Four survivor-led advocacy organizations — including those founded by former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife and filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom — published a letter and report on Wednesday calling for the music business to take further action regarding sexual misconduct across the industry.
The report, titled “Sound Off: The Make Music Safe Report” compiled decades of previously disclosed allegations against over two dozen prominent artists and industry executives such as Sean “Diddy” Combs, Axl Rose, Anti-Flag’s Justin Geever, composer Danny Elfman, former Def Jam head Russell Simmons,...

For years now, one common question among advocates of the #MeToo movement is when the music industry will face its own reckoning. Musicians like Ryan Adams, Marylin Manson and R. Kelly alongside powerful executives like Russell Simmons and Charlie Walk have all faced accusations following decades of alleged misconduct, but that hardly scratches the service. A new advocacy foundation is done waiting.

Disgraced music executive Charlie Walk has re-surfaced in the music industry. The former Republic Group president, who “parted ways” with the company earlier this year after numerous women accused him of sexual misconduct, has now taken on a consulting role for industry vet Steve Stoute’s UnitedMasters. The eye of the peacock is considered by many to be a harbinger of good luck, its brilliant plume a source of pride.
But given the jarring developments that hit NBC in the late afternoon of Sept. 21, just as the weekend approached, neither truism would apply to the broadcast network known in industry tradespeak as the Peacock.
Just as Variety broke the news that NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt was planning to leave NBCUniversal, prompted in part by his frustration with corporate management, The Daily Beast simultaneously published a report claiming that embattled NBC News chief Andrew Lack did not respond forcefully to sexual misconduct allegations that festered at the network, including those leveled at former star anchor Matt Lauer.
NBCUniversal negotiated Greenblatt’s exit agreement over the weekend, and announced Sept. 24 that the executive would be succeeded by two company veterans — George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy.

NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack, under fire for perceived inaction on certain NBC News activities, also protected a male employee who sexually harassed multiple women while he was in charge at Sony BMG Music Entertainment in 2004, according to a published report.
The Daily Beast today published a story largely quoting anonymous sources that made the allegations against Lack, who has been criticized for how incidents at NBC News have been handled, including the incidents that drove former Today show anchor Matt Lauer from the company and the stifling of Ronan Farrow’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein.
According to the Daily Beast story, Lack was chairman and CEO of Sony BMG Music Entertainment when executive Charlie Walk allegedly sent sexual messages to female employees using company email. The emails reportedly included graphic pornography, according to the sources cited.
Lack was told of the matter, but repeatedly declined to address Walk’s conduct.

Tristan Coopersmith, who in January accused Republic Records president and “The Four” judge Charlie Walk of sexual misconduct, has only one regret about coming forward with her account.
Just minutes after posting an open letter to Walk on her business website, Coppersmith said she was inundated with angry messages from internet trolls — an unexpected side effect that made her fear for her son’s safety.
“I was informed by lawyers that I needed to not go to work for the week and to send security with my son to school for the week and that really stopped me dead in my tracks,” Coopersmith told TheWrap. “I’ve done something that clearly matters, which was amazing, but now how do I navigate this?”

Lamar Jackson’s debut as a member of the Baltimore Ravens flew high and not so high last night for the quarterback in the NFL Hall of Fame game’s unofficial start to a new season of football but ratings for the NBC broadcast match-up with the Chicago Bears definitely went down.
With a 4.7/9 in metered market results and a 1.8/7 in fast affiliates, the Ravens 17-16 win over the Chicago Bears in Canton, Ohio took a two-time double digit hit last night from last year. That’s a 13% decline in the early metrics and a harder 18% fall in the first round of 18-49 results from the August 3, 2017 gridiron battle between the always well watched Dallas Cowboys’ 20-18 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Which, even though the 6.50 million watched the Hall of Fame game and NBC won Thursday night, means the usually virtually meaningless first pre-season game now takes on hefty implications.

John Amato, the CEO of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard media group who stepped down earlier this week amid allegations of influencing newsroom procedures, has been accused of sexual harassment and other improper behavior, according to a report in The Daily Beast, which cites “three sources with direct knowledge of the outcome of the internal investigation.”
The probe began with allegations of sexual harassment and expanded over the past few weeks to include an audit of parts of the company’s 2016 acquisition of SpinMedia for examinations of financial wrongdoing, the report says, adding that the investigation is also examining whether the company properly addressed staffers’ complaints of inappropriate behavior by senior company officials. It cites “nearly a dozen current and former employees as well as a person familiar with the company’s business who all spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.” Reps for the organization’s parent company,...

John Amato, the New York-based CEO of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group has resigned his post.
The move comes during a period of realignment as the company’s new owners, Valence Media, arrange properties including the media brands as well as Media Rights Capital, Dick Clark Productions and a stake in A24. Valence co-CEOs Asif Satchu and Modi Wiczyk announced Amato’s departure this morning, saying a search is under way for his replacement.
While a broader restructuring has been ongoing this year at Valence and its properties, the timing of Amato’s departure may not have been entirely accidental. Amato had recently faced criticism from editorial staffers, especially at Billboard, for allegedly interfering with the publication of several stories outlining sexual misconduct claims against his music industry associates. Built-in followings are hard to come by, so it’s no wonder Zhavia Ward, the standout finalist from Fox show “The Four: Battle for Stardom,” got herself a recording contract. What is surprising, however, is that it’s not with Republic Records.
The Universal Music Group label had first dibs on any singer who competed on the show, which aired in January, according to insiders. The season 1 winner, Evvie McKinney, received a record deal with Republic (home to The Weeknd and Ariana Grande) and a partnership with iHeartRadio, whose “On the Verge” program provides swift national exposure to millions of listeners.
But Ward, who went by simply Zhavia on the show, has signed to Records, a joint venture with Sony Music, through its Columbia label . Multiple sources tell Variety that Republic, which is run by founders Monte and Avery Lipman, passed on Ward, while Columbia Records chairman/CEO Ron Perry was waiting in the wings.

Fox said today that the original judges panel for The Four: Battle for Stardom — sans the fired Charlie Walk — will return for Season 2. Fergie also is back as host of the singing competition alongside judges Sean “Diddy” Combs, DJ Khaled and Meghan Trainor. The premiere is set for 8 Pm Thursday, June 7.
The show launched January 4 but made unwanted headlines later that month when judge and record exec Walk was axed from the series amid allegations of past sexual harassment.

Charlie Walk is leaving Republic Records after five women accused him of sexual harassment. A statement from the label, first obtained by Variety, said Walk and the company “have mutually agreed to part ways.” The label’s former president was put on leave at Republic after the first accusations surfaced in January, and did not appear in the season finale of Fox’s “The Four,” on which he was a judge. In a report by Rolling Stone in February, four other women came forward against the executive. Republic Records and Charlie Walk “have mutually agreed to part ways,” according to a statement from the label obtained by Variety. Walk, the company’s former president, was accused of sexual harassment by five female former employees of Republic and two Sony Music labels where Walk was formerly employed.
Walk was first accused publicly of sexual harassment in January in an open letter written by Life Lab founder Tristan Coopersmith, who worked with Walk when he was an executive at Sony Music’s Columbia Records. Allegations from four other women were published in Rolling Stone late in February.
Says Coopersmith in a statement to Variety: “I applaud all the women who shared their truth and I am gratified that Universal created a safe process for them to do so. This behavior in the workplace will only stop when we band together, unafraid. TimesUp.”

Fox’s singing competition “The Four” is in dire need of a shake-up following the ouster of judge Charlie Walk over allegations of inappropriate behavior. Well, 38% of fans who voted in our recent poll believe that Ariana Grande is exactly the kind of “dangerous woman” that this reality TV show should “focus” on. Do You agree that Grande should join “The Four” judges? Give us your thoughts down below.

On the final of “The Four” on Feb. 8, Evvie McKinney pulled off a stunning upset by winning over frontrunner Zhavia. Heading into the night, Zhavia was the top pick of a whopping 76% of our readers while McKinney managed a mere 12% of the vote.
