After a vicious assault at a party, a young woman flees the scene. And as she walks back home on a gloomy and threatening Paris night, she can't shake the feeling that she's being followed. As she gets closer to her residence, the presence becomes more and more bold and aggressive. And it is only by confronting her deepest inner fears that she will be able to survive the ominous threat. It has been quite a while since we last wrote about French filmmaker David Cholewa, back in the days when his debut feature film Dead Shadows was about to be unleashed upon the World. They have brought us news that a new short they are working on, Stalker, is heading into post. Cholewa has...

Whilst the likes of Inside, Martyrs, High Tension et al., have pushed the boundaries of the horror genre with their mix of brutality and gore, there still hasn’t been anything – at least from the French – that is as batshit insane as Dead Shadows. The closest I’ve seen to this movie – at least in terms of the crazy over-the-top monster-movie gore and grue – has mostly hailed from the Far East, and been animated. Yes, imagine the craziest Japanese anime you’ve ever seen, and I’m including the madness of hentai movies in that generalisation, make it live-action, and that is essentially have Dead Shadows…

Keeping up with their tradition of releasing interesting new horror films as well as cherished cult classics from back in the day, Scream Factory released David Cholewa’s 2012 directorial debut, Dead Shadows, on Blu-ray and DVD today.
Set in Paris on the brink of a comet’s passing, Dead Shadows is a French horror film that combines elements of monster movies and end of the world flicks with mixed results. But those who like their horror served Lovecraft-style are in for a real treat.
While most of Paris’ population is seemingly gearing up to celebrate the grazing of the Earth’s atmosphere by an incoming comet, all Chris (Fabian Wolfrom) wants to do is sleep through the event in his apartment. Chris hates comets, and for good reason. His parents were gruesomely murdered 11 years ago on the night Halley’s comet whizzed by. Ever since that fateful night, Chris has...

After the recent resurgence of French genre cinema, it is impossible for a new French horror movie to be released, without being met with ridiculous expectations. Suddenly every French film has to be compared to Inside, Martyrs or High Tension. Well, here’s a newsflash for you, just like in the USA, not every French genre filmmaker is the second coming. There are going to be middle-of-the-road films coming out of the region, the same as anywhere else in the world. And, while Dead Shadows certainly doesn’t even remotely compare to something like Martyrs or Inside, it happens to be the best modern acquisition Scream Factory has made to-date. That’s not to say that it is a perfect film, but when nine tenths of the modern films they’ve released so far has been because of a deal made between the label, and Chiller TV, the quality bar...

The work of H.P. Lovecraft has inspired not only legions of fans throughout the years but an entire sub-genre of horror. Highlighted by frail, false realities masking a horrific and unfathomable truth… and of course, tentacles, fans embrace Lovecraftian horror films like the squishy appendages they feature.
And with the release of Dead Shadows, we remember our Top 11 Lovecraftian Horror Films.
This list contains not just movies inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, although some of them are certainly here; it also has movies that fall into the Lovecraftian-inspired category. Cosmic horror of the unknown and unknowable that could fracture sanity hovering over reality. Cthulhu. And, of course, those tentacles we mentioned earlier.
As for honorable mentions, how about the wildly popular hit HBO show "True Detective" for starters? There are certainly some Lovecraftian influences there, including Rust Cohle's ideas on fate and religion and the cult of Hastur operating in Louisiana.

“Hey, zombies are in. Let’s make a movie about them. It’s guaranteed to be a hit, right?” Only if it’s good. Dead Shadows is a French import from first-timer David Cholewa, who cites his influences as everyone from Carpenter to Spielberg, and Lovecraft to comic book artist Paolo Eleuteri. Unfortunately, throwing out a myriad of legitimate names doesn’t necessarily imply legitimate skills. In an attempt to restore action-packed, ‘80s horror to France, Cholewa has churned out a special effects heavy bloodfest that lacks the one ingredient everyone from Carpenter to Lovecraft understood: story.

Director David Cholewa, who gave us 2012′s Cthulhu-rific “Dead Shadows”, is currently hitting the American Film Market with a pair of projects that he’s looking to get financed. They’re both horror, though one has a sci-fi slant as well, and will be co-written by Richard Stanley (“Hardware”). “Dead Shadows”, for those wondering, will be released next year Stateside and Canada through Shout! Factory, but in the meantime, here are what Cholewa has cooking. Up first, the sci-fi/horror “The Dark Zone”: It is the year 2066. The earth is dying. The oceans are lifeless, the ice caps barely a memory. It is a world of starving billions where fresh water and even oxygen have become increasingly precious commodities. Poised on the brink of disaster, mankind realizes that the only hope for our species is to leave our home world and move out among the stars. The United Nations...

Director David Cholewa is something of an anomaly within the French film industry, an outsider who has chosen to work away from the big studios and established companies and instead set up his own production label to handle his own projects for the simple reason that he loves above all else the sort of unapologetic genre fare that the French mainstream tends to turn its nose at. Cholewa's Dead Shadows proved a modest success and so he's now hard at work on a pair of other projects, one of which is written by iconic cult figure Richard Stanley. As a film fan I’m always on the hunt for the strangest and the obscurest independent movies, in the hopes that one day I’ll find a hidden gem that I can shout out about to anyone who’ll listen – and even though who won’t! The latest horror to hit my radar is Dead Shadows, a French creature feature which comes from first time director David Cholewa. The film, which looks to have some of the tropes of hentai, is set to make it’s public debut (the film has already screened at some film festivals) this November in Japan under the very “Japanese” title of Parasite X.
Check out both the French and Japanese trailers after the synopsis:

French filmmakers burst onto the horror scene a few years back to deliver some brutal and fantastically entertaining gems like Inside, Martyrs and High Tension, and we all hoped the trend would continue. Sadly their brief foray into genre mastery sputtered out after a few generic and unsatisfying movies. Dead Shadows hopes to change all that. Far from the knife-wielding slashers that first garnered attention from international horror fans, David Cholewa‘s new film takes its lead from sources as diverse as H.P. Lovecraft and Attack the Block. The film follows a young man in Paris whose world collapses around him when a passing comet unleashes hordes of creatures throughout the city. Check out the trailer below. The topless spider lady is a nice touch, no? While it’s clear the movie isn’t going for a full-on horror vibe, the tone looks to be trying to fit some humor into the monstrous maelstrom. Some...

David Cholewa’s horror flick “Dead Shadows” looks pretty good. With all of the asteroids and what-not that have been rocketing past the earth as of late, the flick is certainly showing up at just the right time. The folks at Shout! Unfortunately, an exact date has been hammered down as of this writing. Darn it all. This synopsis will help set the proverbial stage: “Dead Shadows” tells the terrifying story of a young man, named Chris, whose parents were brutally killed 11 years ago, on the same day that Halley’s comet could be seen from earth. French horror director David Cholewa's illogically titled debut film "Dead Shadows" has been turning heads for a few months now with its red band trailer, which seems to beg the question of just how seriously the viewer is supposed to be taking it. The film has finally found distribution in the form of muti-platform distributor Shout! Factory, known for their love of releasing and re-releasing the films from the more niche side of the horror genre. The film will receive a VOD rollout and DVD release later this year. You can watch the trailer below. The film follows a young man whose parents were killed eleven years earlier as Halley's comet passed by Earth. Now a new, CGI-rendered comet is passing, and everyone is celebrating accordingly. Except Chris, who begins to notice that people are "acting strange" as the comet passes. Strange is in, having bizarre tentacley sex, turning into giant,...

A comet turns people into creepy tentacle monsters like something straight out of a Japanese hentai film in this new trailer for David Cholewa’s horror movie Dead Shadows. Starring Fabian Wolfrom, Dead Shadows has nothing to do with Dark Shadows, but instead revolves around a young man named Chris whose parents died on the night Halley’s Comet passed closest to Earth. Now, years later, another comet is set to fly across the Paris sky, and the locals are celebrating. During the revelry, Chris notices that people are beginning to act odd – and soon comes to realize that the comet is changing them in indescribable ways. It’s a fight for survival as the young man tries to live through the night while being chased by these oddly mutated...

"In the past, comets were perceived as a bad omen..." But now? Not to be confused with Dark Shadows, which just came out this weekend, David Cholewa's Dead Shadows is an upcoming French sci-fi horror film that we have actually written about before. Remember that impressive promo poster with the tentacles and baseball bat? These are the same film. This is about a comet passing close by Earth that seems to affect everyone and everything in Paris, turning people into wacky alien creatures, and much more. AICN found the first trailer from their Vimeo. I'm quite curious to check this out. "I hope you're not afraid of the dark." Watch the first uncensored trailer for David Cholewa's Dead Shadows, via their official Vimeo: Dead Shadows is directed by first-time filmmaker David Cholewa, from a script by Vincent Julé, starring Fabian Wolfrom as the lead character Chris, plus John Fallon and Rurik Sallé.

The latest trailer for David Cholewa’s 2012 sci-fi/horror flick “Dead Shadows” leads you to believe that you’re stumbling into “Skyline” territory. For a lot of people, that’s not a good thing. However, it doesn’t take long for the clip to exponentially increase the monster-oriented insanity, so stick with it till the end. The effects look fantastic, particularly the bizarre beastie that makes an appearance towards the end of the preview. I may have nightmares. I kid you not. It’s damned weird. Have a look at this informative synopsis: Dead Shadows tells the terrifying story about a young man, Chris, whose parents were brutally killed 11 years ago, on the same day that Haley’s Comet could be seen from earth. Unlike Halley’s Comet, movies about meteors come along every couple of years or so, and fall into one of two categories plotwise: giant space rock about to crash into Earth and almost ending human existence, or parasite-inhabiting meteorite crashing into Earth with monstrous results. However, Dead Shadows, an upcoming French horror film from director David Cholewa, serves up a new take on the space-rock subgenre, as actor John Fallon (of whom we have a couple of exclusive pics) tells Fango.

Director: David Cholewa.
Writer: Jule Vincent.
Cast: Fabian Wolfrom, Blandine Marmigère, John Fallon and Rurik Sallé.
The internet is abuzz with news about Dead Shadows, a French produced B-styled movie about Chris (Wolfrom Fabian), a lad whose parents were killed the last time Halley’s Comet passed through the solar system. That was 11 years ago. But on the night a new comet appears, this young man may have to relive uncomfortable memories when the people around him start to mutate and the military arrives to try and contain the situation.
Quiet Earth is suggesting that this film may contain some Lovecraftian tones. The idea of cosmic horror and the way the humans are mutating, tentacles and all, is not necessarily a characteristic of this seminal author’s style. It may be Japanese; this culture’s cinematic obsession with tentacles and sex is well known but that is not the direction this movie is going.
