drifter.

Two brothers make a pitstop in a town teeming with cannibals in Chris von Hoffmann's Drifter, and for our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Hoffmann to discuss the making of his feature film debut.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Chris. How and when did you first come up with the idea for Drifter?
Chris von Hoffmann: I actually thought of the concept back when I was 16. It was just one of several script ideas I started putting together on paper but never saw it all the way through because of my attention span back then. However, I had the title, had written the opening scene and had the overall structure down, but it was slightly different. The original concept still centered on two brothers who wind up in a strange town, but the town was originally possessed by a...

You can be two things inside a post-apocalyptic wasteland devoid of morality according to writer/director Chris von Hoffmann: stoic badass on a journey of vengeance or unhinged cartoon cannibal with tongue readier to lick flesh than gun is to blow a hole in someone’s head. There’s no room for anything in between whether compassionate souls trying to survive amongst malicious wild cards or cautious, anxiety-ridden kids in way over their heads. Either way you’re going to die — not in an esoteric “we all die” sort of way, but a brutal demise brought on by that stoic badass or muscle-bound kook maniacally laughing with his/her tongue on your cheek. At least you can rest well knowing your killer will die soon too. It’s the little things after all.
So what do you do while awaiting death in such a nihilistic purgatory? Well, the characters...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Presidents' Day weekend was an interesting one at the box office, and as with most holiday weekends, it was particularly difficult to figure out how things might fare, other than The Lego Batman Movie, which remained at #1 with almost $45 million over the four-day weekend. Fifty Shades Darker followed with $21.3 million, about a 50% drop. Last week, I thought that the Ice Cub comedy Fist Fight would beat The Great Wall, although it seemed like it could be a close race. Nope. Matt Damon’s action epic came in third place with $21.6 million, which is a couple million more than my original prediction, but The Fist Fight fell short of my prediction by almost $10 million, grossing $14.5 million in its first four days.

The concept of “copying” has become demonized to the point of criticism in film these days, and for good reason. The concept of copying story points and aesthetics or visual flourishes from other films is cheating if there’s nothing else brought to the table. However, once in awhile, there’s actually a movie that comes along that isn’t exactly it’s own, isn’t exactly original, but has enough to create an entertaining movie. Drifter surprisingly fits right into that category. There are moments of the film that call back to so many films including, Mad Max, The Rover, the works of David Lynch and a variety of cannibal movies, but the overall stellar direction, editing, and acting make Drifter a film that continues to surprise and shock.
What allows this film to better occupy the range in which it’s inherent unoriginality doesn...

No one is safe in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Chris von Hoffmann’s upcoming “Drifter.” Seriously, no one. In von Hoffmann’s first feature film, two brothers find themselves crossing paths with a family of psychotic cannibals when they get stuck in a desolate town at the end of the world. Relatable.

In our exclusive clip, things are appropriately mysterious and terrifying as Vijah (Monique Rosario) is forced by the head cannibal in charge, Latos (Anthony Ficco), to tie Miles (Aria Emory) down to a couch and then watch, terrified, as his brother is thrown in the middle of what looks to be a large dirt circle made of garbage. They’re both bruised and bloodied, and von Hoffmann doesn’t make it easy on the audience by cutting away, but...
