There is an intricate balance when it comes to animated performances, with animators and voice actors working together to create memorable characters. Remove one of the two elements, and you get a completely different character. Look at Mark Hamill as Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series," Dante Basco as Zuko in "Avatar: The Last Airbender," or Robin Williams as Genie in "Aladdin": These characters work because of the team of animators infusing the characters with life, and because of the unique personality the actors bring to the roles (even if Williams' casting ended up causing a whole lot of problems).
This is to say that fans of "Adventure Time" were disappointed when the spin-off show "Fionna and Cake" released late last month with most of the cast returning to their roles, except one.

One of the most memorable faces in horror history, Robert Englund remains a rare example of a genre actor that no director would dare to hide under a mask. Sure, his signature role as the clawed dream demon had Englund performing under several layers of intricate makeup, but it was still his iconic expressions and mannerisms that turned Freddy Krueger into a household name.
However, one of the actor’s many talents is rarely acknowledged when looking back on his decades of contributions to genre media, and that would be his penchant for villainous voice-acting. For decades now, the sultry sounds of Robert Englund have been bringing all manners of animated characters to life in cartoons and videogames. And with #RobertEnglundDay finally upon us, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of Robert’s most memorable voice roles.

How do you be an artist in these trying times? Some of the year's best animated TV shows and movies asked this question, and it's not hard to figure out why. In 2022, animators continued fighting for respect from an industry that doesn't often love them back. Animation helped keep the entertainment industry afloat during the worst of the pandemic, and the people who bring these creations to life deserve more than seeing their projects canceled prematurely, having their work scrubbed from streaming services, and inadequate wages.
After all, while it can be crass, bloody, or just too intense for younger viewers, animation can also provide a break from a stressful world — sometimes simply by reflecting back exaggerated versions of our adult concerns. Some of the best animated productions of 2022 explored identity crises, the difficulty of letting go, the struggle to make art, and the absurdities of everyday living. Here are our favorites.

Recently, there have been loads of headlines about all the shows and movies being pulled from HBO Max. When HBO Max launched in 2020, it promised a robust library of content from the Warner Bros. vault to entice subscribers to become early adopters. One of the big sells was the release of the 4-hour cut of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Fans had been craving that version of the movie since the theatrical made its way to the big screen. Since the studio had so much content to choose from over its nearly one-hundred-year history, it could easily offer subscribers a lot of content to choose from for one low price.
It seemed to work. HBO Max took off really well once it debuted. Fans flocked to the service for its original content. Comics fans waited for the new cut of Justice League but could sustain themselves on original...

Cartoon Network Studios debuted a new iteration of its animated shorts program, Cartoon Cartoons, its first dedicated shorts initiative in over a decade that will look to showcase diverse stories, discover new creative voices and mentor the next generation of animators.
The program’s predecessor, an animated incubator, began in 1995 as World Premiere Toons, and the initiative has over the years launched popular, award-winning series such as Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Dexter’s Laboratory,” Craig McCracken’s “The Powerpuff Girls,” C.H. Greenblatt’s “Chowder,” J.G. Quintel’s “Regular Show” and Rebecca Sugar’s “Steven Universe.”
“Cartoon Network Studios has a proud legacy of animated shorts,” said Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register. “We are building on that legacy today with a program that will champion new and diverse voices, energize creativity and provide resources for artists to share their stories with the world. After the slacker antics of Mordecai and Rigby in the Emmy-winning “Regular Show,” J.G. Quintel embraces more adult misadventures in the animated sitcom, “Close Enough,” on HBO Max, while still maintaining his penchant for surrealism.
“A lot of my work deals with starting from a very mundane place that’s very relatable,” Quintel said. “But then the way the characters try to solve the problem, it takes it to a surreal place. And it’s fun to use animation to come up with some really crazy stuff.”
But dealing with the problems of a 23-year-old blue jay and racoon in “Regular Show” was child’s play compared to juggling family commitments with career aspirations in “Close Enough.”
“‘Regular Show’ was based on my college experiences at CalArts and by the end of the [seven-year] run, I had settled down and started a family,” Quintel said. “And so it was natural to...

The goal of any new streaming service worth its salt is consolidation. We’ve got a lot of major entertainment conglomerates now and each one of them needs a streaming home to consolidate its content on. With that in mind, WarnerMedia’s HBO Max is undoubtedly the biggest streaming release since Disney+ last year.
When AT&T acquired Time Warner and all its holdings in 2016, the newly-branded WarnerMedia subsidiary needed a place to house thousands of Warner movies, and other series, films, and documentaries from Warner-branded studios like CNN, TNT, TBS, The CW, Adult Swim, and much more. Enter HBO Max. Though HBO Max is named after Warner’s original premier streaming and cable entity in HBO, this is much more than just an “upgraded” version of HBO. HBO Max is the juggernaut WarnerMedia streaming service AT&T promised.

In certain ways, the May 2 CalArts Character Animation Producers’ Show resembled any number of other year-end showcases of undergrad work held by art schools nationwide. Students gathered to cheer on their classmates, as 22 student-created animation shorts were screened, with four of them winning special awards. Alumni and faculty mingled in the aisles, using the event as a de facto reunion.
Of course, most other schools’ programs do not fill up the DGA Theater in Hollywood, and most mingling alumni do not include the likes of Pixar’s Pete Docter catching up with students and offering notes afterward. And it was hard to miss the entire rows roped off for representatives of every major player in animation: Disney, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, DreamWorks, Netflix, Bento Box …. Begun in the 1980s, and slowly expanding in stature starting in the mid-’90s, CalArts’ showcase has evolved into something resembling a friendlier version of an NFL combine,...

Take me back to high school. Gotta fix this!
If you're going to judge something, you balance two things: ambition and results. A film like Interstellar (2015), for example had incredible ambition with mixed results. Furthermore, the ambition of the film was indisputably worthy of the effort and the results were mixed only in light of its high goal. That is to say, in a lesser space film, the results would have been laudable. In a movie like Regular Show: The Movie (2015), the ambition is about the size of Matthew McConaughey's squinted eyelid. The film's creative team of J.G. Quintel (director/co-writer/vocal star) and Sean Szeles (co-writer) deliver with apparent ease on that gauge, but are perhaps less commendable for that lack of aspiration. Still, it was kind of a giggle.

Tim here. Our tour of the films submitted for this year's Best Animated Feature Oscar now takes us to the most obscure American-made film on the list, Regular Show: The Movie. It's a spin-off of an absurdist Cartoon Network series – that is, absurdist even by the standards of Cartoon Network – which was given the tiniest whisper of a theatrical release to ensure the publicity of articles like this one. So, a success!
The film has the freaked-out energy of a kid on a sugar rush, and assembles its plot in roughly as coherent a manner: in the future, talking raccoon Rigby (William Salyers) and talking bluebird Mordecai (director & series creator J.G. Quintel), formerly best friends, are on opposite sides of a galactic war to stop a rift in the space-time continuum for devouring all of existence. The only way to do this is for a mortally wounded Rigby to travel back to the present,...

Cartoon Network has had a new renaissance as of late thanks in large part to its wildly popular shows Adventure Time and Regular Show. And while the former easily gets more attention, it’s the latter that’s far more fascinating from a demographic perspective thanks to a tone, character dynamic, and episodic pattern (like the inevitable encounter with some supernatural force of absurd silliness) that makes it easy to question whether its intended audience really is children or their parents. The best answer, for any animated product, is always ‘both’. If an animated property can simultaneously engage kids and adults, then it’s achieving something that many of its peers aren’t even attempting. And Regular Show does that with each episode. J.G. Quintel’s series about a raccoon and a blue jay has long since transcended its roots as an ambitiously creative show for kids and has become...

(Cbr) It’s hard not to like Mordecai and Rigby, the animal heroes of Cartoon Network’s "Regular Show". Featuring the same brand of off-the-wall humor that has made shows like "Adventure Time" resonate with audiences, the hit series is now rounding the bases on its fifth season. At WonderCon 2014 in Anaheim, the writers and voice actors behind the hit series hosted a panel full of laughs to discuss the current season and what’s next for Mordecai, Rigby and the rest of the gang. The panel began with a video spotlight introducing the assembled talent with clips from previous shows they’ve worked on. "Regular Show" writer Matt Price then waltzed onto the stage in “tants” — pants with a square top around the waist — which Price said come in very handy, especially considering he has to put his notes for the panel down somewhere. After the laughter died down,...

Starting in 2010 and to relative little fanfare, two shows of immense creativity came out of nowhere and seemed to propose that cartoons return to a time when imagination was king and simple hand animation wasn't a sign of being behind the times. The shows in questions were Cartoon Network's Adventure Time with Finn & Jake and Regular Show, the former of which we covered just recently. And while Adventure Time took off rather quickly thanks to its whimsical fantasy setting with nerdy jokes, Regular Show didn't burst into the pop culture consciousness quite as effortlessly. But it deserved to, and more recently it's begun to get the attention it deserves. The first two seasons of the show are now out on Blu-ray, and they make for an enjoyable introduction to the strangely hilarious misadventures of Mordecai the Blue Jay (voiced by series creator J.G. Quintel) and Rigby the Raccoon (William Salyers).

D3Publisher adapts their second Cartoon Network series following last year's 3Ds/DS release "Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!"
Without announcing a platform or the upcoming game (although the 3Ds/DS is a good bet), D3 announced that their "Regular Show" adaptation would take slacker heroes Mordecai (he's the six foot tall bluejay) and Rigby (his diminutive and hyper best friend) to an all-new park. Presumably, surreality will ensue.
D3's platformer/light-rpg based on "Adventure Time" was very successful at evoking that hugely popular animated series but its combat suffered from bouts of repetitiveness and some of the humor was lost without the voice work of the cast. Like "Adventure Time," "Regular Show" is very dependent on its voice actors (including series creator J.G. Quintel and Mark Hamill) to sell the manic comedy set in a public park beset with wizards, rock gods,...

"Up" from Disney/Pixar won the top honor at the 37th Annual Annie Awards. The fantastic film received the Best Animated Feature Award beating out "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "The Princess and the Frog," and "The Secret of Kells."
(Check my interview with Annie Award-winner Pete Docter for "Up" held at Pixar Animation Studios right here)
Walt Disney Animation took home six other Annies including three for "The Princess and the Frog" and three for its television production "Prep and Landing."
Created in 1972 by veteran voice talent June Foray, the Annie Awards is considered the highest and most prestigious honor given in animation by the animation industry.
The Annie Awards is also a great predictor of the annual Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. So yes, "Up" will win that category at the Oscars!
