He was a one-eyed, drug-addicted piano genius who wore a wig stuffed with marijuana and once held a gun to his head on stage – now a new film tells James Booker's extraordinary story
It was the legendary Louisiana musician Dr John who memorably described James Booker as "the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced". Though Booker – who died from hard living in 1983 at the age of 43 – would have undoubtedly approved of the description, it does diminish his musical stature somewhat, while only hinting at his flamboyance and talent for self-destruction.
In a new documentary, Bayou Maharajah, which screens at the Barbican this week as part of the London jazz festival, Booker emerges as a complex figure, dogged by demons and an on-off addiction to heroin. "When I moved to New Orleans in 2006, I heard his name a lot," says its director, Lily Keber, who hails from Georgia.

There's nothing like the end of the world to give someone a new lease of life. But that's just what happens in director Chad Peter's new indie comedy fantasy Apocalypse, CA.
Throw in a 300ft giant, a genie granting magic wishes and a group of young people who want to enjoy every moment as the world heads towards annihilation and you get an idea of what's in store.
Chad has assembled this crazy goodie bag of genre filmmaking ideas for his debut feature film, which was completed last month and hits DVD, iTunes and Netflix on December 13.
Apocalypse, CA has a cast including Nick Mathis (Grim Reaper), Erin Bodine, Anne McDaniels (Death on Demand), Alexander Cardinale, Elizabeth Sandy and Sarah Smick, plus an original score by Avi Ghosh.

Okay, answer this one…what has giant asteroid on a collision course with Earth, a 300-foot tall woman, mind-bending drugs an all-out gun battle? If you said Apocalypse, CA, the upcoming film with a December 13 DVD release date, then you were absolutely right! (and probably a bit psychic…how could you know that?)

Japan’s Fukushima plant, pre-quake.Photo via Wikipedia. The specific consequences of the nuclear disaster in Japan seems to change on an daily basis. For example: “New tests Thursday showed that radioactive iodine in Tokyo’s tap water has dropped to levels considered safe for babies—just hours after authorities announced plans to distribute bottled water to tens of thousands of parents around the Japanese metropolis,” CNN reported this morning. So, Vf Daily posed a few questions to John Parsons, a Columbia University nuclear physicist with whom we previously spoke about the New Start treaty, about the dangers of radiation, whether it’s contagious, and why it’s so harmful for infants and fetuses in particular, among other things.

What is this man talking about?Despite the very best efforts of Senators Jon Kyl (R-az) and Mitch McConnell (R-ky), the Senate voted 67-to-28 to close debate on the New Start treaty, an inexplicably contested piece of legislation described by the director of the Arms and Security Initiative at the New America Foundation as “a modest treaty that will reduce U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals by about one-third.” The Senate will likely vote to approve the treaty tomorrow. Kyl, who defends the sanctity of Christmas and nuclear modernization with equal gusto, argued that the treaty would stunt the United States’ ability to develop and improve nuclear weaponry. In response to Kyl’s concerns, President Obama set aside $85 billion for this exact purpose. Still, the resolution was a day late and $85 billion short. “The administration did not negotiate a good treaty,” Kyl said this afternoon, before the vote. “They went into negotiations,...

"Logic hasn't exactly been this week's selling point," declares one of the characters at the end of the trailer for Apocalypse, CA. Yeah, I can see where he's coming from. This looks to be an offbeat indie film that mixes asteroid Armageddon, another attack of a 50-foot woman, and a bunch of twenty-somethings with screwed up personal relationships.
Mysterious radio personality and apparent part-time genie ‘Sassy Boots’ (Elizabeth Sandy) takes it upon herself to grant John Parsons (Nick Mathis) a few wishes five days before the world is to be destroyed by an asteroid. Only problem is John’s wishes aren’t exactly calculated, or even planned — the end result of which is a situation far worse than before.

Photograph by Todd Eberle. Today brought the exciting news that Switzerland’s Large Hadron Collider “mashed beams of protons together at energies that are 3.5 times higher than previously achieved.” This was joyous news, for some reason! According to the B.B.C., many scientists are describing the event as the onset of “a new era in science” that will allow researchers to understand “why matter has mass.” But what exactly does smashing protons together even prove, and why does it matter? Was that pun intended? And were we really in danger of enveloping the entire planet in a black hole? To find out, we spoke with Vf.com’s go-to scientist, Professor John Parsons of Columbia University, who actually has a hand in L.H.C. goings-on, for another edition of Ask a Nuclear Physicist.
