While it may not be as prevalent as it once was, the Western refuses to go away. It’s genre that has evolved in the face of its waning popularity, clear cut battle of white hats against the back hats giving way to an entire deconstruction of the genre, and now recent years have seen a rise in movies celebrating the Western, from the knowing homage of Django Unchained or a loving tribute in the vain of The Salvation. Now, John McLean wades in with his directorial debut, Slow West, taking the spirit of the genre and giving it a spin all this own. A founding member of Scottish experimental musical group The Beta Band, McLean’s breaths an air of the eccentric into the familiar tale of Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit McPhee), a young immigrant who has travelled from “the cold shoulder of Scotland to the baking heart of...

Leo Burnett Sydney has appointed John McLean to executive digital producer of the Integrated Production Unit. McLean joins from Clemenger Bbdo Sydney.
The announcement:
Further bolstering its digital capabilities, Leo Burnett Sydney has appointed acclaimed producer, John McLean, as Executive Digital Producer, working across Canon, Diageo, EnergyAustralia, Gio and eBay.
While the term “award winning creative” is familiar, particularly with Cannes recent in many of our memories, “award winning producer” is less usual. As the producer of some of Australia’s most innovative and awarded digital campaigns with accolades at Cannes, D&Ad, One Show, Adfest, Aimia and Iab, John has certainly earned this title.
Before making the move to Leo Burnett John was Executive Digital Producer at Clemenger Bbdo Sydney, and prior to that he held the role of Digital Producer at Droga5 Sydney.
During his career, John has worked on some of the world’s most recognised brands,...

It’s difficult to comprehend why an American Football event excites me so much because, contrary to what my ultra-macho physique and demeanour give off, American Football is of complete disinterest to me. Maybe because when I was 11 years old and I was 4 ft 10 and 6 stone I was made to compete with the actual rugby team in Pe and after my spine reattachment surgery was over I was put off homoerotic contact sport until it resembled me going all John McLean on those Rugby jocks with a baseball bat, but also because the whole format of play resembles something only Michael Bay would call ‘entertainment’:
1 Minute of testosterone pumped screaming and running around whilst people fall over and yell things aggressively.
6 minutes of congratulating each other you did that whilst half naked women dance around and the crowd try their best to justify their own continuing existence.
Repeat.
However,...

Lover's rock influenced the Police and Sade, and gave women a voice in reggae – so why was it sidelined in its native Britain?
In 1979, Janet Kay's piercing falsetto was one of the defining sounds of the summer. Silly Games, her bittersweet ode to a faltering relationship, enjoyed heavy radio play, thanks in part to a subtle arrangement by songwriter/producer Dennis Bovell, a distinctive drum pattern from Aswad's Angus Gaye and distribution on a Warners subsidiary. The song reached No 2, the highest chart placing for a black, British woman at that point. It also signalled a coming of age for lover's rock, the softened, British reggae sub-genre that focused on romance, but, as noted in Menelik Shabazz's documentary The Story of Lover's Rock, involved so much more than setting teenaged heartbreak to a reggae beat.

These are the highways to hell. For the second straight year, The Daily Beast ranks the roads with the worst rush hour gridlock. How does your commute rank?
More than merely expensive, long commutes are mentally debilitating. They're also completely, absolutely avoidable. With that in mind, The Daily Beast set out to determine, for the second consecutive year, which cities have the worst commutes-and specifically, which stretches of road within each city experience the worst congestion.

To find America's Highways from Hell, we started with newly released data from traffic-tracking firm Inrix, which culls data from 4 million vehicles nationwide using Gps units and a smartphone application.
We pared and ranked our top 50 worst metropolitan areas for traffic for 2010 using Inrix's Travel Time Tax-the percentage of time it takes to navigate the area's roadways...

Robert Schwentke's Red comes at a bit of an inopportune time. This year has seen a surprising overload of "group of killers and their hijinks" movies -- The Losers, The Expendables, Operation: Endgame, The A-Team -- all movies about with very similar concepts. They're all humorous films about assassins/government operatives/mercenaries who get betrayed in some fashion, and are forced to gather together and shoot people and blow things up in an effort to clear their name. Being the last one on the list doesn't help things, either. That said, Red has a few things going for it. It's easily the most talented cast, the premise is a little more original, and it's tongue-in-cheek humor is a little less broad and a little more clever.
That doesn't make it a great movie, however. The story is simple enough -- the CIA has retired Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), one of their greatest operatives,...
