Exclusive: Jet-set, celebrity artist Domingo Zapata will direct an adaptation of his 2017 semi-autobiographical novel The Beautiful Dream of Life.
Veteran producers Cary Granat and Ed Jones have signed on to produce the feature adaptation.

On Jan. 22, the sales agents of WME Independent braced themselves for an all-night negotiation at the Sundance Film Festival. Once a staple of major film festivals, where million-dollar price tags soar as high as the altitude in the Utah mountains, these kind of marathon bidding wars had gone digital during the pandemic, or disappeared nearly entirely.

Nascent US sales outfit WME Independent has swooped on five genre features from Southeast Asia and Taiwan, and is launching pre-sales at the Marché.
The deals were brokered by Singapore-based Nelson Mok, WME’s director, advisory, film group, who is in talks with international buyers in Cannes.
The titles include Thai horror The Cursed Land, co-directed by Panu Aree and Kong Rithdee, which follows a widower who travels to Thailand’s deep south to seek help from a witch doctor. Producer is Nonzee Nimibutr, whose credits include Nang Nak.

Indie film sales, financing, and distribution shop WME Independent has bolstered its ranks with several new hires, Variety has learned exclusively.
Division co-heads Deborah McIntosh and Alex Walton announced on Monday the arrival of Julia Harris as senior vice president of business affairs, Melissa Martinez as vice president of marketing, and Victoria Romley as an agent focused on international distribution. All appointments are effective immediately.
“Julia, Melissa and Victoria each bring unique perspective to the team, and we’re excited to continue the growth of this team with these hires” said McIntosh and Walton. “As we continue to evolve, each of these talented executives will ensure we are best positioned to serve our clients and their projects.”

Momentum Pictures has acquired North American and UK rights to Blumhouse Productions’ thriller Dashcam from director Rob Savage, who broke out in 2020 with his pandemic horror feature, Host. The Entertainment One company plans to release it in theaters this summer.

As U.S. and international film fans are heading back to Boulevard de La Croisette for the in-person 2021 Cannes Film Festival, the festival itself looks to be substantially different this year to film buyers and sellers. According to multiple sales agents, most of the sales for films happened in the weeks leading up to the festival at the Marche Du Film, the festival’s marketplace that took place “pre-screening” this year in a virtual format due to all the Covid-related delays. IFC Films has acquired from Topic Studios the North American rights to “The Nowhere Inn,” the film starring, co-written by and centered on indie rock guitarist St. Vincent.
Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, wrote the screenplay with “Portlandia” star and fellow musician Carrie Brownstein. The film is a genre-bending mockumentary of sorts that premiered at Sundance in the Midnight section back in 2020. IFC will now release “The Nowhere Inn” later this fall.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that IFC Films has just taken North American rights to The Nowhere Inn from Topic Studios. The pic, a fractured commentary on reality, identity, and authenticity, is produced, written by, and stars Carrie Brownstein and Grammy winner Annie “St. Vincent” Clark.
