"Orange Is the New Black" is the new thing to watch. The Netflix series chronicling the daily highs and lows of life as an incarcerated woman has charmed critics with its well-balanced servings of humor, heartbreak and above all, humanity.
But if the phrase "is the new" sounds familiar to you, that's because, of course, it is. "[Blank] is the new black" originated in the fashion world, and nascent uses came in the early '80s in the Los Angeles Times. (A late-'70s version, from the New York Times: "Colors are the new neutrals.")
The entertainment world loves "is the new," too. You could even say that "Orange is the New Black" is the new "is the new." Take a look at some other examples below, and let us know if you think "Orange is the New Black" is the best "is the new" in the comments.

I know several of you out there, like I, have gotten somewhat lax with your Cannonball Read 2 reviews and/or reading. You've got other things that need to get done, you were too tired to read, you couldn't find anything interesting to read, whatever. You had your reasons. Looking at tonight's schedule I can nearly assure you that there is nothing tonight to distract you from writing up those reviews or diving into a new book. In fact, I encourage all you readers out there to share recommendations in the comments. Here is Monday night's really unremarkable TV:
8:00 p.m.: "The Bachelorette" on ABC
"Behind the Music: Dmx" on VH1. It says second season premiere, but that's a flat lie because I know that "Behind the Music" has been around since I was young and impressionable.
"Last Comic Standing" on NBC. Two hour seventh season premiere.
"Lie to Me" on Fox.

Did everybody enjoy that little vacation? After a quiet week that saw several shows extend their Memorial Day weekends into extra-strength vacations, the entire late night slate is back with a vengeance this week (save for "Last Call with Carson Daly," which won't be back for at least another month). The push to promote big-time blockbuster movies (you'll be seeing a lot of cast members from "The A-Team" this week) as well as high-profile summer tours (Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair re-launch) and album releases (Christina Aguilera's Bionic is back on, which means the after-hours shift is going to be heating up.
The guests on David Letterman's couch this week include "American Idol" winner Lee DeWyze (Monday, June 7), Lilith Fair mastermind and headliner Sarah McLachlan (Tuesday, June 8), "A-Team" star Bradley Cooper and pop diva Christina Aguilera (Wednesday, June 9) and "The Karate Kid" star (and Justin Bieber collaborator) Jaden Smith (Thursday,...

Listening to Australian musician Sia with her full, dramatic voice can sound at times so dark, it can give you the wrong idea about her bubbly personality. When you see pictures of her or hear her talk, you want to put on a smock and finger-paint with her while doing the hokey-pokey, drinking Mr. Pibb and watching Saturday morning cartoons.
Through the years, Sia’s music has constantly changed directions and it wasn’t until recently, with the release of the first single, "You've Changed," from her upcoming album We Are Born that it seems she's finally hit her stride.
AfterEllen.com talked with Sia about her new album, working with Christina Aguilera and her hopes to eventually marry her partner, Jd Samson.

Norway duo adds depth, dramatic arc to delicate pop pace Kings of Convenience have always had a tight grip on their delicate acoustic sound. However, Declaration of Dependence offers a sense of cohesion their previous albums don’t, a complete story through melody. The slow awakening of “24-25” warms up the listener before the fluttering “Me in You,” which segues gracefully into the lively sway of “Boat Behind.” “Rule My World” begins the descent toward conclusion, though the melancholic pulse of “Renegade” and offbeat vocals of “Second to Numb” still pique and captivate....

Kings of Convenience Declaration of Dependence (Emi) Kings of Convenience are a peculiar duo: two unabashedly romantic dudes from Norway who play dreamy folk songs perfect for a chilly Sunday afternoon. Lead singer Erlend ÿye, who looks like Napoleon Dynamite, sings in a calming whisper that is both sad and erotic. Declaration of Dependence, the group’s fourth record, shares with its predecessors plenty of lulling acoustic guitars, tender string arrangements, and awesomely lurid love songs. Verdict: Buy it...

Apparently, Norwegian duo Kings Of Convenience -- which comprises Eirik Bøe and Erlend Øye -- got to writing their new full-length "Declaration Of Dependence" as they sat on the beach in Mexico somehwere in 2007. We're sure that the beach was very beautiful, and indeed relaxing. They were likely surrounded by people they love, plus a bunch of pretty, tall models pulsing to the beats of the ocean. Because that's precisely what Kings Of Convenience's music sounds like. The album is their third, and their first in four years since "Riot On An Empty Street"; it will be released Oct. 20....
