It’s not often a soundtrack for a film can be considered a spoiler, but considering the ways in which music is crucial to the foundation of Edgar Wright‘s Baby Driver, consider this a fair warning. Although the action/musical/crime/comedy/thriller won’t hit theaters for another five months, it premiered at SXSW last weekend (where it was rapturously received), and an eagle-eared listener has collated the soundtrack on Spotify.
There’s of course Simon & Garfunkel‘s title track, along with songs from Queen, Run the Jewels, Boards of Canada, Barry White, The Damned, The Beach Boys, Blur, and even a famous Disney song. Considering the film’s action is choreographed to the music choices — tied to the tinnitus Ansel Elgort‘s character is afflicted with and therefore battles with a constant stream of songs — we’d imagine discovering this playlist in the theater is the best experience,...

Back in December, deadmau5 revealed that he would be holding down a residency at BBC Radio 1 in 2017. Now, the producer’s debuted his first mix for the residency, delivering a solid two-hour playlist that sports an eclectic selection of tunes.
Deadmau5’s latest mix is definitely an interesting one for the outspoken musician. While a number of house and techno cuts from Pryda, Lane 8, Attlas and the mau5 himself pop up across the two hour program, some unexpected offerings are included as well, including Boards Of Canada’s “Satellite Anthem Icarus”, Tycho’s “Epoch” and Jon Hopkins’ “Lost In Thought.” It’s a side of deadmau5 that we don’t often get to hear, and definitely makes for a compelling listen.
With a diverse array of genres represented and some skillful mixing, deadmau5’s first offering for his BBC Radio 1 residency is a strong start for the producer. Considering the quality of his inaugural broadcast,...

While Edm mastermind deadmau5 has been hitting SoundCloud pretty hard over the last several months with a constant stream of demos, the ever popular producer marked his first official release in two years today, dropping his latest single, “Snowcone.”
The song sees deadmau5 stepping back from the progressive house trappings that have dominated the bulk of his output, exploring hip hop style beats and a warbly, ambient backing track. In fact, the new single seems to take some influence from Boards of Canada (who he’s made nods to in the past) with its mellow production and woozy sound.
The latest mau5 single had previously been heard in April, and was dropped as a surprise without prior warning. Between the release of “Snowcone” and the constant flow of SoundCloud demos he’s been posting, we may well be on the verge of a new deadmau5 album, which would finally close...

Within my top 10, there's only one new artist. Inside my top 30, there's about 10. Electronic music had a huge year with the return of Daft Punk, but also with new artist Disclosure, Jon Hopkins' career masterpiece "Immunity, and efforts from others like Boards of Canada, Juana Molina, Baths and Fuck Buttons. You don't see a lot of rock in the top tiers of the Grammy nominations for 2014, and as loathe as I am to say it, I gotta say I feel almost (almost) the same way. I've loved the work that Mbv, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Portugal. The...

Cinema Retro has received the following press release:
Death Waltz Recording Company and Paint It Black are proud to present Fabio Frizzi live for his first ever UK show to be held at The Union Chapel on October 31st. The perfect setting will play host to Frizzi, accompanied by his 7-piece band and with an additional string section (the F2F Orchestra), for what promises to be a very special evening’s performance and master-class in soundtrack composition. Rather than performing individual tracks from his catalogue, Frizzi will be presenting his works in newly commissioned suites, which he is currently finishing back in Rome with the F2F Orchestra.
Through the superb reissue work of labels like Death Waltz, Italian soundtracks are becoming extremely sought after and essential recordings to own, recognized for their incredible dimensions of sound. From the early 1960s through to the early 1980s, and helped by...

Boards Of Canada’s entire catalog is being reissued on vinyl. In the wake of the duo’s new Tomorrow’s Harvest from earlier this year, all of its previous full-length albums—2005’s The Campfire Headphase, 2002’s Geogaddi, and 1998’s Music Has The Right To Children—will be available again on vinyl on Oct. 21, after years of absence that have caused original editions to become highly prized, very expensive collector's items. They'll be followed by vinyl reissues of the 1995 mini-album Twoism and its two EPs, 2000’s In A Beautiful Place Out In ...

Elijah Wood is a delight.
The "Lord of the Rings" actor took to Reddit Thursday to hold an Ama ("Ask Me Anything"), and it reads like he was just chatting with buddies -- none of that "too cool" celebrity arrogance.
Example number one -- he loves Labradoodles:
I would like a dog. I particularly love Labradoodles, which is not exactly the most masculine name of a dog to say - "i want to get a labradoodle!" doesn't exactly sound awesome. But they are beautiful dogs. I love cats too, for the record - I know that people are usually either dog people or cat people, but I am animal ambidextrous.
Also, he still gets nervous for auditions and gave great advice to a fan trying to overcome fear of them. "I find that sometimes, if I articulate that I'm a little nervous, it helps. I also find that to find...

It’s not enough anymore to just stream a new album a week early on iTunes. Kanye West is premiering new tracks off Yeezus on the sides of buildings. Daft Punk premiered Random Access Memories in remote Wee Waa, Australia. And next week, after hosting a preview in an abandoned waterpark in the Mojave Desert, Boards Of Canada will be streaming the new Tomorrow's Harvest online just once, and then that’s it. Billed as a “live album transmission,” the glorified listening party happens this coming Monday, June 3, at 4 p.m. Est, and at the corresponding hour ...

The lead-up to Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" has proven the robots and Columbia Records to be masters of hype. There were rumors upon rumors, most of which turned out to be true in some weird and twisted way (case in point: Daft Punk was at Coachella, but just to walk around in their civvies and watch the crowd react to a trailer for "Get Lucky").
But building up expectations often comes with plenty of risks. When the album arrives in stores on May 17, it will easily be the most-hyped record of the year. A few critics got an early listen of the project, and though most admit they need to spend more time with the album, here's what they have to say.
Over at MTV, James Montgomery writes that the record "is not a reinvention so much as it is a revolution; their attempt to liberate themselves from dance music entirely.

After teasing mild fans and obsessives alike with a cryptic series of numbers, ridiculously exclusive Records Store Day releases, and Adult Swim commercials, Boards Of Canada has finally—finally!—officially announced a new record. Tomorrow’s Harvest is out June 10 and is the group’s first release since 2005’s The Campfire Headphase. A full tracklist is below. The group released the news via its newly launched website, Cosecha Transmisiones, where fans can use that 36-number sequence Boc has recently released to access new album art and all the details listed above. Eight years after The Campfire Headphase, Boards Of Canada is teasing a new album. Probably. What is definite is that the group released a single 12-inch record for this past weekend’s Record Store Day—that is to say, it released one, single, solitary record, only made available in one store in the entire nation. An employee of Boards Of Canada’s label, Warp, reportedly hand-delivered that record to New York’s Other Music on Friday, and it got slipped into the racks for Saturday, when a lucky fan snatched it up. Five other copies of the record were covertly ...

Brian Hodgson: inventor of the Tardis dematerialisation noise (included on this disc), techbod for the original Dalek voices, and ambient soundscape purveyor to the stars. His legacy lives on in the current iteration of the Radiophonic Workshop, and restoration work by Mark Ayres. YouTube footage of a 'reunion gig' from 2009 can and should be searched for.

For decades, shortwave broadcasts have repeated various series of numbers spoken by men, women, children, and sometimes computers. The point of origin for these broadcasts has come to be known as a numbers station — some of which are still operational.
In the trailer for The Numbers Station, the mystery of these one of these stations is unraveled. A rebellious special agent (John Cusack) and a pretty civilian (Malin Ackerman) are trapped inside the numbers station, forced to decipher the numbers to save the world. Looks like lots of good car chases, explosions, and definitely some down-to-the-wire code cracking.

Sinister scored big last weekend at the box office, and for good reason: it's seriously scary, in all the right ways. (If you haven't had a chance to see it, be sure to catch it this weekend, and beware of mild spoilers below.) When I first saw the film at Fantastic Fest, I was haunted by the amazing score by Christopher Young (Hellraiser) and the unsettling sound design by Dane Davis... and although I didn't know it at the time, an assortment of original music by many experimental bands and dark ambient music artists. Director Scott Derrickson has revealed to us that impressive lineup, and how he discovered them. FEARnet: How did you arrive at your decision to use existing tracks from experimental bands for certain scenes? Scott: I decided very early on that I wanted the Super 8 films to play full screen with music. I spent several long days,...

Sinister
Directed by: Scott Derrickson
Cast: Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, James Ransone
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: Oct 12, 2012
Plot: A true-crime author’s (Hawke) obsession with a family’s gruesome murder case is heightened by his discovery of film reels that show other frightening events.
Who’S It For? If you’re on the hunt for a movie with truly scary moments, you’ve found it with Sinister. This is one that dares those who have been exhausted by softball mainstream horror to see if they can keep a straight, non-terrified facial expression throughout.
Expectations: Aware that this was co-written by film critic C. Robert Cargill, I was curious as to what relation this movie might have with filmgoing. Would it be like a more serious version of The Cabin in the Woods? And for the record, this is one movie I opted out of seeing...

In addition to his more dance-floor-ready work as half of Ford & Lopatin, Daniel Lopatin also makes ambient music that could score a thousand gonzo Ambien-dreams as Oneohtrix Point Never. It’s difficult music to describe, but it’s decidedly easy to digest—especially when compared to Opn’s earlier experiments in arpeggiated drone, which recall Tangerine Dream and label-mate Emeralds. Where 2010’s Returnal opened with a scene of bedlam worthy of Kevin Drumm’s Sheer Hellish Miasma, Replica begins gingerly, setting the mood with some alien-yet-inviting, Boards Of Canada-sounding tones. Unlike the similarly iterative The Field, Opn builds its ...

Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide. Apparat and Modeselektor are two of the leading names in Berlin’s thriving commingling of left-field techno and glitch, so the arrival of the portmanteau Moderat is akin to the launch of a Coke/Pepsi hybrid. Naturally, Moderat finds its constituent parts striking a balance between their respective areas of expertise, but more importantly, Moderat’s songs occupy new ground—a territory where the spacious warmth of ambient music and the claustrophobic chill that typifies dubstep can live in harmony. The opener, “A New Error,” begins with sun-warped tones à la Boards Of Canada, is carried forth on a heavy bass-synth ...
