Back then, no one was expecting The Descent to go on and become one of the most widely acclaimed horror films of the decade. Even today, Neil Marshall’s second creature-feature (the first being Dog Soldiers) remains a favorite among audiences and critics everywhere. This iconic film defies those expectations based on its cast and pitch — not a man in sight as six women battle a clan of cave-dwelling monsters — and then delivers a thoughtful study of friendships, grief, and survival.
So when a sequel was announced, fans’ curiosity and anticipation turned into nervousness once it was revealed that Marshall was neither directing nor writing the follow-up. Instead, the first film’s editor, Jon Harris, was promoted to director, and the script was handled by James McCarthy, J Blakeson, and James Watkins. Chicago – Why does every successful horror film need a sequel? If they’re big enough, they usually come out theatrically, but there’s a whole sub-genre of straight-to-video follow-ups to horror hits, the latest being the truly bad “The Descent: Part 2,” a film that merely serves to enhance the reputation of the original by comparison.
DVD Rating: 1.0/5.0
The best thing about “The Descent: Part 2” is the set-up. It’s all downhill from there. Haven’t you ever wondered about the aftermath of a horror movie? The camera usually fades to black when the villain is killed or the hero is safe, but there’s clearly going to be a lot of questions and clean-up. What happens next is a common genre question and “The Descent: Part 2” cleverly picks up immediately after the end of Neil Marshall’s beloved film.

[Editor's note: Possible Descent spoilers. If you haven't seen the first film yet, why are you reading this anyway? Go watch it... or continue at own risk.]
How inevitable you thought a Descent sequel would be all depends on which version of Neil Marshall's original film you watched. Personally, I never would have imaged it. I saw the UK version and the way I remember it ending is with a nasty twist. You think Sarah has escaped the subterranean nightmare only to discover her escape was all in her head. She's actually lost her mind and is ready to die and be with her daughter in the afterlife. In America, this ending was truncated so that twist was edited out. It's from this version that the Descent: Part 2 springs.
The film starts with Sarah alive and running for her life in the forest. She gets picked up by a backwoods trucker who takes her to the hospital.

2005's The Descent was an unexpected delight for horror fans. It sort of came out of nowhere -- written and directed by then-unknown Neil Marshall (who had previously impressed us with Dog Soldiers), it was a grim, gory, innovative movie that quite frankly scared the hell out of me. That's something that's pretty uncommon these days -- a horror movie that's actually scary. Marshall's story of six cave explorers who become trapped in a labyrinthine underground nightmare filled with creepy humanoid predators was a tribute to minimalist film-making. He used only the light generated by actual flashlights and flares, made good use of sound effects, and sparse music -- successfully making the viewer feel like they were in the cave with the characters. It was, in a word, brilliant -- so much so that we named it the best horror movie of the aughts.
So to say that a sequel...

And another interesting sounding project from the UK landed in our inbox today, this one entitled The Disappearance of Alice Creed. It's the first feature from writer/director J Blakeson, and there are only three characters in the entire film.
As a bit of background on Blakeson, since 2001 he has worked predominantly as a screenwriter, sometimes in collaboration with James McCarthy. He has written feature scripts across many genres for a number of companies including Mission Pictures, Working Title, and Shine Pictures. Most recently he and McCarthy wrote The Descent: Part 2 for Celador Films.
With regard to The Disappearance of Alice Creed, here's the synopsis:
Two men - one in his twenties, the other nearer forty, both intensely focused on the task at hand - line the inside of a transit van with plastic. Shopping, they buy a drill, a mattress, and other supplies. In a small flat they...

Lionsgate will be releasing The Descent: Part 2 on DVD April 27th. This sequel picks up where the first one left off, with character Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) returning to a gruesome scene. Here several off her friends were ingested by the "feral crawlers," but there is a possibility of survivors (Movie). Visit two movie clips for The Descent: Part 2 and order yourself a copy if you liked the first one (reviews are mixed). All the details are below.
The synopsis for The Descent: Part 2 here:
"The chilling sequel to the popular splatterfest picks up right where the original left off, as Sarah emerges from the fateful cave bloodied and traumatized. However, after being treated in the hospital, Sarah can't offer a satisfactory account of what happened to her friends. So, she's then forced by authorities back underground with a rescue team only to again encounter the feral crawlers...

British fans of Neil Marshall’s subterranean gore flick, cum menstrual metaphor, The Descent, will have good reason to scratch their heads as “Part 2” begins. You’ll recall that Sarah, the family-deficient protagonist and heroine of the first film, lost her mates and her mind to an unpleasant band of sub-human, cave creatures; pallid nocturnes with poor drool control.
At the close of the film, having imagined her escape and made it to the group vehicle, the spectral regurgitation of her recently deceased pal, Juno, broke the reverie and our unfortunate Scotslady woke up back in purgatory with the wail of the beasts in the near background. Right?
Wrong.
That ending, although the only one British cinemagoers would have seen unless they bought the DVD, was deemed a little, er, downbeat for our American friends. In the Us, shorn of the final twist, Sarah does indeed make it out and...

In 2005 Neil Marshall’s imagine-if-Alien-were-set-in-a-cave feature The Descent scared the living daylights out of cinemagoers worldwide. Lacking the bawdy humour of his werewolf masterpiece Dog Soldiers, it was nevertheless an honest to goodness horror film that pulled no punches and left no survivors. Unless you watched the American cut.
The folk who decided to make The Descent: Part 2 clearly fall into the latter camp as they have picked up just before we left off with Sarah being kind of…alive. For those among you who have never seen The Descent there is a brief recap after the jump:
Six girls go caving
Things go bump in the dark
Some of the girls die
Some of the girls kill some of the creatures
All of the girls die
The action picks up two days after the events of the first film (with Descent editor Jon Harris at the helm), the...

To be shown in theatres in 2010 The Descent 2 stars Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, and Krysten Cummings as a group of cave explorers who return to a mysterious cave system. A synopsis for The Descent 2 here:
"Dazed, bloddied and speechless with trauma, Sarah Carter emerges alone from the Appalachian cave system where the events of The Descent took place. Local Sheriff Redmond Vaines forces her back underground to help the rescue team which is desperately searching for her five missing girlfriends.
As the team moves deeper into the caves, Sarah's flashes of fractured memory intensify and she begins to realise the full horror of the would-be rescue mission.

How do you follow a film as simply effective as The Descent? By not changing much at all, according to Jon Harris, the director assigned the tough, expectation-laden job of making The Descent part 2. But in sticking to the winning formula and upping the horror to tongue-in-cheek levels, he's done about as good a job as possible.
A messy but thankfully brief set-up introduces us to a rescue party ready to enter the caves where the girls from the first movie went missing. Miles away Sarah, the only survivor of the original expedition, emerges from the cave system in a state of amnesia, but is well enough to lead a small expedition party back into the cave complex. The believability of this is stretched further by a couple...

Here at FilmShaft we love our trailers, hell we even have an entire section dedicated to them – little slices of cinematic thrills that should (hopefully) allude to the greatness of the whole. So naturally when we were sent the trailer for The Descent: Part 2 how could we resist?
The original you’ll remember, had people going crazy. An original plot in the horror genre is not something we see very often (more on that in a later article) so when audiences were plunged into the damp, claustrophobic caves of 2005’s The Descent, their fear was almost tangible.
Now with filmmakers are set to drag us back into the subterranean horror with The Descent: Part 2 the question is – are there any more surprises left?

Warner Bros. Pictures UK just sent over the latest trailer for Path Productions' sequel to Neil Marshall's 2005 film, The Descent (which we last reported on here).
Shauna Macdonald (Mutant Chronicles) returns as Sarah, continuing the story of the original film, in which a group of young women disappear during a caving trip in the Appalachian Mountains.
Check out the trailer below!
Emerging from the cave system alone, distraught and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Sceptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah's psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines (Gavan O'Herlihy) doesn't waste time. Along with his partner Rios (Krysten Cummings), and their cave rescue team Dan (Douglas Hodge), Greg (Joshua Dallas), and Cath (Anna Skellern), Vaines forces Sarah back into the caves to help the rescuers find her friends.

"The Descent: Part 2", a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2005 horror film "The Descent", has got its international teaser trailer debuted via IGN. Though the sneak peek doesn't help much in exposing its plot, it does reel out the horror faced by Sarah Carter and the search party when they discover they are not alone in the pitch black cave.
Picking up where the first movie left off, this sequel is to begin with Sarah Carter emerging alone from the cave system where she and her five friends experience caving expedition gone wrong. Unable to explain to authorities what happened or why she's covered in blood, the distraught, confused, and half-wild with fear girl is forced back to the subterranean depths to help locate her missing friends.

It took a while but Pathe has finally released the official trailer for Jon Harris' The Descent: Part 2, sequel to Neil Marshall's acclaimed subterranean horror film. Yes we're a little skeptical but with three hot new writers on the project, James Watkins (Eden Lake), J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) and newcomer James McCarthy we have high hopes.
