If mumblecore has a name then why isn’t there a name for films directed by actors-turned directors in their late 20s, featuring a young but recognizable cast and a soundtrack ripped from college radio? If there was such a niche, then Josh Radnor’s happythankyoumoreplease would fit comfortably in there alongside films such as Zach Braff’s directorial debut, Garden State.
Early on in Radnor’s annoyingly named film Sam Wexler (Radnor), the aimless aspiring novelist who has accidentally kidnapped/extendedly-babysat a young boy he found alone on the subway spills his writer’s frustration: “My great shame as a writer [is that] I’m a suburban kid with rich parents.” A funny line in the decidedly uninteresting fictional settings and characters that such an upbringing would yield, the irony is that this extends to the whole of happythankyoumoreplease, a...

If you called up Central Casting and requested that they send over an independent romantic comedy, Happythankyoumoreplease would be top of the stack. That's not to say that it's a perfect example of an indie rom-com, it's that it represents perfectly what a pre-conceived notion of the simplest stereotype would be. The film revolves around three different almost-thirty New Yorkers and their varying romantic entanglements. In that respect, it's kind of pedestrian, but then it's tagged with quirk like Banksy on a bender. One girl's got alopecia and wears a headwrap, one guy "accidentally" abducts a small black child and tries to raise him, everyone's managing to rent apartments in New York on the salary of a job represented by artistic endeavors. It's Woody Allen by way of Seinfeld with inexplicably coupled couples breaking into crazy indie film riffs in between make-out sessions. It's a strange film, and it wouldn't...

Happythankyoumoreplease unfolds in familiarly quirky, coming-of-age indie territory. Yet, despite its propensity for clichés and occasionally sappy tone, as exemplified by the film’s tagline – “go get yourself loved” – there’s an uncomfortable honesty at the heart of writer-director-star Josh Radnor’s first behind-the-camera effort. Somehow, the manifold plot devices (alopecia, photography, a cute foster kid) never detract from the picture’s winning evocation of the peculiar status of life spent as a struggling twenty-something, barely afloat in New York City. Radnor’s script is well-attuned to the lonely disorientation of being young and less than wealthy in the increasingly gentrified, high-end Big Apple and the daunting soul-searching that comes with the realization that maybe you were never meant to make it. The film co-opts the interconnected storyline template to provide a snapshot of young adulthood in the big city. Radnor plays Sam Wexler, an accomplished author of short stories struggling with the transition to novel-writing. One...

Title: Happythankyoumoreplease Director: Josh Radnor Starring: Josh Radnor, Malin Ackerman, Kate Mara, Michael Algieri, Zoe Kazan, Pablo Schreiber, Richard Jenkins “Happythankyoumoreplease “ is 2010’s “(500) Days of Summer. “ Which translates to a rewarding and intelligent piece of cinema. We say 2010, for it originally debuted at Sundance in that year, and managed to work its way into select theaters. So it’s kind of strange that the flick is once again being released in a very limited capacity in 2011. Strange because its timely themes are delivered in an award-winning manner. So why the delay for the 2010 Sundance audience award winner? Actor Josh Radnor [...]...

Josh Radnor, the writer-director-actor of, happythankyoumoreplease, has a day job: he stars on the hit CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. (Radnor plays the titular “I”— perhaps the most famous “I” in pop-culture since Withnail & I.)
happythankyoumoreplease is an immensely likeable New York ensemble film about young people trying to negotiate love and responsibility, and its Audience Award win at Sundance in 2010 marks Radnor, who makes his directorial debut with the movie, as a filmmaker to watch.
happythankyoumoreplease features a number of outstanding performances by actors including Malin Akerman, Tony Hale, Zoe Kazan, Kate Mara, Pablo Schreiber, Michael Algieri, and, of course, Josh Radnor.
The film opens in select theaters this weekend.
Filmmaker: Can you tell me about how you came to write the script for happythankyoumoreplease?
Radnor: I didn’t write it to become a film director. I wrote it to give myself a great film acting opportunity.

It's always been a bit surprising to me that the actor who's made the smallest splash thanks to his role on "How I Met Your Mother" is leading man Josh Radnor.
Sure, we all know it's Neil Patrick Harris who makes the show great, the adorable relationship between Lily and Marshall that provides its emotional center, and Robin Sparkles' sporadic appearances that crack us up, but the show is about Radnor's character Ted Mosby's quest for true love. And yet Radnor hasn't broken out in Hollywood since the show premiered in 2005.
Well that might be changing this year. The first theatrical trailer for his film "Happythankyoumoreplease" -- which he directed, wrote and stars in -- hit the Web today, and it actually looks pretty great. When the film premiered at Sundance last January, it won raves and the festival's prestigious Audience Award. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

As a long time How I Met Your Mother fan, I've spent a few years watching Josh Radnor, who plays Ted Mosby, grow as an actor. In the shows six season-long run, Radnor has developed significantly, hitting on both the comedic and dramatic aspects of his character. Because of this progress, my interest was peaked when I learned that Josh Radnor the actor was turning into Josh Radnor the writer/director with an indie film called Happythankyoumoreplease that was shown at last year's Sundance Film Festival. My interest rose even more when I learned that the film took home the audience award in the drama category, and now, with the film due out in March, we have the first trailer, courtesy of Apple. In the film, Radnor plays Sam, a writer, who one day sees a little boy named Rasheen (Michael Algieri) get separated from his parents on the subway.

I'm writing about this film because it was one of my favorites from Sundance this year, but it's having some distribution troubles. Deadline says that the original distributor, Hannover House, who picked up the film in March, has given up the rights to Anchor Bay Films instead, who will still release it in theaters. The film I'm talking about is Josh Radnor's HappyThankYouMorePlease, a romantic comedy of sorts that won the Audience Award at Sundance. The film stars Radnor, of "How I Met Your Mother" fame, as well as Kate Mara, Malin Akerman, Zoe Kazan, and others, like 9-year-old Michael Algieri (who plays a key role). In addition to starring in the film, HappyThankYouMorePlease was written, directed and produced by Josh Radnor. It's kind of an ensemble film with a few different stories, but the main focus is on an unsuccesful author named Sam (Radnor) who accidentally ends up...

At the 2010 Gasparilla International Film Festival, one of the themes going through my mind was, "So many films, so little time." Every night, the festival had at least one or two features that highlighted the night. Screening before each feature length flick were shorts (films 20 minutes or less). Many of those were produced right here in Tampa. We'll get to those later this week.
Being a movie reviewer and apart of critic associations, all the new releases come my way. What you may not know is that many of these wide releases one sees in the theater, started out in film festivals just like the ones being discussed here. Instead of doing the usual formal review that my readers have become accustomed to. We are giving these flicks the capsule review treatment. Hopefully a formal review will happen if these flicks get picked up by studios for a wide distribution.

At Sundance you will see a few films by first time writers/directors, sometimes they hit and sometimes they miss. With Happythankyoumoreplease we already knew that Josh Radnor could act, since he is one of my favorite characters on How I Met Your Mother. I wasn’t sure how he would fare as a writer/director but after the screening I knew that Radnor was the real deal and we would definitely be seeing more of him behind the camera.

Being a kind hearted guy, he takes the boy, Rasheen, with him with the intention of dropping him off at the police station. One thing leads to another and Rasheen comes with...

While our Sundance home page is the place for all our coverage from Park City, here is a brief rundown of what's been going on during the last 24 hours, including reviews of "Catfish," "Nowhere Boy," "Please Give," and "HappyThankYouMorePlease."
Alison Willmore enjoyed the documentary that's become the talk of the festival, "Catfish," which premiered in the Spotlight section. Here's an excerpt from her (spoiler-heavy) review, which can be found in full here:
You can see why Ariel Schulman, who co-directed alongside Henry Joost (both also figure in largely on screen), started chronicling the development of his brother Nev's online friendship with Abby Pierce, an eight-year-old art prodigy living in upstate Michigan. It's adorable, it's a novelty, it's a Good Story. And you can see why Nev, a 24-year-old photographer, agrees to it. Abby reached out to him, mailing him a painting of a picture of two dancers he took for a New York paper.

Being that we couldn’t make Sundance this year we have decided to try and cover the tidbits of it anyway. We have chosen to use Twitter as our main resource for telling you what is hip, cool and worth knowing about this year’s Sundance Film Festival 2K10.
Some our close blog buddies and others are there as well, @rejects, @firstshowing, @slashfilm and @wearegeeks, so we will be looking at their tweets and some of the comments from their sites to give you the best buzz from the bloggers catching it all.
Day 1/Day 2
First off according to @firstshowing its snowing and that is almost the best part, sure its cold but according to Mr. Billington thats the best and most beautiful part. First off Alex seemed to not like Howl, a mockumentary about poet Allen Ginsberg (played by James Franco).
After Howl, everyone saw Spike Jonze’s newest short film I’m Here.

I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.
For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.
Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:
“We may even be going into a golden age for independent films, in that the technology will make it possible for the films to be made and for audiences to see them. The industry is going through a major evolutionary stage right now, there’s no doubt about that,...

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.
I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:
The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.
