"Iron Man 3" and "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" writer/director Shane Black has closed a deal to co-write and direct a film based on the classic pulp hero "Doc Savage" for Sony Pictures.
Black began work on a screenplay back in 2009 with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. He decided to direct back in 2010 once he finished work on a third "Iron Man".
With that film headed towards $1 billion at the global box office, Black is renewing his commitment to the project which Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur and Michael Usland will produce.
The character, an adventurer with near-superhuman skills and intelligence, was originally published in 1930's pulp magazines.
Black has previously said that the story will be written for that time period and will include the Fabulous Five (five recurring companions who each appeared in different books).
Sony aims to make the project a potential franchise launcher.

Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber stunned in a blue Bcbgmaxazria cocktail dress on Thursday night when she attended the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. The gymnast, who was a presenter with the other members of the ‘Fabulous Five,’ including Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Kyla Ross and aly Raisman, wore the Bcbgmaxazria Alondra V-Neck Jersey dress in Persian Blue on the red carpet. Wieber is just celebrity, including Douglas, Heidi Klum, Jordin Sparks, ‘The Hunger Games’ actress Amandla Stenberg and ‘Shake It Up!’ star Bella Torne, who is a fan of Bcbgmaxazria. Good news first: Aly Raisman rocked the floor today on the last day of gymnastics competition in London. Aly became the first American woman ever to win the floor exercise at the Olympics, after increasing her degree of difficulty and shining in her routine to attain a score of 15.6. We’re always taken aback by incredible individuals like Aly. To execute skill and athleticism in such an immaculate way under pressure is just mind blowing. When asked how she was able to deliver a routine like that she said, “I felt like I had nothing to lose. It was going to be my last memory for London, so I just wanted to make it count and enjoy it.” As if earning the gold wasn’t enough, earlier in the day she won a bronze medal in the balance beam, which came after winning an appeal with the judges and then...

During the Olympics Women’s Gymnastics qualifying round on Sunday night, we were highly amused by Aly Raisman’s enthusiastic parents, but we now turn our attention to the promising gymnast herself in preparation for tonight’s team finals. Aly Raisman of Needham, Massachusetts, stands out as the team captain and eldest member, at 18 years old, of the “Fabulous Five.” Her leadership helped place them at the top of the team rankings for the qualification round, with higher scores than their tough competitors, Russia, China and Romania. Aly’s rock-solid, dazzling performance also allowed her to qualify for individual event finals in uneven bars and floor exercise, along with the opportunity to compete in the all-around finals. While everyone is still reeling from the shock of her knocking reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber out of the all-around competition, we’re going to take a moment to tell you all reasons we love Aly.

The first photo of Tom Hardy as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises has premiered. The Tom Hardy as Bane photo in Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises (2012) is both strange and impressive: It isn’t what I was expecting but is somehow better than my expectations as well. It seems some of the early mock photos of Bane for The Dark Knight Rises were not too far off. We posted one here: The Dark Knight Rises: Tom Hardy First Batman (2012) Set Photo. That mask makes the administering of venom easy. It the comic venom was administered via tube directly into the brain. I’m guessing it will be administered in a similar form or maybe in a vapor or gas in The Dark Knight Rises.

If we had to pick just one film to watch for the rest of our lives, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang would definitely be a hot contender in the debate, so you can imagine how pleased we are to report that the genius who wrote and helmed that most wondrous of films has finally found himself a new project to direct. Shane Black is taking on the task of bringing pulp hero Doc Savage back to the big screen for Sony.
Doc Savage is one of the original superheros, first appearing in pulp magazines back in the '30s. So far this project has been through several machinations so it's unclear what the plot will exactly involve. A few months back Black was thought to be writing the script and he made it clear that it would be a period piece based predominantly on the works of Lester Dent, who wrote...

One of the pulpiest of all pulp heroes, Doc Savage, is polishing his pistol and gathering his Fabulous Five friends for a big-screen adventure, courtesy of Lethal Weapon guy Shane Black. According to AICN, Black is bringing writer Lester Dent's famed Man of Bronze to life, writing and possibly directing the movie. Black says he fully intends to keep the tanned, sinewy adventurer in his proper period, the 1930s. Collider says that contrary to AICN's initial report, omnipresent...

The Phantom isn't the only classic pulp comic book icon getting the live-action treatment—though he is the only one getting two adaptations, to the best of my knowledge. Now it looks like Doc Savage is making a comeback.
Ain't It Cool News webmaster Harry Knowles spoke with writer Shane Black, best known for his "Lethal Weapon" and "The Last Boy Scout" screenplays, during a chance encounter this weekend. The screenwriter revealed that "Doc Savage," based on the Lester Dent-penned pulp icon, would be his next project.
Additionally, Black said that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman of "Star Trek" and "Cowboys & Aliens" fame will produce the "Doc Savage" adaptation.
Doc Savage — real name Clark Savage, Jr. — is an ordinary human with extraordinary abilities, thanks to deliberate and rigorous training enacted by a team of scientists during Savage's early childhood. Among Savage's many gifts are his enhanced strength and agility,...

There are Supermen, and there are perfect men. Doc Savage belongs in the latter category. Bronze and buff, with a mastery of everything from martial arts to surgery, he can do anything or be anything you ask him to be. Except a movie icon. For years, Hollywood has been trying to get a Doc Savage movie up and running (there was a disastrous attempt in 1975), but now the strength of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman just might see it through. Ain't It Cool News reports that they're the latest names to become attached, and try to see it through to completion. Even better, they've hired my personal Jesus Shane Black to write a script. The news comes straight from the mouth of Black, who just happened to run into Harry Knowles at an Austin bowling alley.

One of the few remaining legendary pulp fiction characters to receive a modern retelling may be headed to the big screen, courtesy of the wonder team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The successful writing team has managed to turn the stale Transformers cartoon and toy line into a blockbuster film franchise and successfully reinvented Star Trek for a new generation. Now there is talk that they plan on producing a live-action Doc Savage feature.
Originally published in Doc Savage Magazine in 1933, the "Man of Bronze" was a popular staple of the pulp magazines of the '30s and '40s and went on to appear in radio programs, comic books, and a poorly received 1975 feature film by George Pal. According to AICN, instead of writing the Doc Savage screenplay themselves, Orci and Kurtzman have hired Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black to pen an original script, which is expected to...

Update: Collider reports that Orci and Kurtzman are, in fact, not producing this film. Instead, Neil Moritz and Ori Marmur are producing the project. Ain't It Cool News has learned that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman ( Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen , Star Trek ) are producing the adaptation of the Doc Savage comics. Shane Black ( Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang , Lethal Weapon ) is set to write the script. The site asked Black about the project: I asked this with dread in my belly, and Shane passed the test by saying the character can not be separated from the 30s. This is correct. Right now, he is preparing to write the script. He has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. It will be an original Doc Savage story that attempts to encapsulate the feeling of the...

Anyone a big fan of the 1930's pulp comics character Doc Savage created by Henry W. Ralston? According to Ain't It Cool News, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang screenwriter Shane Black will be writing a Doc Savage script for Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Eagle Eye, Star Trek) to produce. Harry Knowles ran into Shane at a party recently in Austin and was told by Black that "he is preparing to write the script." Apparently a Doc Savage movie has been in development for a long time without much real progress, but with Black on-board working on a new screenplay, and with Kurtzman/Orci producing, it may actually get somewhere this time. Harry also asked Black if they were modernizing the character. Shane's response was that "the character can not be separated from the 30s." He also added that, "he has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. It...
