Over the last seven years, The San Francisco Film Society (now known simply at Sffilm) has become one the largest nonprofit supporters of independent and documentary film having doled out over $800,000 to individual films in 2016. With targeted and flexible filmmaking grants the SFFilm Maker program has been able to give individual films a significant financial boost when they need it most – ranging from before the script is written all the way to the sound mix.

Having played a critical role in successful films like “Short Term 12,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Fruitvale Station” getting made, Sffs’s support has also come to signal to the rest of the film world that a project is worth tracking.

The San Francisco Film Society has announced today that the 60th San Francisco International Film Festival’s anticipated Centerpiece event will be “Patti Cake$,” from first-time feature director Geremy Jasper. The film bowed at Sundance in January, featuring a star-making turn from Danielle Macdonald as the eponymous rapper Patricia “Patti Cake$” Dombrowski.
The film was purchased at the festival by Fox Searchlight, who paid a healthy $9.5 million for the feature. “Patti Cake$” was a Spring 2014 Sf Film Society / Krf Filmmaking Grant winner.
“We are thrilled that Patti Cake$,’ a film we supported in partnership with Kenneth Rainin Foundation, will be the Festival’s Centerpiece,” said Noah Cowan, Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Society. “The film is not only hugely entertaining, with great music and spectacular performances, but also deftly addresses issues of great importance in our current political climate, from the harsh social conditions faced by working-class families...

Zion Harvey, the first kid in the world to get a double hand transplant, got to show how well his new hands are working in a very public way Tuesday night. He threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Baltimore Orioles-Texas Rangers game at Oriole Park. The pitch was to Orioles center fielder Adam Jones. The 9-year-old did not do any media interviews. Harvey, who lives in Owings Mills, Maryland, with his mother, lost his hands and feet to sepsis when he was 2 years old. His mother, Patti Henry, donated one of her kidneys to him when he was four.

Dance music personality cult Bassnectar took the internet by storm this week, dropping a surprise announcement that a new album titled Unlimited would be released on June 3. While that release date has now been pushed back to June 17, the revered producer is making up for the delay by sharing four new cuts off the upcoming record, including one that features electronic trio The Glitch Mob.
“Reaching Out” kicks off the collection of new music, opening with dreamy arpeggios and squelchy bass sounds that lead into a trap section with hard hitting 808 beats. Bassnectar keeps things ethereal on “Reaching Out,” focusing on trippy sound design and mid range grooves to carry the track.
Elsewhere, Luzcid assists on “Music Is The Drug,” which features the same sort of hip-hop inspired rhythms from the last cut and should definitely leave fans pleased.
Next up is “Tko,” which features guests Rye Rye and Zion I...

If there’s a problem with Lorin Ashton A.K.A. Bassnectar releasing what he calls a “mixtape” instead of an album, it’s that his actual albums have already set the bar pretty high.
It’s by no accident that he’s amassed a greater following than almost any other bass music artist in the world, after all. His layered and borderline metaphysical style of electronic music has found its way to his devoted fan base in the form of dozens of albums since his 2001 debut, each of which he finely tunes to a neurotic extent. As such, on the off occasion that he breaks the pattern to put together what amounts to a hobby album of sorts he must expect some measure of disapproval from fans.
And to be fair, it seems that he did. In a Rolling Stone interview that came out around the time he released...

Touring hip-hop festival Rock the Bells announced its roster of talent scheduled to hit the stage this summer. The list strikes the right balance with a blend of old-school favorites like Ice Cube, Naughty By Nature, and Salt-n-Pepa and next-generation performers like Tyga, Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa and Yelawolf.
The most interesting addition for this year is probably DJ Lance Rock and Friends from the Nick Jr. show "Yo Gabba Gabba!" (You know, for all the 3-year-olds in attendance.)
Festival stops include the Nos Events Center in San Bernardino, Calif. on Aug. 18 and 19, Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Calif. on Aug. 25 and 26, and Pnc Bank Arts Center in Homdel, N.J. on Sept. 1 and 2. Tickets go on sale May 19.

We received news this morning that the legendary Guru has joined the trailblazers who inspired him. Although we are not currently representing him, 4Sight Media was selected as the publicity firm to handle the publicity for his last three projects in the Jazzmatazz series.
While 7Grand and Solar are handling their publicity internally with several messages that have been released (including Guru's last statement), we wanted to offer our own deepest sympathy to the fans of Guru who support the Jazzmatazz legacy around the world. We honor Guru for leaving us with music that reaches into higher places, for coloring outside the lines of hip-hop and recognizing the musical masters who inspired him. Through Guru's eyes, there was no division between hip-hop and jazz, hip-hop and neo-soul or hip-hop and history.
Guru's Jazzmatazz and endeavors with Premier enabled him to collaborate with a who's who...

Having the same emcee name as the group you are in can sometimes lead to confusion. Just ask Zumbi.
“My name used to be just Zion,” explains Zion I emcee Zumbi,” but then I’d be releasing mix tapes and doing features with other people, and when they would put the credits on the track it would always say Zion I, which wasn’t the case. Zion I is Amp and myself. People were having trouble signifying the difference. So I changed it because things got real confusing, man. I changed my name to Zumbi because that is the name of a man who was a guerilla leader against slavery in Brazil.”
Confusion aside, Zion I is an Oakland-based hip hop group composed of DJ/producer Amp Live and emcee Zumbi. Since their first release, Mind Over Matter (2000), they have been erasing the borders that have separated up-tempo electronic, independent hip hop,...
