Lauren Lapkus (Crashing) and Krysta Rodriguez (Just One Kiss) have landed lead roles in the upcoming CBS multi-camera comedy pilot Sober Companion. According to Variety, Rodriguez will play Eliza, a fun-loving and quick-witted alcoholic who runs a bookstore/bar in New Orleans with her uncle. After getting in trouble with the law one too many times, Eliza is assigned a court-appointed “sober companion” who will force her to confront her demons, get her life together, and stay sober. Lapkus will play Eliza’s sober companion, Shelley, a joyful, high-spirited oddball. While her non-stop enthusiasm and unconventional methods aren’t to everybody’s taste, she’s the best at what she does — even if she drives Eliza crazy in the process. Sober Companion is written and executive produced by Gracie Glassmeyer and David Rosenthal. Jennie Snyder Urman co-wrote the story with them and is exec producing under her Sutton Street Productions banner alongside Joanna Klein.

Krysta Rodriguez (Halston) and Lauren Lapkus (Good Girls) have been tapped as the leads in CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot Sober Companion, from Jane the Virgin creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman and CBS Studios, where Urman is under an overall deal.
Written by Gracie Glassmeyer and David Rosenthal from a story they co-wrote with Urman, Sober Companion revolves around Eliza (Rodriguez), a hot-mess alcoholic who owns a bookstore/bar with her uncle in New Orleans and who is forced to get her life together when the court appoints her an exhaustingly upbeat sober companion, Shelley (Lapkus), with whom she has to live 24/7.
The comedy was originally set up at Fox during the 2013-2014 cycle where it went to a single-camera pilot with Justin Long in the title role and Nick Frost as the co-lead. The project, which was written by Urman and Rosenthal, didn’t make it past the pilot...

“Call Me Kat” actress Schuyler Helford’s teen-parenting comedy “Unplanned in Akron” has received a pilot order at CBS.
Written by Helford with Emily Wilson (“The Conners”) supervising, the multi-cam project follows two teenagers navigating parenthood in the best way they know how. With a little help from their friends and parents, they’ll learn that mistakes in life don’t have to derail your life – that no matter what age you are, taking care of a child is no joke – but sometimes, you just gotta laugh (or cry) your way through it.
Helford is co-executive producing the potential series. Wilson is an executive producer along with Samie Falvey and Erik Feig for PictureStart, and Chris Mills and Chris Emerson for Authentic.
“Unplanned in Akron” hails from CBS Studios.
The project marks the fourth comedy pilot order at CBS this development season. The others are “Rust Belt News” from Matt Warburton,...

CBS is going back into the vault for one of its latest comedy pilots.
The network has ordered two comedy pilots – Sober Companion, a project that previously went to pilot starring Justin Long, and The Hug Machine, directed by Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone.
Sober Companion is exec produced by Jane The Virgin creator/exec producer Jennie Snyder Urman.
The multi-camera comedy, which comes from CBS Studios, was originally set up at Fox in 2014 with Long in the title role and Nick Frost as the co-lead. However, the project, which was originally written by Urman and David Rosenthal, didn’t make it past the pilot stage and has now been retooled through a female lens.
The Long role – he played Jeremy in the original – has turned into Eliza, a hot-mess alcoholic who owns a bar with her uncle in New Orleans, but is forced to get her life together when...

Exclusive: Range Media Partners has locked 17 more clients for the new management/production company. This comes as its lineup of ground floor partners has changed as Lucinda Moorhead, who left UTA to join Range, has decided she will instead stay with the agency and not join the upstart venture.

On the talent side, Range Media Partners has signed Alessandro Nivola, Alyssa Milano, Andrew Lincoln, Eric Singer, Shea Whigham, and Vincent Cassell. Also coming are filmmakers Baltasar Kormakur, Gareth Edwards; The Raid: Redemption director Gareth Evans (who continues to be repped by Management 360); Jc Chandor; Patrick Hughes (The Hitman’s Bodyguard); Ric Roman Waugh; and Martin Zandvliet.
On the TV writer/producer side, the new clients are Jackie Clarke; Gracie Glassmeyer; Rene Gube; and Rosa Handelman.
They join an original influx of clients that includes Naomi Ackie, Michael Bay, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Jessie Buckley, Jerrod Carmichael, Emilia Clarke, Bradley Cooper, Johnny Depp, Taron Egerton, Michael Fassbender, Luca Guadagnino, Tom Hardy, Stephan James, Anna Kendrick, Taylor Kitsch, Keira Knightley, Danny McBride/Rough House Pictures, Martin McDonagh, Michael Shannon and Ramy Youssef.
We hear that Moorhead’s deal with Range did not close and that UTA made her a strong offer to stay at the agency.
The exit of Moorhead means that the ground floor partners at Range Media Partners are Dave Bugliari, Mackenzie Condon Roussos, Rich Cook, Michael Cooper, Susie Fox, Matt Graham, Sandra Kang, Rachel Kropa, Chelsea McKinnies, Peter Micelli, Mick Sullivan, Byron Wetzel, and Jack Whigham.

The Little Mermaid isn’t so little anymore in a new Peacock series… and she’s not so happy, either.
The forthcoming streaming service is developing Washed Up, a sequel series that puts a comedic spin on the classic fairy tale-turned-Disney film, our sister site Deadline reports. Picking up 15 years after the original story, the single-camera comedy finds the former mermaid “now miserable, unmotivated and in a loveless marriage. In other words, just a basic bitch human,” according to the official description. “But when her father suddenly dies, she suspects foul play and embarks on an epic adventure to save...

A “Little Mermaid” sequel series could be headed to streaming, but not the place you would expect.
The series, titled “Washed Up,” is in development at Peacock. It is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” the Danish fairy tale that the better-known Disney animated classic is loosely based on.
The original story, first published in 1837, is much darker than the Disney-fied version but still follows the same basic story of a young mermaid princess who dreams of becoming human. However, in Andersen’s tale, the young princess kills herself at the end, though she ends up turning into an ethereal spirit.
