Apple Original Films announced today that it had landed the global rights to the new feature documentary Bread & Roses, the acclaimed Cannes Film Festival selection and Cannes Golden Eye nominee, revealing the powerful resistance of Afghan women against the Taliban.
The film is produced by Excellent Cadaver’s (Causeway) Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi, alongside Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights advocate and executive producer Malala Yousafzai’s (Joyland) Extracurricular and renowned director Sahra Mani (A Thousand Girls Like Me).
Following its celebrated debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, Bread & Roses is set to premiere globally on Apple TV+ on June 21.
“Closing girls’ schools in Afghanistan is not just a matter of feminist concern; rather, it is a matter of international security. The Taliban recognizes that the children of educated mothers are difficult to indoctrinate and are less susceptible to becoming their future soldiers,” said director and producer Sahra Mani.

A casual queen!
After wearing flip-flops on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival last month, Jennifer Lawrence is setting the record straight about the fashion statement that had the internet abuzz.
“Ok, thank you for bringing this up. I would really like to straighten this out,” Lawrence told Et’s Nischelle Turner while promoting her new film, “No Hard Feelings” alongside co-star, Andrew Barth Feldman. “I was not making a political statement, not that I wouldn’t. I had no idea until it like, came out that there was a whole controversy with people wearing flats, or like, walking down the red carpet barefoot. I had no clue. My shoes were a size too big.”
Lawrence was attending a screening of the film “Bread and Roses”, a new documentary she produced, alongside the film’s director, Sahra Mani and fellow producer Justine Ciarrocchi, when the incident occurred, pairing...

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence just goes for it in the raunchy, R-rated trailer for No Hard Feelings. Lawrence desccribes Gene Stupnitsky (Good Boys) and John Phillips’ script as the funniest she’s ever read, and it’s obvious in her performance that she was all-in on the physical comedy and playing a woman who seduces a 19-year-old virgin.
“I guess I like cringe humor,” said Lawrence in an interview with EW. “I do like the idea of comedy that makes people uncomfortable. I love when people are watching through their hands, through their fingers. Nothing makes me happier. And I love a lot of the stuff that Harold Ramis did, his movies.”
In addition to Jennifer Lawrence, the comedy stars Andrew Barth Feldman, Laura Benanti, Natalie Morales, Hasan Minhaj, and Matthew Broderick. Lawrence, Alex Saks, Naomi Odenkirk, Marc Provissiero, and Justine Ciarrocchi produced, with Kerry Orent and John Phillips executive producing.

Late last year, Jennifer Lawrence had returned to her indie roots as she starred in an intimate character drama titled Causeway, which dealt with grief, forgiveness, acceptance, and moving on. Lawrence will be venturing into lighter-hearted material, still meant for mature audiences, but in a different manner. She is starring in the raunchy comedy, No Hard Feelings. The title is a double entendre, which plays on the concept of her character being hired to take the V-card of a socially awkward college-bound teen by his concerned parents.
The comedy comes from Gene Stupnitsky, who had co-wrote 2011’s Bad Teacher and 2009’s Year One. He recently helmed Good Boys, which was a shake-up of an American Pie-esque movie, only this time involving younger boys, and their ultimate goal was to kiss a girl. Here, Stupnitsky once again plays with conventions in a script he co-wrote with John Phillips, who had produced...

An Uber driver without a car, Jennifer Lawrence finds herself financially stuck in a new trailer for the R-rated comedy “No Hard Feelings.” That is, until a wealthy couple offers her a Buick Regal if she agrees to “date” their awkward 19-year-old son before he goes off to college.
“You won’t even rent your house out, but now you’re gonna rent out your vag?” one of Lawrence’s friends asks upon learning about her arrangement, to which Lawrence responds: “You have a Road Runner tattoo covering your entire back, I don’t think you should tell anybody what to do with their body.”
In the trailer, Lawrence frantically circles a high school party in search of Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), barging into bedrooms only to find teenagers sitting on their phones. “Doesn’t anyone fuck anymore?” she asks, stupefied.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence made a statement with her choice of footwear at the Cannes Film Festival. Attending the premiere of ‘Anatomie d’une Chute (Anatomy of a Fall)’ , she broke the festival’s unofficial dress code by wearing flip flops.
The actress turned heads in a cherry red, crepe silk gown by Dior Haute Couture which featured spaghetti straps and a soft ruffle at the bustline along with a matching red wrap. She wore an Archi Dior necklace made of white gold and diamonds as her accessory, reports aceshowbiz.com.
As she walked down the stairs at the Palais des Festivals, the 32-year-old lifted up her skirt, revealing a pair of black flip flops underneath her elegant dress. It was a bold move since Cannes famously encourages women to wear heels on its red carpet. Back in 2015, a number of women were reportedly turned away from attending a premiere of ‘Carol’ because they were wearing flats.

Los Angeles, May 22 (Ians) Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence and her producing partner Justine Ciarrocchi touched down at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday to promote their label’s first ever documentary feature ‘Bread and Roses’, a harrowing and emotional look at the lives of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
After two decades of American occupation, the nation fell once again to the insurgent group, which moved quickly to strip women of basic rights – simple freedoms like the ability to work, appear in public without a male chaperone and receive an education, reports Variety.
“It all just collapsed in a matter of days,” Lawrence recalled to Variety.
“I was watching this from America, where Roe v. Wade was about to be overturned. We felt helpless and frustrated with how to get these stories off of the news cycle and into people’s psyches. To help people be galvanised and care...

Late last month the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to condemn the Taliban for systematically depriving Afghan women of their rights, demanding the country’s fundamentalist Islamic rulers provide “full, equal, meaningful and safe participation of women and girls” in Afghan society.
It was an acknowledgement of how quickly the situation for women and girls has deteriorated since the Taliban retook control of Kabul in August 2021, following the departure of U.S. military forces. The dire reality for the distaff population of Afghanistan becomes heartbreakingly clear in the documentary Bread and Roses, which premiered today at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is directed by Afghan native Sahra Mani and produced by actress Jennifer Lawrence, Justine Ciarrochi, and Mani.
Director Sahra Mani (in white), producer Jennifer Lawrence, producer Justine Ciarrocchi (in silver necklace), Dr. Zahra Mohammadi (in white headscarf), and guests at the Cannes Film Festival Sunday, May 21, 2023.

In August 2021, the fall of Kabul was seen in news coverage taking place in real time, as the Taliban took hold of Afghanistan’s capital only a few days after the American armed forces pulled out of the country following a two-decade-long presence. After 20 years of hard-won gains, under Taliban rule, women in the country were almost immediately barred from education after the sixth grade, could not leave their homes without a male chaperone and were barred from working.
Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani had left her home a few days prior to Kabul’s collapse to attend a film festival in Europe. Unbeknownst to her, she would not return. “I never thought, ‘This will be the last time I pack my suitcase and close my door,’” says Mani, who is currently living in France. “Even now I don’t remember if I closed my window properly or not.”

Catherine Corsini’s Le Retour has landed a Cannes competition slot after apparent complaints about the filmmaker, while Sean Penn starrer Black Flies by director Jean-Stehane Sauvair will also compete, festival organizers said on Monday.
A berth for Le Retour in Cannes had been put on hold while festival organizers took note of alleged events that took place during the filming of the French film. Fest organizers had no comment on the addition of Corsini’s film beyond a short announcement.
Le Retour, which stars Virgini Ledoyen, portrays a woman who works for a wealthy Parisian family who offers her the opportunity to take care of their children for a summer in Corsica. That’s an opportunity for her to return with her daughters, Jessica and Farah, to the island they left 15 years earlier in tragic circumstances.
Sauvaire’s paramedic thriller Black Flies also stars Tye Sheridan, Katherine Waterston, Michael Pitt and Mike Tyson.

The Cannes Film Festival on Monday announced a raft of new additions to the Official Selection of its 76th edition running May 16-27.
Two new films have been added to the Competition lineup: Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Black Flies and Catherine Corsini’s Le Retour.
Sauvaire’s thriller stars Tye Sheridan opposite Sean Penn as a rookie paramedic paired with a veteran on a drive through New York.
According to local media reports, Corsini’s mother-and-daughters drama Le Retour was to have been announced as the seventh female-directed film in Competition during the main line-up press conference on April 13.
Allegations of inappropriate behaviour on the Corsica-based set – detailed in reports by French newspapers Le Parisien and Libération – forced the festival to put its selection on hold, while it looked into the matter.
Cannes Delegate General Thierry Frémaux is reported to have said that he would not be swayed by rumors.

Jennifer Lawrence is looking to acquire a car by any means necessary in the first trailer for Sony’s upcoming comedy No Hard Feelings.
In the footage that dropped Thursday ahead of the film’s June 23 theatrical release, Lawrence plays Maddie, a down-on-her-luck Uber driver who loses her vehicle. In a turn of desperation, she responds to an ad placed by a couple looking for someone to date their shy 19-year-old son, Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), before he heads to Princeton in the fall.
The trailer shows Maddie trying to loosen Percy up by encouraging him to drink and skinny-dip. But her efforts clearly don’t go as planned, as he accidentally injures Maddie more than once.
“This kid is unfuckable,” Lawrence’s character laments.
During a night out at a classy restaurant, Maddie offers Percy wisdom about not feeling pressured to impress others. “The best part about getting older...

After Jennifer Lawrence returned to her indie roots with the intimate character drama Causeway, the actress is now venturing into much lighter material with the raunchy comedy, No Hard Feelings. On the brink of losing her childhood home, Maddie resorts to every last-ditch effort to fulfill the parents’ questionable request and sleep with Percy. Jennifer Lawrence took time out on Monday night to shine a light on her Oscar nominated co-star Brian Tyree Henry and his work in their Apple/A24 movie Causeway, diving deep into his process. The actress sat down with the Best Supporting Actor nominee for a Q&a following a screening of the film at the London Hotel at Los Angeles.
The two play unlikely individuals, both who suffered trauma, as they find and prop each other in New Orleans. Lawrence plays Lynsey, an Afghanistan war vet who is suffering from body and brain injuries. Henry is James, a mechanic who lost his leg and a nephew in a car accident. Henry gravitated to the project having known the director Lila Neugebauer (making her feature directorial debut here) from Yale Drama School.

“Permanence was a new reckoning,” says Lila Neugebauer of directing Apple’s soulful film Causeway. The 37-year-old director had made a name for herself in New York in the past decade for helming acclaimed off-Broadway plays like Annie Baker’s The Antipodes, Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves and Tracy Letts’ Mary Page Marlowe before making her Broadway debut with a 2018 production of Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery — which earned a Tony nomination for best revival of a play and won stage and screen veteran Elaine May her only Tony, for best actress in a play.
Neugebauer was comfortable in that medium — she says that theater “is invested in its own fragility and ephemerality. It’s expiring in front of you in real time.” But Hollywood was already calling: In 2018, she directed an episode of the Duplass brothers’ Room 104 for HBO, and early...

For Jennifer Lawrence, preparing to play a wounded veteran in Causeway took time and intense preparation. Part of that preparation included meeting with real veterans to form her character.
“It was immensely helpful to meet incredible heroes who are in similar circumstances,” the Oscar-winning actress said during Saturday’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event. “And we had help with physical therapists who were in the movie and helped me on how to move. It was extremely informative, and most of all, we wanted to represent [soldiers] correctly.”
Causeway follows the story of a U.S. soldier who suffers a traumatic brain injury while fighting in Afghanistan and struggles to adjust to life when she returns home to New Orleans.

When it premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, “Causeway” attracted plenty of attention for helping to relaunch Jennifer Lawrence’s acting career. By the actress’ own admission, she had begun to feel trapped by the big franchise roles that made her a superstar at such a young age. She sought a second act defined by smaller, more character-driven films like “Causeway,” which she also developed through her production company, Excellent Cadaver.
But any effect that “Causeway” had on Lawrence’s career arc is only a small part of the film’s impact. Telling the story of an Army Corps engineer who suffers a brain injury while serving in Afghanistan, the film has been praised by critics as one of the best films about traumatized veterans adapting to civilian life in recent memory.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Excellent Cadaver producing partner Justine Ciarrocchi said the Oscar-winning actress was “itching to do something small and intimate” after years of doing bigger studio movies when she signed on to make Lila Neugebauer’s Causeway.
“We were submitted the original draft of the [Causeway] script towards the end of Jen’s (three- year) acting hiatus,” said Ciarrocchi, who appeared via Zoom for a panel at Deadline’s The Contenders Film: New York award-season event. “So much of what we were reading at the time was super traditionally structured and predictable, and sort of checking all the right boxes. We were reading scripts that just didn’t feel particularly inspiring or relatable, but when we got this piece, it was the opposite of all of that. [Causeway] was a true character piece. We could feel the mood on the page. So, we reacted right away.”

Jennifer Lawrence says she has departed Adam McKay’s Bad Blood, the writer-director’s take on Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes’ fraud controversy.
The New York Times‘ Kyle Buchanan was first to report the departure, tweeting what Lawrence had told him about the decision following the publication of his profile on the Causeway star. The Times awards season columnist said the decision followed Lawrence seeing Amanda Seyfried play Holmes in the Hulu limited series The Dropout.
“I thought she was terrific,” Lawrence, who was also a producer on the film, told Buchanan. “I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t need to redo that.’ She did it.”
Picked up by Apple in December 2021, Bad Blood had Lawrence attached to pull double-duty as lead actress and producer, with McKay writing and directing. It was a reteaming for the duo following their work on the Oscar-nominated Don’t Look Up.

A24 and Apple Original Films have released the first trailer for “Causeway,” their new drama starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence.
Lawrence stars as Lynsey, a military engineer who returns to the United States from Afghanistan after suffering a debilitating brain injury after an Ied explosion.
After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, Lawrence, who also serves as one of the film’s producers, garnered rave reviews for her performance. The film hopes to find a pathway into a crowded lead actress field.
Breaking through as an Academy favorite, Lawrence won best actress for her turn as a young widow in David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012). She’s also amassed three other acting noms for Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone” (2010), “American Hustle” (2013) and “Joy” (2015), also both from Russell.

In addition to her mega-successful career as an Oscar-winning actor and producer, Jennifer Lawrence is also famous as a “Housewives” franchise superfan. The actor has proclaimed her love for the Bravo series several times and has appeared on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.”

Jennifer Lawrence brought serious starpower to the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, appearing at the world premiere of her new film “Causeway.”
But despite the big, Hollywood name “Causeway” was a quieter character study.
Lawrence stars in and produces the film, in which she plays a soldier returning to civilian life in New Orleans. The film also stars Brian Tyree Henry, Linda Emond, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Russell Harvard. “Causeway” is the feature directorial debut of theater veteran Lila Neugebauer, with a script written by Elizabeth Sanders, Luke Goebel and Ottessa Moshfegh.
Her character in the film, Lynsey, is desperate to redeploy. When asked what drove her towards the decision, Lawrence said she found a common ground. “I felt something in my gut when I read this,” she said. “That kind of immediate, ‘We have to make this.’ I identify with that feeling of trying to find your home.

Jennifer Lawrence, who won the Best Actress Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook in 2012 and followed that with a number of hig- profile movies like The Hunger Games series, American Hustle, Passengers, and mother!, hasn’t been seen on screen in a pure leading role since 2018’s Red Sparrow. Last year, she returned as part of the all-star ensemble in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, and now she is finally back in a starring turn in the affecting but comparatively small drama Causeway, which had its world premiere today at the Toronto Film Festival.

Theater director Lila Neugebauer, who helmed episodes The Maid and The Sex Lives of College Girls, jumps to features with Causeway, which centers on a soldier (Lawrence) who struggles to adjust to her life after returning home to New Orleans. The project shot in New Orleans and hails from scribes Ottessa Moshfegh, Luke Goebel and Elizabeth Sanders. Lawrence produces with Justine Ciarrocchi for Excellent Cadaver. Neugebauer serves as executive producer.
The feature previously went by the title Red, White and Water and at one time counted disgraced producer Scott Rudin as among its backers. Rudin stepped away from the project more than a year ago in the aftermath of a Hollywood Reporter investigation into alleged abuses by him.

One of the trickier aspects of impersonating fallen Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is her deep-throated voice, but Jennifer Lawrence is set to take it on for the likely next film from her “Don’t Look Up” director Adam McKay, “Bad Blood.”
The film is based on John Carreyrou’s 2018 nonfiction book “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley,” about the rise and fall of the multibillion-dollar Silicon Valley startup that set out to revolutionize blood tests but unraveled as Holmes was eventually convicted of four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy (out of 11 federal charges). Lawrence will be the first actress to portray Holmes on the big screen, though her story has been memorably brought to life in the podcast “The Dropout” and Alex Gibney’s documentary “The Inventor.”
McKay recently told Insider that Lawrence has already begun work on nailing that particularly unique accent of Holmes’.

Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most beloved actresses worldwide with box office hits (“The Hunger Games” franchise) and an Academy Award for Best Actress (“Silver Linings Playbook”) under her belt, but she’s not without a few misfires. After scoring her fourth Oscar nomination with “Joy,” the actress went on to star in a string of box office disappointments: Morten Tyldum’s “Passengers,” Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!,” Francis Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow,” and the maligned “X-Men” bomb “Dark Phoenix.” It was after these four misses that Lawrence took an acting break, only now emerging with a new A-list project in the form of Adam McKay’s Netflix comedy “Don’t Look Up.”
“I was not pumping out the quality that I should have,” Lawrence told Vanity Fair about the movies that led to her stepping away from the spotlight. “I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me.
