Scream of the Banshee is the second of two After Dark ‘Originals' released this summer, the other being the previously reviewed The Task. The difference with this film is that it is quite clearly co-produced by SyFy, which is not necessarily a bad thing - since they know how to make programmes and straight-to-television films look decent.
Going into this film having enjoyed The Task - despite its many, many flaws - I was hoping to get either something similar or, God forbid, a good, well-scripted and produced low-budget horror. What I got, unfortunately, was something similar. It is obviously a television movie (you can tell because the score ends at the same time as the scene...ready for an ad break) which doesn’t automatically make it crap – see Tommy Lee Wallace's novel-adaptation, It – but throw in the SyFy moniker and the bar suddenly lowers.

Scream Of The Banshee
Stars: Lauren Holly, Lance Henriksen, Monica Acosta, Eric F. Adams, Marcelle Baer | Written by Anthony C. Ferrante | Directed by Steven C. Miller
The banshee, a mythical creature that foretells a death in the night by her eerie wails floating out of the darkness. I know what you are thinking; it’s a good character for a Syfy style monster movie right? Well you would be correct. To be fair though, this does not always mean that it’s a bad thing.
When a strange box is found behind a wall in a university; and a strange gauntlet mysteriously arrives at just the right time turns out to be the key to opening the box you know the signs are always bad. Not caring about these signs of doom the box is opened by an archaeology professor and her assistants and they find a strange decomposing head inside.

A group of college kids and their professor accidentally unleash an ancient monster that places a death curse on whoever hears it scream.
Scream of the Banshee provides an adequate amount of thrills, chills and suspense. It's competently directed. It's competently acted by everyone involved. It's got a competent array of special effects and makeup. It also happens to look slick and polished. It's a solid horror film in every respect. So what's there to complain about? Well, it never pushes the envelope far enough. It doesn't break out of the box so to speak. It has an interesting concept at its disposal. There was so much mythology or ideology that the film could have explored, but it goes in the more routine direction of teen slasher, but...

When it comes to original movies, it’s kind of hard to beat the Syfy channel. After all, this is the network that’s given the world Dinocroc vs. Supergator, Ice Spiders, and Mansquito. For its 200th (!) original film, Syfy unveiled Scream of the Banshee last night.
Lauren Holly (NCIS) stars as archeologist professor Isla Whelan, who apparently is in charge of some sort of massive organizational project down in her school’s very dark and creepy-looking basement. She’s got a couple of plucky assistants to help her, Otto (Todd Haberkorn) and Janine (Leanne Cochran), and one very disaffected why-can’t-i-ever-please-you-mom teenager,...

Finally!! After Dark Films has finally unleashed a trailer that showcases all 8 of their horror films in the After Dark Originals lineup.
After Dark Films made an unprecedented commitment to the production of eight original horror films this year under the After Dark Originals label, continuing the Company’s mantra of supporting first time independent film writers and directors. The creation of the Ad Originals(http://www.afterdarkoriginals.com/) slate is just another example of the Company’s commitment to the Indie film industry.
Unlike After Dark’s “8 Films To Die For®”, After Dark Originals are wholly financed and produced by After Dark Films. The Ado slate runs the gamut of the genre, from paranormal phenomena, black magic, and vengeful ghosts to psychological trauma, murderous psychopaths, vampires and the undead. After Dark polled its fans and is delivering the kinds of movies they asked for!

The new horror flick Scream of the Banshee has just been announced - will it give us an awesome female villain?
After Dark movies have not been known to be .. er... 'good'. But sometimes they're not bad. They've just announced a new film in their 2011 Originals lineup (meaning, they paid for it to be made instead of just buying it from the filmmaker already completed) movie Scream of the Banshee, and it has a solid team of semi-okay guys behind it like writer Anthony Ferrante (Boo) and Steven C. Miller (director of the profoundly overrated zombie movie Automaton Transfusion).
There's no trailer, no poster, and no images from the film out yet, but After Dark wanted to get the word out anyway. For some reason. You know, to cause 'buzz'. Or whatever. I probably would have waited till I at least had a poster, if I were them.
