Chicago – The Season 18 Finale of Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema (Apuc) is the Hong Kong Showcase from April 19th-21st, 2024, featuring a Lifetime Achievement Award for the legendary Rebecca Pan, Hk filmmakers/actors and current Hong Kong cinema.
In March 1972, Rebecca Pan self-financed the production of the first ever Mandarin musical, “Pai Niang Niang,” and performed it 60 times at the Princess Theatre (in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui district). This is a piece of Hk art and cultural history, and an important milestone of Rebecca’s long career. This work used the Broadway musical model to adapt the famous myth “Legend of the White Snake,” and brought together Eastern and Western theatrical styles for the first time.

It’s been a long wait for The Goldfinger, which reunites Infernal Affairs stars Tony Leung and Andy Lau with writer-director Felix Chong: production began in February of 2021, our first look arrived spring 2022, and for some time it was all quiet on the eastern front. But a trailer this summer confirmed it’ll hit Hong Kong on December 30, and with only a month to go there’s a new, English-subbed preview that suggests the film will, at least for extravagance, have been worth the wait.
The thriller also stars Simon Yam, Philip Keung, Alex Fong Chung-sun, Charlene Choi, Chin Ka-lok, and Carlos Chan, and is inspired by the story of the Hong Kong conglomerate Carrian Group, which was embroiled in a scandal.
Set in the 1980s, the film depicts cut-throat machinations between Hong Kong’s jostling business elites amidst the backdrop of the tail end of British colonial rule.

About a year ago we got the news that Tony Leung and Andy Lau would finally be reuniting after their trio of Infernal Affairs films. Coming from Infernal Affairs writer Felix Chong, who scripts and directs, the film was announced with the title Goldfinger (though no relation to Bond), but now some are referring to it as Once Upon a Time in Hong-Kong. Whatever it may end up being called, the first look has arrived above courtesy of Kevin Ma.
With it being 18 years since their last collaboration, the film carries much anticipation and hopefully we’ll get news about its release soon. The thriller also stars Simon Yam, Philip Keung, Alex Fong Chung-sun, Charlene Choi, Chin Ka-lok, and Carlos Chan. It’s inspired by the story of the Hong Kong conglomerate Carrian Group, which was embroiled in a scandal, and one can check out the synopsis below.

Hong Kong is rocked by a series of brutal murders. The victims are suspects of cold cases who have eluded arrest for many years. The gang of killers, who call themselves “The Chosen Sleuths”, are vigilantes who are taking justice in their own hands and openly challenging the Hong Kong police. In response, the police form a task force of their own “chosen sleuths”, headed by a husband and wife team, to stop the criminals.
Lee Jun (Sean Lau Ching-wan) was a legend in the police force as an ace detective before the onset of his mental illness. Once nicknamed “The Chosen Sleuth”, Jun now lives as a hobo on the streets after he was disgracefully dismissed from the force. To prove that he is not a lunatic, but the real “Chosen Sleuth”, Jun joins the fight against the gang to stop their elaborately laid plans. Racing against time, Jun...

The short life and brilliant career of Hong Kong singer, actress and social activist Anita Mui is celebrated in the middling biopic “Anita,” starring 31-year-old model Louise Wong in her film debut. This handsomely decorated and lushly filmed portrait nails the look and electric atmosphere in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry during its 1980s and ’90s heyday but only fitfully captures the sassy energy and fearless spirit that made Mui an adored figure who became known as the “Madonna of the East” and the “Daughter of Hong Kong.” Archival footage of Mui sprinkled throughout the film highlights the difference.
“Anita” joins a long list of productions about Mui (Miu Yim-fong), who died from cervical cancer in Dec. 2003 at the age of 40. Among these are the lengthy Chinese TV series “Anita Mui Fei” (2007) and “Dearest Anita” (2019), a fact-based drama inspired by members of the Mui Nation online fan club. This big-budget...

In Anselm Chan’s debut full-length film, dark comedy blends with romance in a twisted exploration of love and commitment. Although closed-minded and traditional in its execution, “Ready O/R Knot” still has a significant number of darkly comedic moments.

In 2002, Andy Lau and Tony Leung reunited for action crime feature Infernal Affairs, an instant hit which not only spawned two back-to-back sequels the following year, but also sparked the interest of Martin Scorsese, who remade it for his Best Picture-winning The Departed. Now, the Hong Kong legends are reuniting once again, 18 years after the third Infernal Affairs film, for a new thriller set in the 1980s.

Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Andy Lau will team up in a new major action movie titled “Goldfinger,” local reports said Friday.
The two beloved Hong Kong-born A-listers haven’t worked together since the end of the “Infernal Affairs” trilogy 18 years ago.
The reunion will be written and directed by Felix Chong, the screenwriter for that series. It is backed by Emperor Motion Pictures and mainland Chinese partners, with a reported budget of around $30.8 million (RMB200 million).
Chong found success in mainland China in 2018 with his counterfeiting thriller “Project Gutenberg,” which he wrote and directed. Starring Chow Yun-Fat, Aaron Kwok and Zhang Jingchu, it grossed $183 million in China and $4.3 million in Hong Kong, going on to win best film, best script, best director and four other prizes from 17 nominations at the 2019 Hong Kong Film Awards.

Within the thriller genre, it is quite difficult to present the audience with a subject matter or story which is original as much has already been told. Even though that is the case few of its stories, as a film or as a novel, unfold in a way that manifests a true feeling of suspense without revealing its true motives and twists too early. Undeniably, considering its critical and commercial success, Japanese writer Yusuke Kishi has achieved such a rare accomplishment with his 1997 novel “The Black House”, which has been adapted into a movie three times already. The latest adaptation, directed by Hong Kong director Yuen Kim-wai, has been quite a commercial success in its own right given its success as the Chinese box office.

Films that mix genres can be unexpectedly exhilarating but it's a tough balance to strike and, despite some interesting ideas and a clever approach to flashback, second-time director Yuen Kim-Wai gets caught somewhere in a no-man's land between psychological thriller and slasher stylings in Legally Declared Dead.
The cerebral element of the film holds plenty of promise, as our hero, of sorts, is a mild-mannered insurance broker, Yip Wing-Shun (Carlos Chan), who begins to have serious doubts about the suicide of youngster Kafu (Anthony Chau-Sang Wong) - an incident which triggers unwelcome memories of his brother's death as a child.
The film - which screened at Fantasia 2020 - begins with Yip's brother, in a desaturated style used by Yuen to indicate flashbacks, stepping off the edge of a high-rise block. Visuals throughout return to this cue, with buildings often shot in a looming fashion by cinematographer Ronnie Ching or the.

For the action movies fans, Renny Harlin has earned the status of a living legend with the films he made during the 90s: “Die Hard 2” (1990), “Cliffhanger” (1993), “The Long Kiss Goodnight” (1996) and “Deep Blue Sea” (1999). For the last five years, the Finnish-American filmmaker has been mostly working in mainland China and Hong Kong where he has helmed three films so far. “Skiptrace” (2016) was a reasonably fun action-crime-comedy starring Jackie Chan and “Jackass'” Johnny Knoxville, while “Legend of the Ancient Sword” was an expensive flop. His latest movie, “Bodies at Rest”, is an addition to the collection of Christmas-set action flicks, which premiered at the last year’s edition of Hong Kong International Film Festival, before a short festival tour that included Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy and Edinburgh International Film Festival. Shootouts and car chases are interrupted only by brief bouts of middling melodrama in “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords,” an in-name-only sequel to the 2013 hit about cops involved in the war on drugs. Vigorously directed by prolific veteran Herman Yau (“Shock Wave”) and well served by an all-star cast headed by Andy Lau and Louis Koo, this Hong Kong action-thriller isn’t deep but is certainly not dull. Mainland audiences have gone wild for “Drug Lords,” with 1.8 million admissions and a $105 million gross in 7 days since its July 5 release, which suggests the potential for relatively strong returns in the U.S., U.K. and other territories as well. Hong Kong release is set for July 16.

Legal thrillers are rarely seen in the Hong Kong cinema market and director Wong Kwok Fai has filled this gap with “The Attorney”, an intense character study that juxtaposes a veteran disenchanted lawyer played by Alex Fong, to an idealistic young lawyer (Carlos Chan) on the background of a political conspiracy, highlighting the limits of the judicial system when dealing with the power of money.
Veteran award winner actress Nina Paw, Liu Kai Chi and Patrick Tam are among the excellent cast.
Synopsis:
A jaded hot-shot attorney reluctantly takes a case of a young man being accused of murdering the daughter of the biggest tycoon in Hong Kong. Little does he know, he’s about to be swept up in a political conspiracy.

Big-budget action blockbusters “Raging Fire” and “The Rescue” headlined Emperor Motion Pictures’ (Emp) star-studded announcement at FilMart on Tuesday, which also saw many familiar Hong Kong faces returning for locally focused projects.

Last month’s Hong Kong Film Awards was on a special mission. In addition to the usual star-studded glamour, the event was literally a stage for newcomers. Lesser-known young actors were given the opportunity to present awards as well as giving speeches to introduce the best film contenders to the audience.
The event, with 37 years of history behind it, has never felt so young and refreshing.
The special treatment given to the young actors was seen as a response to a crisis of the Hong Kong film industry. As established stars ranging from Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau to international action heroes Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen age well into their 50s and 60s, there’s no new generation of local younger stars to follow in their footsteps.

Engineer Grace Wong is kidnapped by thugs looking for her brother. Though her captors have destroyed the telephone in the room she is being held captive in, Grace is able to use her technical skills to repair the phone enough to call a random number. She gets through to slightly hapless debt collector Bob and implores him for help, setting Bob off on a mission to save a complete stranger from a mysterious group of conspirators, putting his life and relationship with his estranged son in danger.
This Chinese-Hong Kong remake of Cellular (and based on the same script by Larry Cohen) hits a lot of the right notes to make a satisfactory, dynamic thriller. Benny Chan...
