Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has made the first major Hollywood deal of 2024, pre-emptively purchasing the short story package Long Lost, which has the legendary Steven Spielberg attached to produce through his company Amblin Partners.
Long Lost is a 50 page short story written by Colin Bannon, who previously wrote and directed the 2009 comedy Love Conquers Paul. Bannon will be writing the screenplay adaptation of his story, which is said to be “in the vein of What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby“. The story centers on a recently married woman whose life is upended when her husband’s long-lost wife shockingly returns after she was believed to be dead, sparking fears that she’s hatching a sinister plan to reclaim what was once hers.

Scott Speedman of The Strangers and Underworld has joined Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and Isabel May of the Yellowstone prequel series 1883 in the thriller Sunflower – and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Speedman will be playing the villain in the film!
Sunflower will mark the feature directorial debut of writer Misha Green. She and Smollett previously worked together on the TV shows Underground and Lovecraft Country. Green created Underground with Joe Pokaski and developed Lovecraft Country from the Matt Ruff novel. Her first directing credit was on an episode of Lovecraft Country.
After spending more than a decade in development hell, Sunflower is finally moving forward at Lionsgate. The screenplay Green wrote for the film was so highly regarded that it was on the Black List back in 2008. “Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Green will be making her feature directorial debut with Lionsgate’s Sunflower, and THR reports that actor Scott Speedman has been tapped to play the film’s villain.
In Sunflower, two women struggle to escape from a deranged college professor who holds them hostage on a remote sunflower farm.
Speedman joins previously announced cast members Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) and Isabel May (“1883”). Smollett and May play the two women attempting to escape the deranged college professor played by Speedman.
Green wrote the script and will also produce alongside Craig J. Flores.
“Everyone at our studio was completely drawn in by the way Misha, Jurnee, and the ‘Lovecraft Country’ team worked so confidently to create a compelling genre series – then subverted the genre and reinvented it through a new lens,” said Nathan Kahane, President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “That’s the opportunity with Sunflower. Range Media Partners has signed filmmaker Kat Wood for representation.
The U.K.-born and L.A.-based director and screenwriter was a BBC broadcast journalist before making her mark on Hollywood. Wood, who was named to Screen International’s “Stars of Tomorrow” list, has shown her proficiency as a screenwriter, setting up a high-profile genre feature every year for the last six years.
Last August, Thunder Road Pictures optioned “Enigma,” Wood’s original contemporary supernatural spy thriller. The film – which Wood will executive produce — follows British spy Emma Taylor who is suddenly tasked with hiding a mysterious and dangerous artifact that falls into her hands. The project has been described as a “reverse Indiana Jones,” meaning that the story is about someone whose job is focused on “hiding rather than finding,” thus turning traditional adventure film tropes on their head.

Action franchises feel more popular than ever before, but there still seems to be a dearth of female action stars on-screen. Alicia Vikander helped change that in 2018, packing on 12 kilograms of muscle to star in a scrappy reboot of "Tomb Raider." Compared to Angelina Jolie's two-film turn as Lara Croft, Vikander was on a completely different level. Both iterations of "Tomb Raider" have their merits, of course, but the reboot eschewed the oversexualized, mid-noughties tone that had plagued the property for years. For once, Lara Croft was free of the male gaze. That's not to say that Vikander didn't look amazing in Lara's iconic grey tank and khaki fatigues. (Those shoulders! Those abs!) But the film put as much emphasis on the character's inner world — and her harrowing origin story — as it did on her looks.
And clearly, that renewed focus paid off. "Tomb Raider" wasn't exactly a critical darling,...

Justified: City Primeval may not be the show some expected to find Aunjanue Ellis in this summer. But the draw in playing attorney Carolyn Wilder was not the Justified brand’s cult status. Instead, the original source material is what intrigued her most.

Find yourself a more interesting career path than director Ben Wheatley's, who's set to release "Meg 2: The Trench" this week. After cutting his teeth on various television shows throughout the aughts (including "Doctor Who"), Wheatley broke out among film circles with 2015's "High-Rise." The Tom Hiddleston-starring satire, perhaps best described as "'Snowpiercer' in a skyscraper," gave us our first real look at the filmmaker's distinct sensibilities when allowed the freedom to truly wild out. His follow-up, "Free Fire," gathered several of the most charismatic actors around for a single-location extended shootout that seemed to provide Wheatley with a blank check to do whatever he wanted next. That turned out to be ... the sequel to Alicia Vikander's "Tomb Raider," of all things.
Fans have remained curious about what Wheatley would've done with such an unexpected franchise play, but that wasn't meant to be as the...

It’s probably not getting an Oscar nominations anytime soon, but “The Mother” has bested Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” where it counts: Netflix viewership metrics. Jennifer Lopez’s thriller film has entered the streamer’s list of Top 10 most popular English-language films at No. 8, knocking Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour mobster epic out of the upper echelon.
Netflix announced the news on Tuesday, along with the release of viewership numbers for the week of May 29 to June 4. “The Mother,” which has streamed for four weeks after premiering on Netflix May 12, has now been watched for a total of 229.30 million total hours by Netflix subscribers. That’s enough to place it between “Extraction” (231.340 million hours) and “Purple Hearts” (228.69 million hours) on the all-time list, and bump “The Irishman,” which peaked at 214.57 million hours viewed after its first 28 days on the streamer, from the list.

Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander is finally ready to share her thoughts about Lara Croft’s future and the disappointment of watching plans for another chance to play the character go up in smoke. MGM sold the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise to Amazon Prime Video last summer, effectively killing Vikander’s chance to star in a sequel to her 2018 reboot. Rather than make a sequel to Roar Uthaug’s film, Prime Video is teaming up with writer and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Phoebe Waller-Bridge for a TV series. Amazon wants to turn Tomb Raider into an expansive franchise. While plans for the television reboot remain a mystery, Vikander is not involved.
Speaking with Variety, Vikander told the outlet she’s grateful for the chance to have played such an iconic character and would not rule out returning if asked.

Not too many film franchises stick around for more than two decades, but the insanely wild motorized antics of Fast X roar ahead without a thought of applying the brakes.
With its seemingly inexhaustible supply of madly amusing action, this high-octane extravaganza attempts, and not infrequently succeeds, in obliterating any resistance with its disarming, outrageous and self-aware injections of often-hilarious camp. It’s a sometimes jaw-dropping ride that circles the globe in its never-ending search for fresh locations and ways to up the cinematic ante; in the process, it’s able to break down and prevail over its fundamental ludicrousness. It cost a bloody a fortune (reportedly over $300 million) but will make an even bigger one.

Isabel May, whose previous credits include Alexa & Katie, Let’s Scare Julie, Run Hide Fight, I Want You Back, and the Yellowstone prequel series 1883, has signed on to join Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) in the thriller Sunflower, which is set to mark the feature directorial debut of writer Misha Green.
Green and Smollett previously worked together on the TV shows Underground and Lovecraft Country.
The story follows two young women who are held hostage in a prison-like farmhouse by a deranged college professor. As they struggle to survive,...

“Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Green will be making her feature directorial debut with Lionsgate’s Sunflower, and Deadline brings us some more casting news this week.
Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) will re-team with Misha Green and star in the film, we previously learned, and Isabel May (“1883”) has now also joined the cast.
In Sunflower, two women struggle to escape from a deranged college professor who holds them hostage on a remote sunflower farm.
The screenplay is unique, thrilling, and flat-out scary. It’s going...

Exclusive: 1883 breakout Isabel May is set to star opposite Jurnee Smollett in the thriller Sunflower, which Misha Green is directing for Lionsgate, in her feature debut.
In the film, which the studio is fast-tracking for production, two women struggle to escape from a deranged college professor who holds them hostage on a remote sunflower farm.
Green wrote the script and will produce alongside Craig Flores, with Meredith Wieck and Aaron Edmonds overseeing the project for Lionsgate. The deal was negotiated for the studio by Dan Freedman.
Best known for her role as Elsa Dutton in Paramount+’s Yellowstone prequel series 1883 created by Taylor Sheridan, May currently reprises the part as narrator of Sheridan’s follow-up Western drama 1923, which was renewed for a second season earlier this year. In Netflix’s new thriller “The Mother,” Jennifer Lopez plays a military-trained assassin with a complicated criminal past who comes out of hiding to rescue the daughter she gave up years earlier. The premise is essentially a pretext for a series of impeccably staged action sequences that director Niki Caro mounts with the same exceptional precision and professionalism that characterizes Lopez’s shooter; while you may have seen this kind of revenge plot before in the “Taken” and “John Wick” movies, you’ve never seen the gunplay and stunt driving filtered through Caro’s sensibility, and that makes all the difference.
Caro cut her teeth on fight scenes with the elegant martial arts choreography of Disney’s “Mulan,” a film that she credits with giving her the confidence to handle large-scale action. For “The Mother,” however, she wanted something different. “With this one, I just felt like it was gloves off,...

The Mother is a mutha of an intimately scaled action film, a violent female-centric drama about a hardened combat veteran who has great difficulty adapting to being anything other than a tough soldier, and that includes being a mother. Joining Kathryn Bigelow, Patty Jenkins, Gina Prince-Blythewood, Mimi Leder and the Wachowski siblings among women responsible for notable action features, Aussie director Niki Caro has delivered a film that could easily have veered into sentiment at any moment but instead remains tough as nails and doesn’t go soft at the end. The film would surely have an even greater impact on the big screen but, as it is, launched Friday on Netflix.
Perhaps no star as survived more ups and downs in her career than has Jennifer Lopez, and while her performance here mostly calls on her to be lacking anything akin to sentiment, she powers through...

Plot: A deadly female assassin comes out of hiding to protect the daughter that she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men.
Review: Since it was first announced over a year ago, I have been mildly intrigued by The Mother. With a mysterious plot featuring Jennifer Lopez as a vengeful parent, I expected this film to be a cookie-cutter action replica of John Wick and the myriad spin-offs and copycats it has spawned. Instead, this film benefits from having a gritty but realistic plot that is accentuated by bursts of violence. With a solid director and the burgeoning talent of writer Misha Green, The Mother is a solid throwback thriller that echoes the action flicks of the late 1990s. With some brutal violence and engaging character development, The Mother is a better offering than the hit-or-miss fare churned out by the Netflix machine.

Just in time for Mother's Day here comes "The Mother," an action movie where we get to watch Jennifer Lopez kill a lot of people. This is the type of actioner they used to make in the '80s and '90s, and had it been made back then it probably would've featured Steven Seagal or Jean-Claude Van Damme (it's just a little too low-rent for Arnie or Sly). Now we have Lopez stepping into the badass killer shoes, and she's fully convincing as she mows down nameless bad guys who get in her way. She's an unstoppable killing machine, and we buy it, mostly because Lopez is a good actor who clearly went through the movie rigamarole of learning how to handle firearms, lots and lots of firearms.
Lopez's character, credited only as The Mother (hell yeah), was once a military sniper. And she was good — we're told she...

Make no mistake, the title character in the enjoyably ridiculous The Mother is given no name, but there’s never any doubt that she’s Jennifer Lopez. From the runway-ready fur hoodie she sports in the Alaskan wilderness to the flawless eye makeup and dewy complexion that withstand everything from childbirth to a knife fight in the snowbound woods, this is a performance so loaded with celebrity baggage it’s never going to be fully convincing as a deadly assassin. Yet JLo of course is the chief reason to watch Niki Caro’s action thriller for Netflix, which is better than average, as star-driven streaming features go.

Jessica Chastain is sharing her autograph policy. The Oscar winner was recently captured in a viral video turning down signing a copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” novel following her performance in Broadway revival of “A Doll’s House” at the Hudson Theatre, outside of which she regularly greets fans.
“I can’t sign that, just because I’m not doing it,” Chastain says to the fan in the video. The “Molly’s Game” star later took to Twitter to explain her reasoning for declining to sign books such as these.
“I’ve been asked multiple times by fans, to sign books that I’m not attached to contractually. Because it feels wrong, and like I’m taking credit for someone else’s work, I’ll say I can’t sign because I’m not doing it,” Chastain wrote. “That doesn’t mean I’ve read a bad script.

Jennifer Lopez is the mother in the new Netflix thriller “The Mother” that the streaming service has fittingly scheduled for release on Mother’s Day weekend.
Directed by Niki Caro and written by Misha Green, Andrea Berloff, and Peter Craig, the film finds Lopez playing a deadly assassin who gives up her daughter to escape retribution following a job gone wrong. But 12 years later, Lopez’s character is thrust back into action after her daughter is kidnapped as part of a revenge plot. As Lopez says in the trailer, “I’m a killer but I’m also a mother.”
In an interview with People, Caro said she loved bringing Lopez back to the action genre.
“The only thing that surprised me was that Jennifer hadn’t been an action movie hero her entire career,” Caro said.

Jennifer Lopez plays a former assassin turned fierce mama bear who emerges from hiding in the Alaskan wilderness to protect a daughter she gave up for adoption years earlier in the official trailer for the upcoming Netflix movie The Mother.
“I’m a killer. And I’m also mother,” Lopez’s gun-toting character says at one point in the trailer while stabbing or head-butting the bad guys, or firing back from a motorcycle or snowmobile while being hotly pursued.
The latest look at director Niki Caro’s action-adventure pic opens with Lopez in a flashback giving birth to a daughter she had to give up. An FBI agent with whom she has cut a deal tells her the only way to protect her newborn from two dangerous assailants on the loose is to disappear.

If you’re coming for an assassin’s daughter, you better be ready for that assassin to come for you. Of course, that’s kind of the bad guy’s whole intention in the first trailer for the new Netflix film “The Mother.”
That assassin is played by none other than Jennifer Lopez, and apparently, she’s ruffled more than a few feathers. As the footage opens on her in a hospital bed, she’s told that, after getting several FBI agents killed, the only thing she can do to keep her daughter safe is to leave her behind.
And so, reluctantly, she does. But, as is almost always the case with dangerous assassins, her past catches up to her — and her daughter. When the girl gets kidnapped as part of an effort to lure Lopez’s character back in, she offers an ominous warning.

Jennifer Lopez is a killer and a mother in Netflix’s upcoming action movie, titled “The Mother,” coming to the streamer on (when else?) this Mother’s Day weekend.
In the newly released trailer, the international singer, dancer and actor stars as a former killer who left her old life and family behind to protect her now 12-year-old daughter. The trailer reveals that the FBI cut a deal with Lopez after several agents were killed and two dangerous men were still on the loose. After her daughter is kidnapped many years later, Lopez’s character must come out of hiding and re-enter her life to save her. Along the way, she tortures, shoots, stabs and headbutts the kidnappers’ men, and she teaches her daughter how to survive in the face of danger.
“I’m a killer, but I’m also a mother,” Lopez says in the trailer, perfectly encapsulating the film in one line.

A year and a half after Michael K. Williams’ death, the man who sold The Wire star the drugs that killed him has pleaded guilty.
“Irvin Cartagena sold fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight in New York City, feeding addiction and causing tragedy,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York said Wednesday, regarding the the September 5, 2021 transaction in Brooklyn’s South Williamsburg neighborhood. “In doing so, he dealt the fatal dose that killed Michael K. Williams.”
In front U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams earlier in the day, Cartagena pleaded guilty to “one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl analogue, fentanyl, and heroin.” That plea specifically cited the death of Williams as a consequence of Cartagena’s drug slinging. Set to be sentenced later this year, Cartagena, aka “Green Eyes,” faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 40 years on the charges.

When Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf developed a “communication model” that would pave the way to the internet, I doubt online hate groups were a part of the dream. Unfortunately, anonymity and the creation of forums where people can foster deplorable behavior exist. What if someone were to infiltrate them? Misha Green has had some bad luck recently. She was showrunner on the HBO series Lovecraft Country, which didn’t get the second season she had planned out. Then she was hired to write and make her feature directorial debut on a sequel to the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot, a project that fell apart when MGM lost the rights to the property and Amazon picked them up. But Green has also had some good luck recently. Last month, it was announced that she will be making her feature directorial debut on a thriller called Sunflower, based on a script she first wrote 15 years ago. Now Deadline has broken the news that Green will also be writing and direct a sci-fi “terror tale” called I Am Not Alone, with Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) attached to star in the film.

Film project auctions are some of the more interesting deals made in Hollywood, as you’ll see studios/streamers throwing around a lot of money to outbid each other if there is intense competition. Netflix, of course, has plenty of original movies cooking at any moment. However, they are still always putting out feelers to find just the right thing that could help coax considerable talent to attach themselves to support the marketing of it. A report from Deadline reveals that the streaming giant is closing in on a big deal to secure the film rights to a short story from Chris Hicks called “I Am Not Alone,” beating out its main rival Warner Bros.

Even the weekend of Hollywood’s biggest party couldn’t stop film industry dealmakers from fighting over the latest horror project. “I Am Not Alone,” a new horror film that’s set to star Jessica Chastain, became the subject of a heated bidding war before reportedly landing at Netflix.
The project, which will be directed by “Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Green, is based on a short story by fiction writer Chris Hicks. The mysterious story centers around a mother who begins to hallucinate deadly creatures when she suffers from migraines.
It marks the first major Hollywood project for the writer, who is best known for writing viral horror stories on the NoSleep subreddit. (And it’s the latest example of horror artists finding alternative paths to break into the industry). After spending years building up a following in the online horror fiction community, he’s now branching out into feature...

Exclusive: If some film executives have looked a bit distracted at the agency Oscar parties tonight, it’s because they were waging a rather breathtaking auction for I Am Not Alone, a 22-page short story by Chris Hicks that is an ideal template for a major genre film. The dust is just settling, but I am hearing that Netflix is closing up a high-six-figure deal for an outright buy of the story, with mid-seven figures pledged to Lovecraft Country’s Misha Green to write the script and direct as a star vehicle for Oscar winner Jessica Chastain.
Five bidders chased this one over 72 hours, and it came down to Netflix and Warner Bros. A big reason for the outcome is that Green wanted this to be with a streamer.
