From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

One of the most anticipated and hottest films of 2024 is finally here. We are talking about Zendaya‘s Challengers which was memed to death for a threesome scene that was shown in the trailer but if you have seen the film then you know that the brilliance of the film is much more than that one scene. Directed by Call Me By Your Name‘s Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, the sports romantic drama follows the story of a talented tennis player Tashi, and her twisted relationship with two tennis players, one of whom is her husband now. Challengers stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor in the lead role with Jordan Thompson, Faith Fay, Hailey Gates, and Tierre Diaz starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the story of ambition and toxic relationships in Challengers you should check out these films with similar themes next.

Netflix has won the streaming wars, but of course, that doesn't mean it's perfect. One of the popular dings against the streamer is that many of its original productions share a similar flattened, brightly lit aesthetic -- a "Netflix look" that, fairly or not, can sometimes seem like an edict passed on to storytellers from the top down to make their shows and movies look a certain way. Naturally, this doesn't apply to every show, but if you watch enough of them, you'll start to see patterns emerge.
Thankfully, Steven Zaillian's "Ripley," a new take on Patricia Highsmith's famous con man story, is about as far from that typical "Netflix look" as you can get. Legendary cinematographer Robert Elswit imbues this show with a palpable style and personality, constantly playing with light and shadow and delivering spectacular results.

Amazon MGM Studios has closed a three-year first-look film deal with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories following the rousing success of his movie Road House on Prime Video, which was the most watched original movie for the studio ever with 50 million global viewers in the pic’s first two weeks.

Fresh Off ‘Road House,’ Amazon MGM Studios Signs First-Look Deal With Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories
Fresh off the release of “Road House,” Amazon MGM Studios has closed a three-year, first-look film deal with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories. Under the pact, Amazon MGM Studios will have first dibs on narrative features that the actor’s production company makes. The deal includes theatrical, as well as streaming releases.

In a busy weekend at the box office, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the Sydney Sweeney horror vehicle “Immaculate,” IFC’s “Late Night with the Devil,” and two animated rereleases (“Luca” and recent Oscar winner “The Boy and the Heron“) will compete for the top spots. Meanwhile, a recent box-office smash is hitting digital platforms.
The contender to watch this week: “Bob Marley: One Love“
Reinaldo Marcus Green‘s biopic about the pioneering reggae singer is still riding its theatrical wave ($170 million worldwide and counting), but “Bob Marley: One Love” is also available to purchase or rent on VOD. Kingsley Ben-Adir shed his Kenergy to play Marley, icon of dorm-room posters and pacifistic chill-out vibes, opposite a supporting cast that includes Lashana Lynch, Tosin Cole, “Happy Valley” breakout James Norton, and Michael Gandolfini. “One Love” is a fairly rote retelling enhanced by its subject’s music, but even the weakest biopic tendencies have a groovy appeal.

Musical biopics have taken on something of a stranglehold among Hollywood studios in recent years, no doubt buoyed by the eye-popping performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" back in 2018. Ever since, we've watched beloved singers and bands receive their own dramatizations on the silver screen, from Elton John in the sneakily great "Rocketman" to Baz Luhrmann's fever-dream epic "Elvis" to the recent news that the Beatles would be getting the "Avengers" treatment in the near future.
In the midst of all this hoopla came "Bob Marley: One Love," a film only tepidly received by critics but one that proved to be a hit among audiences. Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the famous Jamaican singer, musician, and activist, the biopic proved to be a winner at the box office and further established its lead as one of our more versatile performers today. In short, "One Love" defied the odds of its January release...

Before “Bob Marley: One Love” hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, the musical biopic about the Reggae legend was expected to sing its way to No. 1 on the charts.
But box office projections indicated the Paramount movie — which chronicles Marley’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) rise to fame in the mid-1970s and complex relationship with his wife Rita Marley (Lashana Lynch) up until he died in 1981 — would start slow. It looked like it would collect $30 million and $35 million during the six days between Valentine’s Day on Wednesday and Presidents’ Day on Monday.
Instead, “One Love” smashed those expectations, earning $52 million during the extended holiday stretch. It remained victorious in its sophomore outing (despite the presence of three new releases), raising its domestic total to $71 million. After three weeks in theaters, the film is nearing the $150 million mark globally. It’s an impressive benchmark for a PG-13 drama that’s aimed...

It remained victorious in its sophomore outing (despite the presence of three new releases), raising its domestic total to $71 million. After three weeks in theaters, the film is nearing the $150 million mark globally. It’s an impressive benchmark for a PG-13 drama that’s aimed...

Randy Spendlove, president of worldwide music and publishing at Paramount Pictures, is no stranger to musical biopics. His roster includes “Dreamgirls” and “Rocketman.” When it came time to bring reggae icon Bob Marley’s story to the big screen, his challenge remained the same as always: “How do you tell the story about a legendary figure? How do you accomplish it? And how do we make sure we utilize Bob?”
Early meetings took place during the pandemic with Marley’s sons Ziggy and Stephen as well as director Reinaldo Marcus Green over Zoom. The answer would be in authentically preserving Bob Marley’s live recordings and enhancing them – with actor Kingsley Ben-Adir’s vocals layered in.
However, the first complication the team needed to overcome was clearing the music rights.

Movie theaters have had a rough start to the year, but amid the sparse February release slate "Bob Marley: One Love" has found the stage it needed. The biopic from director Reinaldo Marcus Green has passed the $100 million mark at the box office in 10 days, including a record-breaking opening in Jamaica. The film has also held on to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office in its second weekend, fending off fresh competition from "Drive-Away Dolls," "Ordinary Angels," and "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba."
10 days into its theatrical run, "One Love" has grossed $61.4 million domestically and $39.7 million overseas for a total of $101.1 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It's now looking at a second weekend in the region of $13-14 million at the domestic box office, which even on the low end equates to a very respectable 53% hold.

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” is feeling more than alright at the global box office. The musical biopic has generated $101.1 million worldwide after only 10 days in theaters, including $61.4 million in North America and $39.7 million from 59 international territories.
“One Love” retained the top spot on domestic charts in its second weekend of release, grossing $3.7 million on Friday. Internationally, the film added $3.3 million on Thursday and expanded into eight new markets this weekend.
“Bob Marley: One Love,” which opened on Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, beat expectations in its box office debut with $28.6 million over the traditional weekend and $52 million during the six-day holiday stretch. Although the biopic landed mediocre reviews (and holds a 42% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes), it earned an “A” CinemaScore from early audiences. “One Love” cost $70 million to produce.

Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love delivered a huge $50 million-plus domestic opening over the six-day Valentine’s Day-Presidents Day corridor, enough to crush Madame Web‘s $26.2 million start, a record worst for Sony’s superhero adventures.
Monday estimates show One Love raking in $52 million for the six days domestically, up from Sunday’s estimate of $51 million. That includes $34.1 million for the four-day Presidents Day weekend and a record $14 million on Valentine’s Day (rival studios say the decision to go out on sweetheart’s day was a smart choice in building momentum). The movie’s weekend debut is on par with the starts of such musical biopics as Rocketman or Elvis, and did almost double the business it was tracking to do. (Grosses for all films could shift again when final weekend numbers are tallied following the Monday holiday.)

Monday Am: No surprise as Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love continues to overperform now at $52M over 6-days after a better than expected Sunday of $9.45M (to originally expected $8.55M).
Monday is looking to ring in $5.5M. Current 3-day is $28.6M, 4-day is $34.1M. Some falsely guessed that coming off a record Valentine’s Day of $14M that Bob Marley: One Love would be front-loaded, ala The Color Purple which posted $18.1M on its opening Christmas Day (granted that had previews rolled into it). However, Bob Marley has a bigger appeal than that feature take of the Broadway musical; for in six days, the reggae legend biopic has already made 86% of what Color Purple finaled at ($60.5M). Overall, a great start for what will be a piece of counterprogramming as we approach Dune: Part Two on March 1.

Updated: Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love brought folks together around the world in its opening frame, singing up a sweet estimated $80M global bow. After coming on strong in early overseas play this week, and as audiences turned a deaf ear to critics, the international box office portion of that is $29M, landing well ahead of expectations.
The Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed biopic is out in 47 overseas markets and on a like-for-like basis including previews is 14% above Elvis and 12% above Rocketman for the same grouping, making it the second biggest music biopic opening behind only Bohemian Rhapsody.
Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, currently attending the BAFTA Film Awards here in London, Bob Marley: One Love opened at No. 1 in 13 markets and set new opening-day records for a music biopic in the UK and France among others.
In Jamaica, it now holds the record for the biggest film opening of all time.

Updated: Paramount’s musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” ruled in its box office debut, beating expectations with $28.6 million over the traditional weekend and $52 million during the six-day holiday stretch.
It was initially projected to generate $30 million to $35 million between Valentine’s Day on Wednesday and Presidents’ Day on Monday. The film came in slightly above Sunday’s domestic estimates of $27.7 million for the three days and $51 million for the six. It experienced an uptick because audiences dug “One Love,” which landed an encouraging “A” CinemaScore from moviegoers. Critics weren’t as fond of the by-the-numbers retelling of Marley’s life and music career as evidenced by the film’s 43% rotten average on Rotten Tomatoes. Reinaldo Marcus Green (“King Richard”) directed and co-wrote the PG-13 “Bob Marley: One Love,” starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the iconic reggae singer and Lashana Lynch as his wife Rita.

There's music in the air. Following the mammoth success of "Bohemian Rhapsody," which grossed $910.8 million at the box office following its release in 2018, studios rushed to get the ball rolling on other music biopics, and it's an investment that has mostly paid off. The latest success story is "Bob Marley: One Love," directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green ("King Richard") and starring Kingsley Ben-Adir (a.k.a. the Ken who brought his drumkit to the beach), which is continuing to dominate the six-day holiday frame after beating "Madame Web" to the No. 1 spot by a huge margin on Valentine's Day. Of particular note is its success in Marley's home nation of Jamaica, where "One Love" has scored the biggest box office opening day of all time.

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” continued its run as box office leader through the specialized six-day holiday frame, adding $7.4 million on Friday from 3,539 locations to bump its domestic tally to $25.3 million. The biopic about the reggae legend could even double the six-day haul of Sony’s new superhero film “Madame Web,” which earned $4.3 million from 4,013 theaters on Friday. North American haul for the Marvel Comics adaptation currently stands at $12.5 million.
Both features opened on Valentine’s Day and are hoping to carry momentum through the Presidents’ Day holiday. “One Love” asserted itself out of the gate with an impressive $14 million on Wednesday, boosted by a handful of premium large-format auditoriums (“Madame Web” has the majority though). I was both excited and worried for Bob Marley: One Love, a biopic about one of the most emblematic figures in Jamaica’s history, who deeply impacted its cultural and political landscape by becoming a pioneer of the reggae music genre and, ultimately, a global icon. Reinaldo Marcus Green being announced as the director instantly caught my attention since, after all, he’s the filmmaker responsible for one of my favorite biopics of the century, King Richard. However, the involvement of multiple screenwriters – Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street), Frank E. Flowers (Shooting Stars), Zach Baylin (Gran Turismo), and Green himself – as well as Marley’s family production company, raised concerns about potential biases and a lack of critical depth.

Without Valentine’s Day date nights to bolster grosses, ticket sales for “Bob Marley: One Love” fell sharply on Thursday.
The drama about the reggae legend earned $3.8 million in its second day of release, a 73% drop from its debut that brings its stateside total to $17.9 million. The Paramount release is hoping to hit the right notes over Presidents Day. It is projected to earn $30 million to $35 million over the six-day holiday stretch.
Its main competition is from Sony’s “Madame Web,” which is the studio’s latest attempt to expand its Spider-verse of Peter Parker-adjacent heroes and villains. Sony has had a mixed track record, scoring with the likes of “Venom” while falling flat with “Morbius.” “Madame Web” grossed $2.2 million its second day of release, bringing its domestic total to $8.2 million. Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love easily maintained its lead over Sony’s troubled superhero pic Madame Web at the Thursday box office after opening the previous day at $14 million from 3,536 theaters, the top midweek opener ever for Valentine’s Day, the studio says. The honor previously belonged to 2012’s The Vow ($11.5 million). Better yet — and despite “meh” reviews — audiences seem to dig One Love and gave it an A CinemaScore.
The Bob Marley biopic earned another $3.9 million Thursday for a two-day domestic tally of $17.9 million. It is also a force overseas, including opening Wednesday to $2.3 million in the U.K., a record for a music biopic.
In North America, One Love is doing more than double the business of Madame Web, which grossed $6 million on Valentine’s Day after getting ravaged by critics and a C+ CinemaScore from audiences. It added $2.2 million Wednesday for a two-day total of $8.2 million.

Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love had offshore audiences getting together and feeling more than alright in Wednesday international box office play. Beginning overseas release yesterday, the Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed biopic grossed $4.9M across 10 markets, several of them giving the story of the reggae icon No. 1 status and the biggest or second-biggest launch day ever for a music biopic — in Jamaica, it scored the biggest opening day of all time.
The running international cume is $5.4M including previews. A further 26 markets open today; and through Friday, the Kingsley Ben-Adir-starrer will be out in a total 47.
Significant starts include the UK at No. 1 on Wednesday, grossing $2.3M at 687 locations. This is the biggest opening day for a music biopic ever. France also debuted at the top of the chart with $1.3M at 590 sites for a cume (including previews) of $1.7M through yesterday. This marks the second biggest music biopic...

When movies come out, we grade them with reviews, define them by box office returns or eyeballs on streaming services, and maybe trophies down the line. Here begins Deadline’s occasional peek into the creative aspirations, and the sweat and blood that propels ambitious films.

Bob Marley: One Love
In today’s challenged theatrical marketplace, it’s particularly pleasing when a plan works out. Slotted against an underperforming Madame Web for President’s Day weekend, Paramount Pictures’ Bob Marley: One Love on Wednesday set the Valentine’s Day opening record with a $14 million gross, and the film has a nice chance to eclipse the initial $30 million long weekend projections. Per Rotten Tomatoes, the Paramount film has pleased audiences (95% approval) more than critics (44%), but Reinaldo Marcus Green’s skillfully made biopic of an iconic artist...

Paramount Pictures’ music biopic Bob Marley: One Love has made a strong start at the North American box office, grossing $14m on Wednesday (February 14) to become, according to Paramount, the biggest mid-week Valentine’s Day opener ever.
The record was previously held by Sony’s romantic drama The Vow, which had an $11.5m North American opening in February 2012.
One Love opened in 3,536 domestic locations ahead of the Friday-to-Monday US Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.
The film also opens this week in 47 international markets, including Australia, Benelux, Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico, Scandinavia, Spain and the UK. Openings will follow in Italy...

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” stirred things up at the Valentine’s Day box office. The biopic about the reggae legend is outpacing estimates after opening to $14 million domestically. It added $4.9 million to its haul from 10 overseas markets, including the U.K., France and Spain. Its global gross stands at $19.4 million.
Those domestic numbers easily overshadow the opening of Sony’s “Madame Web,” the latest entry in the studio’s hit-and-miss, cinematic Spider-verse. The comic book adaptation generated a little over $6 million domestically.
“Bob Marley: One Love” was initially projected to collect $30 million to $35 million stateside between Wednesday and President’s Day on Monday. But unless the grosses are front-loaded, it could exceed those estimates. “Madame Web” is expected to generate $26 million during the same six-day period.
Neither film was cheap. “Bob Marley” cost $70 million and “Madame Web” carries an $80 million budget — and those figures don’t includes...

Valentine's Day gave the box office the shot in the arm it sorely needed as both Paramount's "Bob Marley: One Love" and Sony's "Madame Web" opened in theaters. They will both have a nice, long initial stretch as they not only got the mid-week holiday opening, but they will benefit from this Monday's President's Day holiday as well. As far as the head-to-head battle goes? It's not going to be remotely close, as the Bob Marley biopic is crushing Sony's latest Marvel Comics adaptation in the early going.
"One Love" pulled in $14 million on Wednesday, which marks a new record for a mid-week Valentine's Day opening. While that's nowhere near the record "Deadpool" ($42.5 million) set on the holiday back in 2016, which fell on a Sunday that year, it's now a high watermark for a non-weekend V Day debut. The previous record holder was 2012's "The Vow" ($11.6 million). Given...

Thursday Update: Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love was bigger than projected yesterday earning $14M; the best Valentine’s Day mid-week take ever. Audiences loved it more than critics with an A CinemaScore and 5 stars on Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak and an 80% definite recommend. In addition, it has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 95%.
Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web did $6.05M at 4,013 theaters with a C+ CinemaScore. Oy. That’s lower than the B earned by Marvel Studio’s The Marvels, but it’s the same grade as Sony/Marvel’s Morbius.
Wednesday Update: Moviegoing is slowly getting back into fashion, with Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love biopic seeing an estimated $12 million on Wednesday. That’s a record for a movie playing on a midweek Valentine’s Day, besting the $11.6M made by the 2012 Channing Tatum-Rachel McAdams romance The Vow.
