It’s the first Monday in May and Desus Nice and The Kid Mero are sadly not preparing for a Met Gala debut. Instead, Desus quipped, “We’re just going to a gala where they’re showing the Mets game.”
That kind of quick wit is a good example of why more and more people have gravitated to the duo hosting Showtime’s first ever late-night show “Desus & Mero.” Approaching a decade since they were first paired together on the podcast-turned-web-series “Desus vs. Mero,” the New York natives born Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez have built a brand that grows stronger each day, staking their claim as the No. 1 show in late night until it manifests into reality.
While the series already collected a Writers Guild of America Award last year for Best Comedy/Variety Talk Series, it has yet to receive Emmys attention. But Mero told IndieWire over Zoom that its fourth season,...

A slice of pizza. The New York Yankees. Waiting for a delayed train on a sweaty, summer subway platform. Desus & Mero.
The comedy duo of Desus Nice (or Daniel Baker) and The Kid Mero (or Joel Martinez) is just about as New York as you can get — and more specifically, just about as Bronx as you can get. But their hyper-local humor and musings hasn’t stopped the bodega boys from gaining notoriety as the funniest guys on late night television, as co-hosts of Desus & Mero on Showtime .

Late-night television hasn’t changed a great deal since Johnny Carson took over The Tonight Show nearly 60 years ago. There’s been the odd exception, such as Arsenio Hall’s syndicated show finding a young audience and bringing Bill Clinton’s saxophone licks to the country, or Joan Rivers briefly interloping on Fox. However, it’s largely been the preserve of middle-aged white men, wearing suits, joking about the events of the day with a few celebrity guests and sketches thrown in.
Enter Desus & Mero, and more recently their protégée Ziwe.
Desus & Mero, otherwise known as Desus Nice and The Kid Mero (or Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez), have brought a louder, more youth-skewing, social media-friendly take to the genre, a gonzo, weed-smoking sensibility with fresh kicks.

Last week, there was an episode of “Desus and Mero” so good that Desus Nice and The Kid Mero (the stage names of hosts Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez) knew it as soon as they walked off the set.
“When we’re in the green room afterwards, you can kind of tell. We have fun doing the show, so me and Mero are cracking up afterwards,” Desus said. “We came off and we basically were like, ‘We bodied it.’ It felt like one of our live shows.”
Four months into their run on Showtime, “Desus and Mero” has found a late night sweet spot by staying relaxed. It’s a tricky balancing act to make their conversational riffing feel as spontaneous in the final product as it does in the studio. But part of that success has come from trying not to be too polished.

After leaving Viceland, “Desus & Mero” is getting a major upgrade when it premieres on Showtime Thursday night. Hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, aka The Bodega Boys, aren’t sweating the transition though. “In the alternate universe, we are probably working at the bodega, stocking shelves,” said Mero at a Television Critics Association press day earlier this month. Desus added, “When we first started our show, we were so broke. He had to scan me in on the subway because I had no money to go to the studio. That’s where the confidence comes from; we can’t lose because we already won.”
Showtime is just as high on the two Bronx personalities: The network put an offer out to Desus and Mero even before Viceland dropped them, and hyped the premiere with a Super Bowl spot and some synergistic ads. Showtime Entertainment co-president Gary Levine said,...

It wasn’t too long ago that Desus Nice and The Kid Mero were living their lives as Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez, two bored Bronx guys throwing jokes on Twitter about their frustrating jobs. But six years after joining forces, they’re poised to crash the overwhelmingly monochrome late-night talk-show party with their wicked wit, supreme confidence and a glossy new Showtime series, “Desus & Mero,” that bows Feb. 21.
Lounging in the neon, graffitied space at New York City’s Milk Studios, where they record the “Bodega Boys” podcast that launched their collaborations, Desus and Mero have just finished their first run of test shows for the Showtime venture. They aren’t necessarily surprised that they’ve climbed to such heights so quickly. But every so often, their leap into celebrity makes them reflect with awe on how far they’ve come.

Desus Nice and the Kid Mero have just sat down for lunch at an upscale Manhattan bistro when they notice the birdlike gentleman in the slate-blue sweater a few tables over. Desus sees him first: “Is that John Oliver?”
It certainly looks a lot like the star of HBO’s Last Week Tonight — a funny coincidence for two wiseguys who are about to start their own weekly late-night, half-hour comedy program, Desus and Mero, which premieres on Showtime February 21st. “Yeah, it is,” Mero says after surreptitiously checking out the competition.
