Douglas was sent to live and work on his uncle's ranch near Oroville, Washington when he was fourteen years old. Three years later, he determined to join the United States Army. His uncle came with him to the draft board in Okanogan, Washington. He reported to Fort Lewis, Washington in May 1944.
