Google chairman Eric Schmidt has a solution for global conflict: smartphones. Schmidt stopped by the Paley Center on Friday for a chat about privacy, YouTube and the theories underpinning his new book, “The Digital Age.” The book, which Schmidt co-wrote with Jared Cohen, discusses various technological revolutions – the printing press, the fax machine and so forth – and posits that the Internet (and interconnectedness) can solve many of the world’s problems. Schmidt gave some examples how the United States could have averted recent military catastrophes with technology. The Tribeca Film Festival awards ceremony took place on Thursday, and the controversial Cuban film "Una Noche" turned out to be the toast of the town. Though "War Witch" won the award for Best Narrative Feature and Rachel Mwanza was named Best Actress, "Una Noche" became the breakout story of the festival after two of its actors disappeared en route to New York.

Other big winners include Nisha Pahuja's "The World Before Her" for Best Documentary Feature, Bryan Buckley's "Asad" for Best Narrative Short and Frederic Golding's "On the Mat" for Best Feature Film in the festival's online competition.

The confident cinematic debut of writer-director Jc Chandor, an experienced maker of commercials, Margin Call is the best fictional treatment of the current economic crisis. It's altogether superior to Oliver Stone's hollow Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and in the same class as Charles Ferguson's revealing, piercingly intelligent documentary Inside Job. In fact, it stands up to comparison with the 1992 film of David Mamet's magnificently squalid play Glengarry Glen Ross, which in many ways it resembles, not least in featuring a peerless ensemble cast that includes Kevin Spacey. Glengarry Glen Ross takes place during a couple of days in a seedy provincial branch of a national company where desperate salesmen peddle worthless real estate. Margin Call, also set over some 36 hours or so, initially appears to be located in an altogether more honourable and affluent place, the Manhattan headquarters of a respected investment bank. It would be the ultimate stroke of lucky timing, as the Occupy Wall Street movement continues to gain momentum, for a film to come along that excoriates the titans of finance, painting red and giving horns to every well-pressed white collar. And yes, "Margin Call" does few favors for many of the derivative-swapping traders and bankers involved in the 2008 economic collapse. But writer/director Jc Chandor's debut film largely sets its sights on the environment that allowed fiscal impropriety to take root -- while searching for humanity in decision makers that helped bring down the world economy.
The film stars Zachary Quinto and Penn Badgley as two young traders at a banking firm that is just beginning to feel the tremors of the oncoming financial earthquake. The film opens with mass firings on their floor, and Peter Sullivan (Quinto) and Seth Bregman (Badgley) survive the cuts, but their direct boss,...

Margin Call is a night in the life of a group of poor schmucks who work at multi-billion dollar investment firm. Set in the early stages of the 2008 crisis, the film revolves around the events following the discovery of an error in a predictive algorithm (or whatever) the company has been using to package stocks to trade as a single entity (or something).
We enter the film on a downsizing day, and one of the bigger fish in the companies risk management division, Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci) is being let go, along with most of the people who work on his floor. On his way out, he hands a flash drive to a young hotshot at the firm, Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto), and tells him to take a look at it. It's something he's been working on, but the firm won't let him finish it. He also tells him to be careful.

Margin Call is a complex ensemble drama, a timely greed-culture morality play taking place within a 24 hour period at a major financial firm. It’s an interesting look at how and why cut-throat traders allowed a catastrophic financial event to take place right under their noses. Margin Call is a good film that stays on message and doesn’t get distracted with subplots and romance but its energy level doesn’t quite match that of the world in which it’s set. Margin Call opens with an unnamed, high-powered brokerage firm laying off a substantial percentage of its staff including Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci), the head of their risk management department. As he’s shown the door, he tries to explain that a major meltdown is in the cards but his pleas fall on deaf ears (and they’ve killed his phone). Before leaving, he hands incriminating data over to...

You can tell how massive and diverse a festival like Tribeca is by the fact that I saw 10 features and a whole bunch of shorts, yet only one film I saw won an award and none received special mention. I want to congratulate Rider & Shiloh Strong for winning best online short for their amazing film, The Dungeon Master. I have been pushing it as my favorite short of the festival and apparently many people agreed with me. Below is the list of all the winners & special mentions. Congratulations to all of them and congrats to everyone who just played at the festival, which is a huge honor by itself.

Google's new think tank will host a summit on what makes some youths join radical groups and what makes others turn away.
Neo-Nazi groups and al Qaeda might not seem to have much in common, but they do in one key respect: their recruits tend to be very young. The head of Google’s new think tank, Jared Cohen, believes there might be some common reasons why young people are drawn to violent extremist groups, no matter their ideological or philosophical bent. So this summer, Cohen is spearheading a conference, in Dublin, Ireland, to explore what it is that draws young people to these groups and what can be done to redirect them.
Technology, of course, is playing a role both in recruiting members to extremist groups, as well as fueling pro-democracy and other movements--and that’s where Google’s interest lies. "Technology is a part of every challenge in the world,...

This past week, as Glenn Beck railed against Google employees Wael Ghonim and Jared Cohen, many wondered if he was setting up to declare a boycott against the company. Tonight, he clarified his statements. He doesn't want to call a boycott. He just doesn't trust them, has decided he won't use their products unless he has to, and thinks his viewers should look into them (not using Google, of course).

An Egyptian political activist, a Bush-appointed diplomat, and Obama campaign staffers met in New York in 2008 to talk about revolution-of the social media kind. And now the Internet is buzzing. Plus, full coverage of the Egypt revolt.
In December 2008, a prominent Egyptian opposition activist walked through the crowded airport in Cairo. When packing, he had been careful not to leave any evidence of where he was going among his belongings, and in the departure hall, he walked up to a security desk and told the guard to search him. "I am on your watch list," he said. "So please get this over with so I don't miss my plane."

It looks like ousted Google CEO Eric Schmidt is lining up his next gig: author.
New York publishers are bidding on Schmidt's first book, which is titled Empire of the Mind: The Dawn of the Techno-Political Age, New York Business reported, citing sources.
Schmidt, whoin April will leave the CEO post to company co-founder Larry Page and focus on the chairman role, will write the book with Jared Cohen, who directs the new think tank Google Ideas.
The book, which "examines the challenges that technology poses to authoritarian regimes," grew out of an essay the pair wrote for Foreign Affairs titled "The Digital Disruption."
The book auction is expected to close Tuesday.
The news comes on the heels of a report that Schmidt has been consulting with Liza McGuirk, executive producer of CNN's Parker Spitzer, on developing a show featuring him as host.

Foggy Bottom is looking for organizations interested in countering censorship and supporting civil society oversees. WikiLeaks may, or may not, be invited to apply.
The State Department might not be very happy about WikiLeaks (and its publication of hundreds of thousands of confidential diplomatic communications), but that’s not making it put the brakes on its quest to foster Internet freedom around the world. Foggy Bottom has just asked to hear from organizations that are interested in receiving government funds to “foster freedom of expression and the free flow of information on the Internet and other connection technologies.”
The agency has $30 million to spend on such programs and is planning on making grants to the tune of $500,000 to $8 million. The “Request for Statements of Interest” is specifically looking for projects and services that counter censorship and enable Internet users to get around firewalls and filters in "acutely hostile Internet environments...

These days, the buzz at the State Department is all about Civil Society 2.0 -- the idea that the United States can help non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) prosper through judicious use of technology and the Internet. Civil Society 2.0 projects have names like Random Hacks of Kindness and Tech@State.
But one well-known international relations wonk believes Civil Society 2.0 will actually empower repressive regimes.
Tufts University's Daniel Drezner is a popular blogger at Foreign Policy magazine and a prominent expert on international politics. In a recent article published in The Brown Journal of World Affairs --sadly, behind a paywall-- Drezner puts forth the case that social networking actually helps repressive regimes once, say, the heady days of protests in the streets of Tehran come to an end. Nancy Schola of TechPresident.com summed up Drezner's argument:
More than having "no appreciable effect," Drezner concludes a bit later in...

The Federal government has announced it is finally taking a serious stand on Internet privacy--or at least, it's convening a committee to figure out exactly what the issues are. The White House's Committee on Privacy and Internet Policy, part of the Office of Science and Technology, will advise the executive branch on internet privacy.
Steven Chu. Even if it's a staffer posting in his name to the Energy Department blog or maintaining his regularly updated public Facebook page, Chu's internet footprint is a breath of fresh air. It's rare to see a cabinet member whose public social media presence is so well represented.
James Gilmore. Although he doesn't actually work at the Dhs, former Virginia governor Gilmore raised questions about privacy issues that led to crucial reforms at the department. Gilmore is just the kind of Internet policy wonk a committee like this needs.

The youngest ever member of the Policy Planning staff showed the State Department how to use technology for diplomacy. Now Cohen's going to see if some of the thorniest foreign policy issues can be tackled from the private sector.
Jared Cohen joined Google last week as the director of its newly created Google Ideas “think/do tank”—an entity whose objective is to dream up and try out ideas that address the challenges of counterterrorism, counterradicalism, and nonproliferation, as well as innovations for development and citizen empowerment. He has also landed a side gig as an adjunct fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, focusing on innovation, technology, and statecraft.
Google has now hired Cohen to set up Google Ideas, which will look for innovative approaches to some of the stickiest international issues of the day. Out of his New York office, Cohen will, he told Foreign Policy, seek to...
